I don't think it's a secret that Hyles hated Falwell for many reasons. I guess since Falwell wasn't one of the "Good 'Ol Boys", Hyles and his cronies took to bashing him.

This "Academic" article about Jack Hyles quotes Jerry Falwell as praising Hyles: "Falwell said that 'Hyles will be remembered as a leader in evangelism through the local church.' Falwell also said, 'He inspired me as a young pastor to win others to Christ through Sunday school, the pulpit, and personal witnessing. He made a great contribution to the calls [sic] of Christ'".

More quotes from this article: "Over the course of his nearly fifty years as a church leader, Hyles was criticized for sexual scandals in his church. His controversial doctrinal positions often put him at odds with other Christians; even with other fundamentalist Baptists. . . . In his book, 'Enemies of Soulwinning,' Jack Hyles taught that one could not be born again if any other Bible except the King James Version was used. . . .Robert Sumner, a Baptist evangelist and an author, accused Hyles of running his church in an authoritarian, almost 'cultist' manner in an article called 'The Saddest Story We Ever Published' in Sumner's 'The Biblical Evangelist' newsletter. Sumner detailed Nischik's charges and contended that Rev. Hyles has strayed from biblical teaching and into cultlike mind control." The article also references the accusations by Nischik and Glover, and the Ballenger case, etc.

I read the book by Glover in my younger more robust fighting fundamentalist apologist years. Glover used to post here frequently of course and seemed plenty intelligent and nice enough, but his book smacked of innuendo and speculation and was light on convincing evidence in my not so humble opinion. I'd like to read it again now just to see if my perspective has changed.

Of course having said that, I am not claiming that there wasn't plenty of ammunition for those who did not agree with Hyles, and he did seem to foster a authoritarian cult-like man worship environment from some of the things that I'm aware of. The only time that I ever heard him speak in person was at a church in Delaware Ohio during a Revival midweek. When he came into the building it was like a rockstar entered the building and it made me uncomfortable and I politely told my pastor so.

Hyles going off on Liberty & Falwell going "accredited" was another grudge Jack carried with him to the end.

I found his book to be quite on the money....I have a copy of Glover's book, and I've had people from HAC/FBCH offer me in excess of $2K for it as they want to destroy it. I also have Vic Nischiks CD and some printouts. There has to be something to it if they're willing to keep upping the offer for these materials.

Jack's 70th birthday celebration. I bet some of you from HAC-FBC may remember this.

It amazes me to this day that the Hyles apologists don't see anything wrong with that.
Without getting wordy, when you have closed the ranks so tight and won't listen to ANY criticism of your behavior/beliefs then the criticisms become a justifying mentality that you are being attacked by liberals and wannabes because you are doing right and they are a tool of da debil.

For those with time on their hands - here is the Mother Of All "Jack Hyles Exposed" web pages, courtesy of Steve Van Nattan of the Blessed Quietness web site, formerly known as "Balaam's Ass."

Van Nattan pulls no punches in his critique of the Jacks: "With the arrest and jailing of Jack Schaap, Jack Hyles' hand picked successor at First Baptist of Hammond, who is also Hyles' son-in-law, this story finally has its final verdict-- These men will burn in hell. . . .No one in Christendom, nor in witchcraft, nor the sodomites, have sent me more filthy and hateful mail than the Hyles people. They are bullies with no restraint. Their level of hate is beyond measure. In fact, I have lost my confidence in the Baptist concept. The lust for porn, power, and pesos by Baptist preachers, by and large, is beyond anything I have seen in the rest of Christendom. . . .If you take pleasure in First Baptist Church of Hammond, Indiana, or if you defend the two Jacks, YOU are taking pleasure in their vile perverted sex crazed program. You will burn in hell. You are a BASTARD"

"LETTER FROM A PASTOR: I pastor a Baptist church here in Alabama, I also attended Hyles college for 2 1/2 years before I realized my need to move on. Since then, I have seen so many churches torn apart over loyalty to this man. The fundamental issue of Jesus Christ was always laid to the side as people argued over Hyles, Bob Jones, Lester relief
[I think he means Roloff] or any other person they gave their loyalty to."
