But drinking responsibly and in moderation has been a Christian tradition through the centuries from the beginning, and Calvin and Luther both loved their beer. It was not until the rise of the American temperance movement in the 1800's that it became fashionable for Christians to disapprove of beer... and that only in certain denominations.

Kind of amusing how much bad theology came out of the 1800s and how pervasive it is in American Christian (i.e. "evangelical") culture.

Indeed. I've become so fed up with that culture that I've decided to leave it... while reaffirming my commitment to Christ and Christianity. My new church is part of the Anglican Communion.

With beer, mainly it tastes good, if you get the good stuff. And it goes really well with certain foods. Same goes for wine.

In my experience, many Christians who drink alcohol seem to flaunt that fact and often assume that I somehow think less of them because I don't drink.

And they seem disappointed when they find I don't give a rats hiney whether they drink or not.....again, that's my experience here in the so called Bible belt.

Maybe more than any other substance, but the love of self, money, sex, and power has destroyed countless more lives and families than alcohol.  Love of sex and self kills about one million people per year (abortion) in this country.  Love of power killed way over 100 million people in this century alone, and that's not counting all the abortions in China due to the one child policy. 

Alcohol, even if it were the most evil substance on earth (it's not - it's a blessing in the right hands), doesn't even deserve to be listed along with these other things.

Another thing in scripture that is not forbidden but always comes with a warning label is excessive borrowing!

That's why I don't let preachers "borrow" my books.....cause preachers "borrow" like the Isrealites did when they "borrowed from the Egyptians:

Ex 11:2--->"Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man BORROW of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver and jewels of gold."

In fact, to say that "things" are evil directly contradicts Scripture and would be the the doctrine of "deceitful spirits and...demons".

He's right about the underlined part for sure. It's a blatant teaching throughout the Bible.

See...I'm not a big fan of deriving theological ideas or political positions on "opinion". And, I'm definitely not going to keep hammering someone who disagrees with me if what I have to support my position is "opinion" without the facts to back said opinion up. In a battle of opinions, he with the most supporting facts (aggregate of quantity + quality) generally wins.

2 years ago my wife and I were at a Halloween party in a local Episcopalian church that included beer and wine.

I once attended a funeral conducted by an Episcopal Priest who insisted the deceased was in heaven because his good deeds far exceeded his sinful experiments....

Many Roman Catholic priest leave Rome to join the Episcopalian church cause they believe pretty much the same thing because they can be married there
