Why were we so "enamored" with Dr. Hyles?

Regardless of how you currently feel about Dr. Hyles or FBCH, there was probably a time when you admired him greatly.  What was it about him that "captivated" you?  What caused you to put him on a pedestal?

*As always, one idea or trait per post.  Remember, it's all about the numbers!

He was successful doing that which many dreamed of doing.

I did not immediately put him on a pedestal. But I remember coming to visit with my parents and we loved his preaching. I came from Northern Wisconsin, and there are not too many preachers like that! He could hold my interest!

Others whom I admired looked up to Dr. Hyles which in turn caused me to do the same.

His preaching style was second to none.  I came from a dead GARBC church and FBCH was like a breath of fresh air.

I always felt that he truly cared for others.

While I was taught to respect my Pastor I was never taught to put him on a pedestal. So once I started attending HAC it was a whole new world. I might not have drank the koolaid totally! But I'm still guilty of thinking Hyles was on the right hand of God!!

His sense of humor seemed to draw me to him.

He had written so many books which were easy to read and which stirred me.

He created a new sub-culture in humankind called "The HACker"!

Like the rest of us, he couldn't keep his pants on a funnel either!

He did something the rest of us wanted to do, and so we followed him to learn how he did it.

This is more true than many realize. While we warn against pragmatism, it is hard to weed it out of ourselves.

Should we also ask the question, "Why are so many still enamored?"

My acquaintance with Hyles is a little different. My parents really got into the Hyles movement in the early 80s, but by the time I was old enough to remember they were done with him. We've actually talked about this recently. A couple of things sent them running for the hills:
1. My mom was drafted to do personal work at one of the FBCH meetings. She was supposed to lead a little girl to the Lord, but the girl didn't comprehend the gospel. Mom wouldn't lead her in the false prayer. FBCH leadership (not Hyles personally, but those who she was answering to at the time) was furious with her.
2. They attended a bus meeting. Someone had resigned from a bus ministry by letter. Said letter was openly read and mocked at the meeting.
3. Dr. Hyles came to preach at a church near my parent's church. They brought a group from their church to go hear him. One of their group was a new convert with a newborn. The baby made noise in the meeting, and Dr. Hyles berated that new convert publicly. She stopped coming to church after that.

So I never had Dr. Hyles on a pedestal. I graduated from a Christian school that was 100% Hyles to the hilt, so I was plenty exposed to it. We had Eddie Lapina preach there every year. We went to youth conference. We fellowshipped with other Hyles schools/churches and combined with them for summer camp. Hyles tour groups came often. Dr. Hyles preached at the church there, and I went to hear him.

I think Dr. Hyles was a master orator. He just had "it." That's why people were so enamored with him. I do not believe the huge crowds or the conversion "numbers" prove that God was in it (by that standard, Adolf Hitler and Joel Osteen are history's most God-blessed men).  I know that the Lord worked in the lives of many of you while you were at HAC, but I believe He did that work in spite of and not because of Jack Hyles.

Hyles certainly was revered, world famous, and charismatic. He was real tight with Jack Treiber (a Hyles Disciple).

Other things to not about the "Pope"

1 He started to wear dark sunglasses quite a bit starting in the late 80's. He looked like Ray Charles in the pulpit when he had them on.

2. Hyles usually threw microphone stands or kicked them over quite a bit. (There are videos on YouTube of it).

3. He had a personal vendetta against John MacArthur and John Piper that he carried with him to the end of his life.

4. He had a personal vendetta against Oral Roberts, Robert Schuller, Paul Crouch, Kenneth Copeland, Jimmy Swaggert, Jim & Tammy Bakker that he kept for the remainder of his life.

5. He didn't like Pensacola or Greg Mutsch.

6. He always advocated his personal hatred of CCM music, girls wearing pants, girls wearing shorts, long hair on men, men wearing shorts etc.

7. He had his own "comedy team" at Youth Conference that performed 1920's Vaudeville that was so behind the times since he didn't want the kids to listen to George Carlin, Robin Williams, Richard Pryor etc.

8. His cronies became famous in the Fundamental World (Jack Trieber/Larry Brown/Tony Hutson/Jim Vineyard/Al Lacy/Larry Smith/Phil Kidd)

9. He almost always drove Cadillacs or Lincolns.

10. He claimed to hate computers with a passion

...just for the record, there is a whole bunch of completely inaccurate information here. Makes me wonder if you knew anything about him first hand at all.

Ladies and gentleman......

This is what someone without a clue looks like.

Edit: Tom beat me to it. Slow on the submit button.

You forgot to add that he had been abducted by aliens several times.  I know that for a fact!

I thought you were talking about Jack Trieber because this list is not relevant to Bro. Hyles.
