So, what did you/do you believe?

I had a copy of that police report. It happened. I really would prefer that we not go to deep on this one as the woman involved and her husband have reconciled and I don't see the point. Dave Hyles has no credibility with anyone on here and even the most ardent JH supporter here believes JH turned a deaf ear to Dave's affairs.
I found out, when it was written on the train bridge, on route 30 west bound side, that I drove under on the way home from school every day.  And it was 1987.

Anishinabe

1987 is too soon for the DH and "HBJHS secretary" rendevous where the police report was made.  I do remember the train bridge--I forget what she that time to deserve that bit of graffiti!!  The police report would've been '89, '90 or '91--Smellin would know for sure.

What was going on, purportedly, between Sumner and Hyles that Sumner wrote what he did? I'm sure Hyles gave a reason for why Sumner did it.

When Dr. Rice passed a away Sumner wanted to be the head man at the SOTL.  Dr. Hyles was one of the board members.  He voted for Curtis Hudson.  Sumner was not a happy camper.

I have had the same thoughts.  I'm sure it happens many times, but it is one of those things that make you say, "What?"

You are very perceptive. That is exactly why we kept quiet. We did not want to hurt Bro. Hyles ministry.

I realize people can become twisted in their thinking.  I was not referring to the average blindly loyal follower.  We are talking about a man who supposedly knew his wife was doing who knows what with another guy.  He continues to promote and serve with the guy for multiple years.  And we are suppose to believe he let it all go on so that he would not hurt Dr. Hyles' ministry?

Raider, in the church my husband and I left, one of the prominent ($$ givers) men in our church discovered that his wife was "involved" with a single man in the church.  The woman is the church pianist and teaches in the Christian School.  The woman decided she wanted a divorce in order to be with the younger man.  Our pastor thought the sun and moon hung on the woman pianist, and somehow, even after being told by staff members that she was involved with the guy, our pastor twisted the whole thing in his mind to say that it was the HUSBAND who was the bad one and wanted the divorce.

Now, the husband still wanted to attend church at the church.  He didn't feel it was fair to have to leave his wife AND his church.  Understand, this is the church where you didn't leave and remain in God's will.  It was frequently taught that if you left that church, God would kill your children in retaliation - yes, stated from the pulpit with an example of a dead child of folks who were no longer attending the church.  So, yeah, the husband didn't want to leave the church and have nowhere else to go.

Now we get to the good part.  The pastor told the husband that he could stay and go to the church - even after the wife divorced him - IF HE PROMISED TO SIT BY HIS EX-WIFE IN CHURCH SO THAT THE CHURCH MEMBERS WOULDN'T KNOW THEY'D GOTTEN DIVORCED.  AND HE DID IT!!!!  He sat by her in church EVEN AFTER the divorce in order to make sure it didn't cause souls to not be saved.  About a year later, his job moved him.  When that happened, the church was told that HE had divorced HER/left her, and guess where she is?  Still playing the piano for church and teaching in the Christian School.

How messed up is all that?  I am still friends with them both, but man, that was one screwed up situation. lol

But, you bypassed the "most important" question. Did the lady wear pants? If she did, would she still be playing piano and teaching in the Christian School? Priorities you know.

That'll leave a mark!!

Take notice everyone. Raider and I agreed on something.  :) Next he'll be calling me Bro. Norefund.

The last year I was at HAC was '84.  A couple of years later (my timing may be a bit off) I was contacted by a student still attending HAC.  The news about Dave Hyles' Texas' problems had broke.  Also, close to this time Dr. Hyles' mom had passed away.

I can remember this student telling me of Dr. Hyles' broken heart.  He said that Dr. Hyles wept during most sermons that he preached.  This student was very worried about Dr. Hyles physical and mental health.

It was during this time period that Dr. Hyles asked God to show him that He loved him.  Many of us older folks :) can remember Dr. Hyles hacking and coughing while he preached.  It was always an embarrassment to him.  He had some kind of a physical problem that caused this.  After he prayed this prayer he was healed of his hacking and coughing.

Does anyone remember this?

Say it ain't so.

I thought be a HACker was incurable!

One may cover up some of the symptoms, but the root cause was beyond fixing.

You can take the student out of HAC,
but you can't take the HACker out of the student.

During the last 10 years or so of his life here on earth he began to reevaluate everything he believed.
It was a subtle thing. He even got to the point where he talked himself into believing his dad was a saved man.
The list of changed beliefs is something someone should compile.
He did think God healed his cough. I think it had more to do with his excessive weight gain. This was the period of time when he made suspenders famous and talked of buffeting his body. When he started to loose weight after his heart attack in Mexico he started to cough somewhat more.

In 1990 or 1991, DH was found on a darkened Schererville street with a female secretary from HBJHS.  A police report was made unbeknownst to the principals who voted to let the secretary keep her job.
A few BRAVE deacons brought up the issue in a deacons meeting;  it became very public and still nothing changed. Had HB students been found in the car, they'd been expelled.  But this secretary kept her job.

A copy of the police report was anonymously mailed to some of the deacons to ensure that they knew that it was legit.  Vogel swears that he was told that there was no police report made;  by whom, I don't know.

So lying and cover up continued in protecting DH even when he came back to Hammond by JH.  Many good families left the church over this event.

There was a police report because I was the one who discovered it a couple hours after it happened. I was a dispatcher working midnight shift at the Schererville Police Department and the officer had caught them in a parked car (I think it was on Kennedy Avenue) and it appeared to the officer that they were "making out". There was no sex going on at that time. I spoke with the officer the next day about it and he told me that he basically saw them making out and told them to move along.

How it got leaked, I'm not sure but a couple of thing. First, the parents of the officer who found them left FBCH (before he was born) when Hyles came in and split the church. Two. Another officer who was working the same night I found the Incident Sheet (simply like it says: incident sheet and not a true police "report") and he was an HB grad and his dad was a deacon at the church. He and I talked about it that night. Three. Two days later, the Incident Sheet (whch was numbered) disappeared from the book altogether. Though it wasn't a police "report" it was still a police "record" and its removal was illegal. I was questioned by my superiors as to what I knew about it missing but I had no idea so it was never pursued.

Then Hyles began his lies about me. He had said that I was his enemy and had falsified the report to make him look bad. I left the police department about 6 weeks later for unrelated reasons but he skewed it by claiming that I was fired for my actions concerning the report. Got some nasty flak about it for a couple months and lost a few "friends" but I knew the truth and there were those who actually asked my side of the story, which was nice.

Smellin - I was a teenager during that time and remember it oh so well and so do a lot of parents.  And, I know who the girl was.  There was some speculations afterwards ...  They're no longer at our church.  They left a few years ago to minister at another church in the area.

Please don't anyone release any of the names.
It is bad enough to know all of them after all these years.

'Tis way in the past and I'm sure it wouldn't be appreciated by family members so no worries about me. :)

Thank-you

My kids, who are all in their late 30's and 40's still talk about all the people involved in this big mess.
It may be in the past but we still see many of them often at church and in the Calumet region.
One can not forget. After the JS debacle all of this has surfaced just like the Pen State problem.
It may have been buried but it is now resurrected.

I remember him saying that about his father.  Wasn't there more to that story - a reason why he thought there was a possibility?

I do not remember the reasons he believed that.
What I do remember is how shocked we were to hear him say that his dad was now saved. He had a sermon on soul-winning that used his unsaved dead dad calling out from Hell as his text. I hope someone remembers the details for as the more people remember the more it triggers additional memories.

Now that I think about it, Cindy may have said something about it in her biography of Dr. Hyles.  I'll have to take a look.

You mentioned that during the last 10 years of his life he began to "reevaluate EVERYTHING he believed".  I think that is a bit of a bold statement.  I remember him changing his belief on the KJV.  I believe that was earlier than his last 10 years.  What other changes can you name?
