Those Barber kids were a real piece of work. Wonder whatever happened to them?

:P

I hear Dan became a slave to Binaca.  Last I knew he was living in a VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!!

So he's now a motivational speaker?

Preaching against smoking DOOBIES I hear.

He's struggling with a serious heart condition but still preaching strong.
I still love him dearly.  Thankful I have been able to be in his church for 29 years...
We spent Christmas with Sonja and Chris  ;)

Sweet kids...beautiful girls.  <3
They sing so well...
They are playing instruments...Momma's done great!

While I was a student at HAC there were always a few "high profile" students.  The "high profile" status may have come from a position held by the student before or while they were at HAC.  It may have been because of the family from which they came.  It may have been because of the church from which they came.  They just seem to stand out in one way or another.

So, Hacker Nation, who do you remember that would be classified as a "high profile" student?

*One name per post.  Remember, it's all about the numbers!

Anyone remember Ollie Conley?  Red hair.  Friend of Dave Hyles?

He was from my church.  We called him Dan.  He started using his given name, Ollie,  when he went to HAC.  Quite the story there.  He was one rough character before he got saved.  His mom played the piano in our church and our church prayed for him for a long time.  When he got saved, it was quite the moment!  Shortly afterward he went to HAC.  Because of his awesome story/history, Dave Hyles took him under his wing immediately.  Then he ruined Dan.  Dan was a newer Christian and seeing all the hypocrisy, favoritism, etc. hurt him.  Then he got in trouble with Dave.  Dave got promoted and Dan got expelled.  He never got over it.  Ended up back in the world and died in prison. Another victim of the "system".  Gotta wonder how many stories there are just like that.
I knew & did some ministry stuff with him, he was quite a personality. He should have used that guitar & started a HAC worship band.  ;D  Sorry to hear how he died. Didn't he marry a HAC girl? Last I remember hearing is that he went to work for Ron Boldman in CA, punched some guy during an altar call.

I see you are from Minster, OH. Whatever happened to Boldman?

Did Dan attend HBHS for a short time? Was he in a trio singing group with Dave Hyles? Who was the third guy in that trio?

Dan did not attend HB. He was in his twenties when he came to HAC.  He did marry a HAC girl, but they later divorced.
Ron Boldman served as a military chaplain in California for many years.  He is now the pastor of the Cowboy Chapel in Branson, MO.  Pastor Boldman was a great influence in my life as a teenager.  He is a sincere man loved my many.  And those of us who were there in the 70's respect him and admire him greatly.  He used to speak at HAC chapel on occasion until the whole Dan Conley thing happened.  He brought Dan home and tried very hard to help him through the mess.  That exposure to the inner workings at FBCH/HAC caused him to disassociate himself with them.  Pastor Boldman took a church in California and Dan went with him.  Not exactly sure what happened out there except that Dan's marriage fell apart and he went downhill from there. Dan was a musician.  He played the guitar, sang, and wrote music.  I believe he was in a band before he got saved.  He had such a desire to serve the Lord after he got saved.  So sad.

Ummm, "they" aren't anywhere. They divorced and Theron is openly gay.

Why would a gay guy (even if he was in the closet at the time) spend hours looking into girl's eyes?

$
desire to pastor
trying to fight it at the time

...any one or combination of those

Well, he is still "pastoring" and likely making more money than he ever would in a HACite church.

The point is, I am trying to understand the drive to look straight if you aren't.

I bet he wasn't the only gay male at HAC to "try" to be or appear hetero. I remember thinking that a couple of prominent students and maybe faculty might be gay when I was there. I was right about at least two of them. I bet if you think about it hard, you probably know someone who is dating or is married to a man that is clearly gay. 1970's era HAC was probably about the worst place and time ever to be gay.

I am going to borrow your comment and start a new thread on the fighting page. You have provoked a thought.

He/she/it is not pastoring, he/she/it is a stewardess.

The $ certainly wasn't in reference to pastoring... literally lol. Back in the day, as a student, who was he trying to marry?

I would guess that he was not gay at that time.

Maybe to him it would make more sense to hide it, perhaps try to supress feelings of guilt in hopes it would "go away". Speculation on my part. Only he could give the actual reason.

If his dad was a pastor, he may have felt pressured to "turn out right", so he did all the things he was supposed to do. Eventually he didn't want to wear the mask anymore, so he took it off.  That actually describes a lot of people.  Gay and straight.

No, I'm pretty sure he was gay back then. He was soft and effeminate. It was no surprise to me at all when the divorce happened and he came out.

Not to provoke an argument, but I don't think adult males "turn" gay.
