Sack (or bag) lunch

Because bus workers were on their routes all day on Saturday and all day on Sunday they were allowed to pick up a "sack lunch".  The items I remember being in the bag were Vintners chips, a PB&J sandwich (with about a 1/4 inch of butter on the bread), carrot or ce
lery sticks (or maybe a pickle), a desert cake with about a 1/2" of cinnamon on top.  It seems like we also picked up a can of pop.  Because the bus routes were visited on foot, we normally ate the sack lunch on the drive to Chicago.

Bag...did somebody mention Sheri?

Did you mean that stinkin' bag Teri?

Not to be confused with "box lunch", which was the Pastor's School version, that included a Saran-wrapped submarine sandwich, and a pickle spear with the fighting end bitten off.

The PS box lunch was a feast compared to the sack lunch.

[/quote/]

In reality the PS box lunches were used for the next year as sack lunches. End of March and some of April was OK; after that the quality really took a nose dive!

Sack (or bag) lunch

The only form of weekend nutrition for poor college students who couldn't afford to go to Shakey's ..... or McDonald's.......or White Castle.......or a gyro cart......

It was also the first and only four years of my life in which I was a consumer of Pop Tarts.

The Litmus Test to see just how hungry or starving your bus kids really were.

"um, do you have anything else?" -Bus Kid refusing the sack lunch

Classic!

The vintage Hacker would work a full time job and work the bus ministry from 8:00 Saturday morning until 2:00 Monday morning.  He would give his sack lunch to a bus kid.  He would pay for a bus kid to attend City Baptist.  Meanwhile, the Hacker would sleep through classes, fail classes, and become financially withdrawn.

Grandma Hyles
Your baby sitter when Mom's in the choir, and Dad's workin.
You sit on the second row, of the center section to Bro.Hyles' left of the center aisle.
The guy up there.talkin calls her "momma".
She's a kind old woman, but not a pushover.
Always has a piece of candy, for a "good boy" (she was a liar, cuz I got one every time).
She made that man up there a human, and I thank God for that, because it was going to keep me out of trouble, later.

Grandma Hyles

She seemed to have Godliness written all over her.  She was kind, humble, and gracious.  She always had time to talk to anyone who approached her.  You could tell that she was her son's hero.  I always loved it when Dr. Hyles would tease her.

Bus Ministry

Please be warned! Being a part of this ministry does not necessarily mean you are right with God. if you leave for your bus route after 5:45am on Sunday and return before 1:00am you are not necessarily a part of the real bus ministry.

On a serious note, I can remember few times in my Christian life when my relationship with Christ suffered as much as when I was a bus captain. I only ever attended church on Sunday Nights (and slept through it). I didn't have time for personal prayer and Bible study. I went through the outward motions...The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge that it was temporary!
