Hacker Trivia!!

What was Jack Hyles reading when he received the call that his father had died?

On his second Sunday as pastor of First Baptist Church in 1959, a man came onto the platform to continue some high-brow, high-church tradition that First Baptist Church of Hammond was used to. What did young pastor Jack Hyles do to remove him from the platform?

Why did Bro. Hyles have prayer time in the format he did on the broadcast?

To give people time to call in requests during the broadcast.

This reminds me of a funny story.  Dennis Usher and I had Brother Laurent for Isaiah.  The broadcast was on during his class.  I had my head bowed for prayer time (actually I was half asleep).  Dennis Usher was sitting directly to my right.  Dr. Hyles said, "Pray for two of our college students, Dennis Usher and RAIDER (well, he used my real name) as they were in an auto accident."  I immediately looked up and toward Dennis.  I then looked toward the front of the room at Brother Laurent.  He had a scowl on his face and he was shaking his head.  Needless to say, we had to stay after class and try to get out of a mess.  One of our friends had made the call.

Yeah, my sophomore year at HB the broadcast came on during gym class. One day we were sitting in our bleachers listening over the loudspeakers when he went to prayer requests. "Pray for D.S. who is a teenager having brain surgery today." D.S. was sitting there amongst us when we realized one of the guys had sneaked off the bleachers into the gym lobby and called in the prayer request from the pay phone.

The coach came bolting out of the locker room screaming, "Who called it in? Who called it in?" Poor D.S. was just sitting there red-faced.

For some reason, I still remember two names that were on that list for years: Cruz Igartua and Leona Leva.

However, the one prayer request that he mentioned that still cracks me up is when he said, "Pray for a lady who lost her umbrella."

Cedar Point apartments border Burr St. Pine Island (now section 8) are further East.
Thanks.

In my NWI Tard fashion, I had forgotten that we called everything over there : "Pine Island", even though there are apts, townhouses, and single family residences, and, correct me if I'm wrong, I think that only the Apts are "PI".

There were townhomes like where the Laurents lived, but Cedar Point was a bit North of there on the other side of the street.  They were definitely apartments but generally called the place was where students returning to the college would stop so they could transition their occupancy to comply with the college rules  :P

Springvale was the name of the townhomes on the other side of Burr Street from Pine Island and that property boarded against the cemetery toward the back. I had a good lawn care business going in there to pay my way through HAC. During the summer, I mowed about 80 lawns in that subdivision alone. Al Gomez (Aldon Builders) built those townhomes.

Catcher in the Rye?  :)  I don't recall the answer to this one.

How many "sets" of dorms were there at Baptist City?

There were two buildings in front of the grade school that eventually became classrooms and offices. My dad's office was in one of those rooms but when Baptist City was built, they originally were dorm rooms.

There was one building in front of the high school shop.

If I recall, there were 4 or 5 along the Jordan River. Can't recall exactly how many.

One thing about the BC campus is that the little pond across where the Carpenters lived (called Dead Sea), bus captains would throw their leftover bus goldfish into. Man that pond was stocked!

I was glad those vending machines were there, when I was stuck in Schererville til late.

On more that one occasion I parked as far away from the dorm as I could and snuck/army crawled across the field to get to my dorm after curfew.

I remember the 2 buildings in front of the grade school as you entered BC.  The furthest one away was in front of the high school shop.  I believe it was called building "F".  I'm thinking there were 4 along the Jordan River.  Each one of them were named after a person.  They also had letter and number names.

I was driving on a country road today, passed a country church with this beside the building. Stopped & prayed for them....... I was a bus pastor in a country church right out of HAC where we ran a bunch of buses. Good memories & still keep in contact with some who were saved as a result.
