Bus Ministry

Where you learned ministry means to give your heart away.

...and your sack lunch.

That's the line I heard and believed until experience taught me otherwise. I was a bus captain for 2 years, and I have been a pastor for 3 years (5 years a youth pastor before that). Pastoring and Bus ministry are light-years apart from each other.

I agree.  I know what he meant as far as caring for and loving a group of people, but in the big picture it is night and day.

I have to smile when I remember my first summer "job" at a church.  The pastor was a HAC graduate whose church was about an hour from my home.  He asked me if I would consider helping him on Saturdays and Sundays.  He would put me up and feed me.  I thought it would be great experience.

On Saturday we started about 9:00 and bus called for about 2 hours.  After lunch we did church visits for part of the afternoon.  By 4:00 we were done for the day.  There may have been a youth activity or two in the evening.

On Sunday I went to the church at 8:30.  We picked up kids for Sunday School which started at 9:30.  After church we took the kids home and I was eating lunch at the pastor's house at 1:00.  I was wondering what great spiritual thing we would do on Sunday afternoon.  After lunch the pastor said to me, "I know at HAC you are use to going non-stop on Sunday afternoon.  Around here we take a nap.  The couch is yours."  It was a classic moment.  :)

Bus Ministry
A 2 years qualifying factor for graduation from HAC.

It was only one year when I was there.

Bus Ministry

Please be warned! Being a part of this ministry does not necessarily mean you are right with God. if you leave for your bus route after 5:45am on Sunday and return before 1:00am you are not necessarily a part of the real bus ministry.

Raider... awesome thread. I believe it is worthy of being set as "sticky" in the Hyles forum. Agreed?

Sack (or bag) lunch

Because bus workers were on their routes all day on Saturday and all day on Sunday they were allowed to pick up a "sack lunch".  The items I remember being in the bag were Vintners chips, a PB&J sandwich (with about a 1/4 inch of butter on the bread), carrot or celery sticks (or maybe a pickle), a desert cake with about a 1/2" of cinnamon on top.  It seems like we also picked up a can of pop.  Because the bus routes were visited on foot, we normally ate the sack lunch on the drive to Chicago.
