Beer and Bible Study?

Because we know the ends justifies the means.  That's in the Bible somewhere, I'm sure of it.

If Mac's biggest gripe with the YRR crowd is that they don't mind having a drink every now and then, then his biggest gripe is that they don't adhere to his own extra-Biblical standards. Yeah...I'm fine with that.

That does seem to be the bottom line. Without getting into all the side issues you two have been arguing about, I don't see how that isn't what Johnny Mac is doing in the OP link.

I addressed Mohler's comments, as was requested.  rsc2a responded to my comments about Mohler's position.  If he doesn't want to hear the explanation then the point is moot.  The devil is usually in the details, and merely saying "if Mac & Mohler's biggest gripe....drink now and then" is an inaccurate characterization of their position, misinformed, and/ or ignorant (no offense intended).

Fair enough. But as for me, I've already heard enough of Mac's and Mohler's full explanations on other issues to know that I won't find them convincing. Without knocking their sincerity, their love for the Lord, or their scholarship, I just don't see Christianity or the world the way those two do. But I'd be happy to have a beer with them.  :D

I don't always drink beer at a Bible study, but when I do, I prefer a microbrew.

Stay thirsty, my friends.

I don't drink beer at all. Nasty stuff.

But give me a bit of coke with some rum splashed in, and I'm happy.

Perhaps some of you might come and give your testimony on the blessings of beer at one of our Celebrate Recovery meetings.
Monday nights @6:30. Dinner is served but alcohol isn't welcome!
We're legalistic like that!  :D

In my experience, many Christians who drink alcohol seem to flaunt that fact and often assume that I somehow think less of them because I don't drink.

And they seem disappointed when they find I don't give a rats hiney whether they drink or not.....again, that's my experience here in the so called Bible belt.

???

I wouldn't want people giving testimony on the blessings of banana splits at a weight watchers meeting, either.  But that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with banana splits.

Yeah, exact same thing......I counsel people every week who's lives are ruined by banna splits, not to mention those who are killed when hit head on by drivers under the influence of calories......

Guilty as charged.

I have stated repeatedly that I don't think drinking is forbidden by scripture, but it sure comes with a warning label....which is what MacArthur is pointing out...

From earlier:

Do you want me to expand this beyond alcohol? Because I can guarantee that I can make this applicable to things you enjoy.

Another thing in scripture that is not forbidden but always comes with a warning label is excessive borrowing!
However, the results of borrowing, as a rule, are not as devastating or widespread as alcohol abuse.
I would also suggest that anything can be abused when taken to extreme, sex being an obvious example.

And, you have no idea what I might enjoy....

So, in order to be consistent here (with this particular reasoning regarding alcohol), we should abstain from sex, food, and sleep as well?

If you will point out my post that asks you to abstain, I'll edit it.....

My personal conviction to abstain from alcohol comes from my personal experience, my counseling experience as a pastor, and principles from Scripture.

The Bible does not command abstinance from alcohol, but constantly warns about consequences of alcohol abuse.
Now, that's a fact!

But, I have friends who drink, I have family members who drink, I have church members who drink, I share a forum with members who drink....and I don't care if they drink...

Lives and families can be destroyed and limbs can be lost because of banana splits, other sugary desserts and simple carbs in general.  It's just a slower process.  Granted, it's not as likely that someone with a blood sugar problem will cause an auto accident, but it's possible.  But that isn't the point.

Lives and families can be destroyed by the love of money.  Lives and families can be destroyed by sex.  Lives and families can be destroyed by cameras (e.g., the boy who committed suicide because he was photographed having gay sex).  Lives and families can be destroyed by guns, knives, and thousands of other deadly weapons.

It is not the THING that is evil, it is the ABUSE of the THING that is evil.  I can conjure up sob stories about guns, too.  It doesn't make guns evil.  It makes the abuse of guns (being careless with them, or using them to murder) evil.  And all the sob stories you can conjure up about lives being destroyed because someone drank alcohol don't make alcohol evil.  It just shows that the act of abusing alcohol is evil.

By the way, when people can't handle the THING, then it's WRONG to tempt them -- and that applies whether or not the THING is beer or a banana split or anything else.  That was my point.  It's the act of tempting the weak that is evil, not the THING.

I understand and agree, to a point.
Alcohol is not the problem, abuse of alcohol is the problem.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people with guns.

I would  say that alcohol abuse stands head and shoulders above other vices.
It is one of the most abused substances and the most costly....IN EVERY WAY!
To equate it with the other examples you used is only valid to a point.
Which goes to why the Bible is so filled with warnings about alcohol....God hardly placed it on even ground with overheating in the amount of Scripture given to it.
