Why were we so "enamored" with Dr. Hyles?

Also, bay area band Alias asked Alvin to be their lead singer but he turned them down to stay in the ministry.

That's ironic. I turned down a job with Bachman Turner Overdrive because I was too busy "Takin' Care of Business!"

I remember hearing Hyles rant and rave against the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Prince, Madonna, and even REO Speedwagon. Hyles would have gone easier on kids who listened to "Pop" music instead of CCM/Christian Rock. Anyone you guys attending HAC/FBCH get reamed for listening to pop music or CCM/Christian Rock?

Hyles has plenty of defenders on here

To this day Jack Trieber still mentions "The Pope" in his sermons.

Dude- we went to Hyles Anderson and grew up in FBC. We no the pros and cons of that place. Nobody on here is defending Dr.Hyles. They are rolling their eyes at your lack of knowledge about that place and your soap box of CCM. What's it matter if Hyles was for it or against it.

You are so STINKIN' clueless!  Bro. Hyles preached against alot of things, but I challenge you to find his recorded voice mention REO Speedwagon - he didn't know who the groups were.  He preached just as hard or harder against "Sandi Fatty" as he did the Beatles.  Yes, we got "reamed out" for listening to Steve Green.

You are a troll.

Hey Moron, Yeah I'm talking to you.  I have read quite enough of your babblings.  You haven't a clue and everyone knows it.  I don't know what your MO is here and I might just be feeding a troll but enough already.

I grew up at FBC and no I don't think Bro. Hyles hung the moon but I do know a few things about all those years and while he may have not have been the greatest bible teacher who ever lived and had faults among other things I believe the word REAMED while being filth flowing from your fingertips whether you realize it or not is not what I believed Bro. Hyles did when he warned people of sin.

I heard Bro. Hyles preach against many Rock n Roll musicians and the entire lifestyle that they lived.  Do you not believe their lifestyle to be in direct conflict to God's laws or are you that ignorant?  I have been around for a while and rubbed shoulders with CCM also.  Their lifestyles from even some of the most conservative were nothing short of the same.  I have personally witnessed.  Now I have never heard Bro. Hyles preach against REO Speedwagon but it just so happens that my first full album purchase was by this group.  I liked a few songs I heard on the radio.  I wanted those songs.  I didn't even look at the cover when I bought it.  The album cover was brought to my attention by my mother but I was clueless.  It was of a half nude prostitute fixing her lipstick after just being with a man.  Nice Image for a 14 year old to have in his collection.  Quite Godly let alone the album was called Hi Infidelity.  The songs were immoral.  I was wrong.  So if Bro. Hyles had preached against it, I suspect he would have been right, wouldn't you?

Bro. Hyles preached against smoking, I never smoked.  Brother Hyles preached against drinking alcohol, I never drank.  I suspect those couple of things saved me some trouble in this life.  No he didn't get it all right.  None of us do.  But you don't even have half a wit to know the difference.

Regardless of how you currently feel about Dr. Hyles or FBCH, there was probably a time when you admired him greatly.  What was it about him that "captivated" you?  What caused you to put him on a pedestal?

*As always, one idea or trait per post.  Remember, it's all about the numbers!

He was a baptist "don". '92 YC
That was the year he yelled at that girl for leaving a service and told her the next time she comes back to put on clothes.

He knew where the beef was.

He was a paratrooper in WW2

He had the largest church in the world. I thought my pastor was bluffing. Then at the orthodontist office, I was reading a Time Magazine, and they listed FBC as one of the top 5 largest churches in the world. At that time, I think the Moonies were #1

His humor. Man was he quick witted. Even towards the end.

When I was a kid, I counted his coughs in a sermon. I told him when he was at our church. He brought it up a couple of years later in a sermon. I thought, wow!! I was that ill punk.

How he out did Oprah with gifts and surprises at PS.

How he took the bus kids. Because My family was reached partially due to the bus ministry.

Now there is a claim to fame!  He told that story countless times.  I think it really bothered him.  He always viewed the throat problem as his "thorn in the flesh."  Later in life, it seemed to clear and he would proclaim what a miracle it was.  I believe your story caused him to believe that his throat problem was hindering people from hearing the message.  That is what really affected him.

He cared about me personally.

I believe that sums it up for many people. I really do believe that he genuinely cared for individuals.

And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." I Peter 4:8

He picked me up by the scruff of my collar and threw me back down in a church service.  8)

Hey Al, is it possible you are Schaap writing from prison. We all know the last few years of your preaching you were waaaaaaay off. Seems like there is a trend in your post. Very similar.......to stories from your sermons.

Schaap really liked Bro. Martinez and loved having him sing at Pastors School. Schaap's buddies Larry Brown and Tony Hutson have had Bro. Martinez sing at their churches. Hutson even sings background on Alvin's latest record.

Schaap is about in depth as much as this guy has been on the FFF.  So, yeah it could be him.

Great point.  I attended HAC/FBCH for four years.  I never met with Dr. Hyles one-on-one.  I have spoken to him briefly two or three times.  He did not know my name.  I always felt like he genuinely cared for and loved me.

Schaap may turn over a new life like Swaggert and he may join the TBN crowd. Wouldn't mind hearing him on TBN.
