Hyles certainly was revered, world famous, and charismatic. He was real tight with Jack Treiber (a Hyles Disciple).
Other things to not about the "Pope"
1 He started to wear dark sunglasses quite a bit starting in the late 80's. He looked like Ray Charles in the pulpit when he had them on. (Dr.Hyles wore plastic frame glasses from the 60s to death. I don't know why he didn't wear wire frames. I was told that he preached against them due to the hippies and wouldn't wear them. His glasses were not sun tinted either.)
2. Hyles usually threw microphone stands or kicked them over quite a bit. (There are videos on YouTube of it).
3. He had a personal vendetta against John MacArthur and John Piper that he carried with him to the end of his life. (Look up vendetta. He didn't have one against him. He had a vendetta against Calvinism, which MacArthur leans towards + MacArthurs view of the blood of Christ)
4. He had a personal vendetta against Oral Roberts, Robert Schuller, Paul Crouch, Kenneth Copeland, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim & Tammy Bakker that he kept for the remainder of his life. ( his fight was with their doctrine. As a kid I heard him say that he was rooting for Jim Bakker and hoped the accusations were unfounded. So much for a vendetta)
5. He didn't like Pensacola or Greg Mutsch. ( he didn't like a school ran church. Also his fight with PCC was about their stance on he KJV. He gave them a chance in he 90s to pick a side before he preached about them at pastors school. PCC thought it was funny because they were a bit late to the TR party and were in the final days of research about the issue when hyles called. I heard this from Greg Mutch and Del Johnson)
6. He always advocated his personal hatred of CCM music, girls wearing pants, girls wearing shorts, long hair on men, men wearing shorts etc. (he preached against any music that was not God honoring. He stood by modesty and and view that Clothing maytag bravos water pump w10281682 substitutesshould cover and not cling. He was against men having long hair, so is the bible 1cor 11:14. Grab a year book and look at the men wearing shorts In The basketball games at HAC. Grab a HBHS year book and look at he wrestlers wearing singlets)
7. He had his own "comedy team" at Youth Conference that performed 1920's Vaudeville that was so behind the times since he didn't want the kids to listen to George Carlin, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor etc.
(The skits were not vaudeville. Most were pretty funny. Anyone remember YC 93 when the dude fell from the ceiling? PS you'd tell your youth group to listen to Richard Pryor?)
8. His cronies became famous in the Fundamental World (Jack Trieber/Larry Brown/Tony Hutson/Jim Vineyard/Al Lacy/Larry Smith/Phil Kidd)
(Larry brown, Tony Hutson, Larry Smith and Phil Kidd were not his cronies and not too famous.
1. Brown pastored in Iowa. Didn't preach at FBCH until hyles died, by my recollection
2. Hutson father was in he boys club with Hyles, not Tony
3. Smith pastored and moved to Hammond and taught personal evangelism (knock 7 times) I heard him preach In chapel 2 times in 4 years
4. Phil Kidd was never in the Hyles camp. He was too radical for Moses.)
9. He almost always drove Cadillacs or Lincolns.
(He bought his missions teacher, Maurice Paulson, the exact car he drove. A blue Dodge Shadow. Yep that's close to a caddy. The church bought him a high end 2 door Mercury cougar for 37 yrs of service. It's was not a caddy or lincoln.)
10. He claimed to hate computers with a passion. (What old person doesn't?)
It's very obvious to those of us that were there that you need to go back to the minors, son. You are out of your league.
