If not for Dave Hyles.............

How did Bro. Hyles, a Southern Baptist originally, end up in Hammond? How did they even know him?
Also, I'm wondering if HAC started after Bro. Hyles chose the bus kids.  It seems that the $$ would have to come from somewhere.

Jo, you're not going to believe this, but it's true.

FBCH was an American Baptist church that was looking for a pastor. A deacon brought in an article on Hyles and said that was who they were looking for. Years later, a HAC student found out where the deacon's store was, and several of us went to see him. It was either a junk shop or a pawn shop. He was quiet, polite, and told us that the story was true.

We realized that he had left the church, but none of us asked him why.

The deacon's name was George Huizenga (sp?).  He and his wife, Beulah, were long time FBC members, but
I don't remember them ever leaving FBC, in fact, I think that both of their funerals were at FBC.

George was in charge of the LORD's supper and ordered the bread through his book store. He also sold fur coats.
Both he and his wife left the church when God took them to heaven. George in 1983 and Beulah in 1985. They were members since 1926 and 1918 respectively.

It  was the sexual immorality that was going on between the bus workers daughters and the bus kids. I did not want my daughters getting pregnant or my son's getting the bus girls pregnate. We all left the bus ministry as a family before that sexual immorality got into my family. The bus ministry is a dangerous place for young people. My children are all married adults in their 40s and early 50s. None of them got pregnant out of wedlock.

What most do not realize is that the reason so many HAC students leave is due to sexual immorality. The bus ministry is a dangerous place for young people.
I do not want to tell all the details but much of it was due to Bro. Hyles flippant attitude toward immorality on his staff. How could he really come out against it as far too many people knew what he was doing in his office.

We have been paying the price as a congregation all these years and still no official repentance.

Kind of curious... where was your route?  Do you feel that the same problem is still prevalent?

It was in East Chicago. Several of the workers had teenaged daughters like me. Their's got pregnant, mine did not because we got out.
Moral of the story is don't take your teenaged daughters on a bus route where you pick up hot spanish guys.
Yes it is still a problem on the bus routes and at HAC. Girls are still getting pregnant before marriage. Funny how that works. The number of young hot Spanish guys is going up not decreasing.

George was on the pulpit committee and brought in an ad from Zondervan's catalog. It featured a book called "Let's Build An Evangelistic Church" by Jack Hyles.
George said this is the guy we need. Of course John Rice who was at Wheaton had been working on Bro. Hyles for a while.

Bro. Hyles was not always that big into soul winning as evidenced by the title of his book from the 50s.

I just read this late last night about the HAC girls and Spanish boys. ....just some common questions didn't you talk to anyone in control? If so what was their answers. I just had dinner with Dr Evans and he is a man of integrity and honor.

PS I knew bus captains dating bus girls ..... >:(

This was around the time Joy was involved with Dave. I am sure he knows all about it as his own daughter was one of the victims of the immorality plaguing the church.

I doubt he knew about what was going on in the Church side of the bus ministry although some of the HAC teachers had the problem when they worked in the Church side. Remember he was a new guy and very green. Took him decades to acquire gravitas.

The people I worked with on the buses were Church people not HAC people.

If I mentioned HAC it was the hooking up going on at the college that I referred to.
They even installed an alarm on every door in the buildings at HAC to try to cut down on the pregnancy rate. I don't know if it worked though because they just kept getting pregnant.

My wife saw how the Spanish boys gravitated to my daughters so we got out before anything happened.

Several of our friends daughters did get pregnant.

I am thinking of a HAC teacher whose daughter got pregnant by one of the hot Spanish boys, she married him and they are still married today.

As to talking to someone in control, the bus captains were close personal friends of Bro. Hyles and were great men of the church. Maybe you have heard the saying "Great Men Have Great Needs".

When we talked to Bro. Hyles he would use one of his "10 commandments of receiving accusations" against you. He would have none of it. I recently posted them one at a time.

Again, and i know i am beating a dead horse here, but that would have been my queue to leave.  I have left ministries for much less reason.

Did God call Jim Vineyard to HAC in order to stop Dave Hyles?

You must have also kept your daughters away from the young hot pastor's son youth director.

When did Jack Hyles learn of Dave's behavior?

Many pastors still contend that Jack did not find out about Dave's indiscretions until long after he left to pastor at Miller Road. Has any staff or deacons from that time confirmed publically the cover up happened? If Jack knew, how long did he allow Dave to continue as youth pastor before he arranged for him to leave FBCH. Did he knowingly allow Dave to prey on young girls, hopping he would get his act together.

If so many people knew of Dave behavior, why didn't they speak out and why didn't someone warn Miller Road about Dave sordid history.

Yes my daughters were never allowed to go to the Hyles' house for anything. We successfully kept them away from that predator.
We were so glad to see him leave.

Those pastors claiming Jack Hyles had no knowledge are either ignorant or willfully lying. He had been told many, many, many times. He chose to ignore it - see BGW's posts on how to ignore accusations that Jack Hyles espoused. And he chose the same tactic that the Catholics used when a priest was reported - move him to another ministry. He wasn't just guilty of allowing Dave to prey on the young women at FBC. He was also guilty of allowing Bob Olsen to continue to molest junior high boys after that had been reported. He actually allowed Bob to be the junior high choir director and then a teacher at HBHS after the molestation(s) had been reported.

I know three deacons whose daughters had been propositioned at the youth center, but I did not personally witness it. So according to Bro. Hyles 10 commandments I was to believe that it had never happened. Oh the girls were more than happy to satisfy Bro. Dave's needs. Girls loved him.
Many of the girls instead of feeling preyed upon were honored to serve Bro. Dave and meet the needs of this Great Man Of God.

I think I told elsewhere when my wife and I attended Dave and Paula's wedding, how a row of girls in front of us just couldn't keep quiet about their own opportunities to satisfy Bro. Dave. They broke out into raucous laughter when Bro. Hyles was pontificating that Dave and Paula had never even kissed before the wedding, what a crock. It was well known, but we had never personally witnessed Dave's indiscretions.

I do have personal knowledge of one time when he was outed at a deacons meeting.

The Police Chief of the Town of Griffith, Bill Weddle, was in the meeting and he stood up and told the story of how he caught Bro. Dave and BR nude in the back seat of Dave's car late at night in Griffith, fully involved in an the act of marriage. Bro. Dave was so engaged that Bill had to announce his presence three times before he got their attention.

He then asked Bro. Hyles what he was going to do about it seeing this was now happening regularly with Bro. Dave. Bill recited other times in other nearby towns when his cop buddies had interrupted Bro. Dave in acts of marriage in their towns. I do not believe Bro. Dave ever got a ticket for public indecency, he was so well known, he always got a pass. It was just Bro. Dave doing his thing.

This is the one thing that caused Bro. Hyles to move Dave out. This was certainly not the first time he was told.

His "10 Commandments of Receiving Accusations", were effective at keeping the accusations at bay until this meeting.

Pastors who claim Bro. Hyles did not know are probably well practiced at "The 10 Commandments of Receiving Accusations". They may well use them to control their congregations, who knows?

By the way, Bill Weddle was a deacon and one of Bro. Hyles most trusted personal security people. You always saw him with Bro. Hyles in public.
Oh, shortly after this Bill left the FBCH. Guess he had had enough. We are still good friends.

...there wouldn't be all these fun threads to read and write.
