Oh please,  Helen Keller could see this:And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him

"Now the distressing spirit from the Lord came upon Saul as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand. And David was playing music with his hand. Then Saul sought to pin David to the wall with the spear, but he slipped away from Saul

My response is directly related with what I quoted, there was cause and effect related with David playing the harp and Saul being refreshed, glad and joyful and the evil spirit from God departing him. Minimising that by saying we don't know if he sang, or if there were words, or if he did a flying scissor kick is the same way the x'ers derive some of their scripture knowledge. The Bible mentions singing in other places, so I am sure God knows if it happened with David or of it was relevant enough to include in this instance.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a bus or a car or a musical instrument (Romans 14:14). What is the purpose and who is using it will determine quite a bit. For example a school bus will be driven by an unsaved man for the purpose of bringing the riders to school to learn in a place where God is not welcome. That same bus after it has performed it's service can then be purchased by a church so a saved man can bring folks to church to hear the gospel and/or worship God. The same truth can be applied to musical instruments. Who is using them and for what purpose are they using them. Ephesians 5:19 doesn't define genre but gives great insight to music.

Rocco Dapice is doing a series on Facebook about Biblical music truths, very interesting. https://www.facebook.com/roccodapice

I have known Rocco for over 20 years, he knows his stuff regarding music, biblically and secular.

Tell that to the fried former owners of Ford Pintos.  ;)

Does anyone know of a study of the rhythm and meter of the Psalms in comparison to modern music?

Eph 5:18-21  And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

Psalms - Quoting the Scripture
Hymns - Sung to God, very doctrinal, typically slower
Spiritual Songs - Sung as a testimony, more repetitive, typically more upbeat

Types of Songs in the Psalms:
1. Didactic: Formal instruction; Principles of doctrine and ethics; Sometimes called Psalms of precept
2. History:  Refer to historical events of the nation of Israel; Reflect with a theocratic patriotism
3. Praise and Thanksgiving:  The theme of praise is obvious
4. Penitence: Confessing of sin; Asking forgiveness is associated with praise and should produce praise
5. Supplication: A cry to God for a need for self or another; Requests deliverance; Gives us instruction for what to do in these times
6. Messianic:  Prophecy of the coming Messiah, His humiliation and glorification; Christ is pictured or depicted
7. Nature:  Praises God through a reference to nature
8. Prayer:  The Soul in communion with God
9. Profession of Faith:  Generally about God to other men; Professes to others the gracious and mighty works of God on behalf of the believer
10. Pastoral:  God

Show me a preacher that preaches against CCM,Christian ROCK, RAP  nine time out of ten They allow Christian COUNTRY AKA southern gospel in their church.,,

And these definitions are found where in Scripture?

Science tells us that specific styles of music have a negative effect on the human psyche and body.

Also that NASA computers discovered Joshua's missing day, and Russian scientists drilled into hell and heard screaming.

Fundy "science" is awesome!

Categories of the Psalms was intended to show the basic subject matter of songs.  Also, there is a wide variance and we should not expect all of the widely varied themes to have the exact same sound.  Anyone even familiar with music understands this.

Regarding tropisms - do a little more research than Mythbusters.  Pick up a book on Biology, or even try it yourself.  This study is very easy to perform yourself.  Actually read what modern medicine says about music.  Hospitals don't hire KISS for restorative health, but they do harpists and pianists.  Yeah, the voices from hell one is pretty goofy and I hadn't heard about Joshua's missing day.

Ephesians 5 was provided.  Definitions are my summary taken from where the words are found in Scripture and their typical usage in music history.

I don't prefer Christian Country either (read previous posts).  Though tamed down versions are quite popular in IFB churches, just as tamed down CCM is becoming popular in many of the same churches.

Yes, there are many ways to worship God, but music plays an integral part.

I have agreed that there is some subjectivity to the style of music used for worship, but maintain that there must be some line of separation.

It seems as though some here simply want their own hearts to be the determining factor of right and wrong.  Even though "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"  It seems as some would prefer to have every man do that which is right in his own eyes.

Maybe the issue of contention here is not really music genre, so much as it is a desire, or lack thereof, for separation.  While I am challenging and requesting research as to what the higher standard desired of God may be, the response by some seems to simply be a rejection of any standard at all.

The traditional IFB definition of music is right up there with their belief that women should not wear pants.  If they truly believed that the hymns and psalms are all that should be used, they are hypocrites.  Where is the line drawn that makes Amazing Grace okay and Mighty to Save not?  If they truly believed what they say, they would never leave the Psalms since at one time that is where this "line" was drawn.

If the people who you learned your rhythm pattern from were naked, eating each other, and controlled by spirits....you may have a problem.

And you can find the same themes covered in songs that are not from Ye Olde Baptist Hymnal.

Biology books don't discuss the issue. And every study outside of Fundy has proven there is no basis in fact for what you have claimed. In fact, it's right up there with the voices from hell when it comes to proof.

Where are the words defined in Scripture? Where are they defined as described in music literature?
I have agreed that there is some subjectivity to the style of music used for worship, but maintain that there must be some line of separation.
People have stated what the line should be repeatedly. And it didn't have anything to do with genre or cultural preference.

What does it say about God giving man a new heart?

Yes, we should separate ourselves from the world. Let's define the difference (again):

World: Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. (Galatians 5:19-21a ESV)

Not world: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)

So, you maintain that if the subject matter is in keeping with the fruits of the Spirit, it is acceptable and this is the only guide?

Is this the same "jungle-beat" argument from the Jim Crow 1950's?  :o

My statement stands alone.
