Why were we so "enamored" with Dr. Hyles?

Hyles certainly was revered, world famous, and charismatic. He was real tight with Jack Treiber (a Hyles Disciple).

Other things to not about the "Pope"

1 He started to wear dark sunglasses quite a bit starting in the late 80's. He looked like Ray Charles in the pulpit when he had them on.

2. Hyles usually threw microphone stands or kicked them over quite a bit. (There are videos on YouTube of it).

3. He had a personal vendetta against John MacArthur and John Piper that he carried with him to the end of his life.

4. He had a personal vendetta against Oral Roberts, Robert Schuller, Paul Crouch, Kenneth Copeland, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim & Tammy Bakker that he kept for the remainder of his life.

5. He didn't like Pensacola or Greg Mutsch.

6. He always advocated his personal hatred of CCM music, girls wearing pants, girls wearing shorts, long hair on men, men wearing shorts etc.

7. He had his own "comedy team" at Youth Conference that performed 1920's Vaudeville that was so behind the times since he didn't want the kids to listen to George Carlin, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor etc.

8. His cronies became famous in the Fundamental World (Jack Trieber/Larry Brown/Tony Hutson/Jim Vineyard/Al Lacy/Larry Smith/Phil Kidd)

9. He almost always drove Cadillacs or Lincolns.

10. He claimed to hate computers with a passion

Quite a bit of legitimate stuff to be concerned about about Jack Hyles but your list shows you didn't know much about him.

There are many many ppl that do not know or have never heard of Jack Hyles or Vinyard or Trieber or the rest of them.

Its apparent that you do not realize that there is a side of the IFB that have never nor will never mess with that side of the IFB.  They have never been tainted by the JH model.

I could go on and on.  If you wish to get me started on something, just mention how "world famous" JH is.  :)

Regardless of how you currently feel about Dr. Hyles or FBCH, there was probably a time when you admired him greatly.  What was it about him that "captivated" you?  What caused you to put him on a pedestal?

I never put him on a pedestal but I did stand in awe of the popularity he had among the preachers of his day. Let's face it the guy could preach and hold the attention of the crowd. I had the occasion to hear him personally just one time and I was immediately "captivated" how he could command the attention of everyone in the room. He was kind of like the E.F. Hutton of the IFB world. (you younger ones will have to ask your parents if you didn't get the E.F. Hutton analogy)  In fact men were tripping all over themselves trying to hangup his coat or get him some water or anything they thought he needed. My problem with all that is that he let these men put him on a pedestal.

I agree with Tom. Most of this is way off base.
(For example the boys athletics teams and PE classes wore shorts for at least 10 years under Hyles.)
Plenty more but Tom is more knowledgeable than I.

...just for the record, there is a whole bunch of completely inaccurate information here. Makes me wonder if you knew anything about him first hand at all.

Hyles side.

I admired his two individual hairs that were each 14 foot long and how he wound them around and around his head, sealing them with Consort Men's Hair Spray.

I was enamored by his love for Cheese Quarter Pounders and Teibels.

I admired him the first time I saw and heard him preach in person, and he jogged in place almost the entire message.

If you ever heard Hyles preach or watch some of his YouTube videos you would know he vehemently detested "Women wearing pants", CCM music, Paul Crouch/Oral Roberts/Robert Schuller, and he was not a fan of John MacArthur.

He hated to lose.  One year we went to  Bill Rice Ranch and the girls' softball team beat his rival Texas.  The entire girls' team called collect to the church and we told him we won.  He was elated, first that we won and second, we beat Texas.  I'll never forget that!

He was MY preacher all my life!

Hmmmm...vaguely I recall.....from Bill Rice Ranch...

Hammond is a wonderful place
Filled with Glory and Grace
I want to see Jack Hyles face
When we come home in first place

He did something the rest of us wanted to do, and so we followed him to learn how he did it.

This is probably the most accurate post on this thread.

Dr. Hyles came to preach at a church near my parent's church. They brought a group from their church to go hear him. One of their group was a new convert with a newborn. The baby made noise in the meeting, and Dr. Hyles berated that new convert publicly. She stopped coming to church after that.

I have been in several services where Dr. Hyles had to deal with a parent who didn't have enough sense to not bring a baby into the service.  Each time Dr. Hyles was gracious when asking the mother to take the baby to the nursery.  I've seen him stop and have the crowd bow their heads in prayer while someone helped the lady.  I've seen him ask an usher to help the lady find the nursery. Personally, I've never seen him act in a "rude" way.

Dr. Hyles felt that the preaching service was the most important thing.  He wasn't going to let misbehaving teens, talking adults, or a crying baby ruin the service.

This is just my personal observation.  He may have acted differently at other times.  I have also noticed that some people get offended even if they are treated respectfully.
