Why were we so "enamored" with Dr. Hyles?

It's possible I misremember the "Jack Hyles/my preacher" line. It was a memory from the early 70's. I'm reasonably proud to remember it at all.

He hated to lose.  One year we went to  Bill Rice Ranch and the girls' softball team beat his rival Texas.  The entire girls' team called collect to the church and we told him we won.  He was elated, first that we won and second, we beat Texas.  I'll never forget that!

He was MY preacher all my life!

OMG - I forgot that song - but I do remember not saying Jack Hyles' but my Preacher's face!!!

I never really was.

Funny thing is, I always felt like he was trying to push us towards Jesus.

I was shocked, when I got to college.

The HBers came to me and said "sit up front with us, on Wed. chapels".

I thought "like he needs one more cheerleader".

I sat up there once, watched the circus, went back to my spot, and on about my business.

Dr.Hyles depended on people who didnt kiss up to him, and later on in his life, he depended on me.  He always knew where I was, in the auditorium, and would look at me, or even call on me, often.

It is all so distant now....

What do you mean by "he would call on me often?"

Regardless of how you currently feel about Dr. Hyles or FBCH, there was probably a time when you admired him greatly.  What was it about him that "captivated" you?  What caused you to put him on a pedestal?

*As always, one idea or trait per post.  Remember, it's all about the numbers!

Not sure that I ever admired him "greatly"; first heard about him in the early 1980s and heard him in the mid-1980s. Because of his work in Garland, he seemed to be well-known among IFB churches in the Dallas area (where I lived at the time).  I didn't have much discernment at the time, and everyone who knew him, and most of the people I knew were exalting him, so I just kind of went along.  I remember going with enthusiastic Hyles-followers to hear him preach in the area; he took a passage of Scripture and turned it around and claim it said the opposite of what it said. That made me wonder, but everyone else said it was a "great message", so I figured maybe I was the one with the wrong understanding of what the Bible said.  A few years later, went with another group of ardent followers, and the emcee called Dr Hyles "God".  Hyles was there and heard it and accepted it. This incident killed any little enthusiasm I may have had, but I did it around the group I was with, as they were all strong Hyles followers.  I'm sure they would have defended the blasphemy as "every knows he was joking"; I'm sorry, but I don't see the Bible saying that blasphemy is OK as long as you are "joking".  I don't think this is a subject to joke about.

I continued to go with that crowd to hear him now and then; he could appear passionate about what he was preaching, and he was a master with words.  He knew how to work an audience.

I remember discovering, about 15 years later, that there were some groups of people that took a stand against Hyles, to my shock, since I had been immersed in a culture that considered Hyles the greatest Christian that had ever lived.

Bro. Hyles was simply the pastor I grew up with.  He was the man that lead us, as a church, through things like the burned auditorium (one of my first memories), building the educational building, starting the high school, weddings and graduations and funerals, and, of course, church 3 times a week and an occasional HB chapel.  I am and probably will always be sentimental about him as a part of my childhood & adolescence.

I have less positive feelings from the years after the college started, and felt no real connection to him from the mid-70's on (except for my dad's funeral which Bro. Hyles made so beautiful & precious).

I'm stuck somewhere between loving my memories of him and realizing that had I come into the church a few years later, the experience would have probably been completely different - and not in a good way.  I know I view him through the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, but I don't have any problem admitting he had faults and weaknesses.  (Then again, I don't blindly believe every accusation thrown his way, either.)  ;)

Britches. It is britches. Good grief, if you are going to stretch the truth, at least make it sound Baptacular.

Just look up on "Jack Hyles women wearing pants" on YouTube. There are plenty of clips of Hyles and even his crony Larry Brown going off on gals in "Britches".

To the man with the man-crush on Alvin:  Since your source of all things Bro. Hyles is the internet, stay quiet and let the people who lived there for 20 plus years do the analyzing.  Feel free to make comments, but recognize that others might have more experience and information.  Good luck in your lust of all things Alvin.

I'm not sure if Bro. Martinez ever sang at Pastor's School during Hyles' time but he did sing at Pastor's School during the Schaap administration. Schaap thought Martinez hung the moon and stars and so did the comedian Tony Hutson. Hutson's had Martinez sing at his church numerous times.

How many have you have ever seen Hyles throw microphone stands/kick over microphone stands on the stage? He's done it a few times and there's video proof of it.

Never.  You we're telling those jokes in High School, probably.

What do you mean by "he would call on me often?"
He would talk to me during the sermon, or even bring me up on the platform.

Once he said "Mike Ramsey is the worst kid who ever grew up here".
He was trying to encourage the wayward 20somethings.
My wife looked at me, "Why did he say that about you?"
"I told you I had a past."
"Yes, but you didn't tell me that you had that much of a past."

Thanks, Bro. Hyles.

That's a rough way to gain notoriety!
