Which preachers do you admire?

After 25 years of listening to the lineup that most of you have seen on the infamous page from Revival Fires,  my list of preachers I admire has changed in the last 6 months. I like David Jeremiah and I am REALLY starting to like Erwin Lutzer the pastor of Moody Church.

There are many that have been quite helpful and none that I agree with totally but here are some I give a regular listen to:

Crawford Loritts
Bryan Loritts
Eric Mason
Francis Chan
Tony Evans

Benny Hinn
Jimmy Swaggart
Kenneth Copeland
Robert Schuller
Kenneth Hagin
...and the list could go on and on.

Thankfully all of those individuals are behind me nowadays. Back when I was first saved, and didn't know any better, those where the men I listened to, and "learned" from.

The preachers I admire today are men who know the true Gospel, and preach / teach it without compromise. Men like my pastor, Tim Harlow. Radio preachers such as John MacArthur, James MacDonald and Charles Stanley. Men who are not followers of the false "name it and claim it" gospel.

:)

I forgot Tony Evans, David Jeremiah, John Maxwell I listen to them on the radio :) while I'm driving!!

My pastor Jim Blalock wise and humble servant

My home church pastor L.E. Traxler faithful servant

Pastor Vernon Nelms (Cotton) he is in heaven former pastor

Yes Cotton Nelms he was my pastor at Temple Heights Baptist in Tampa Fl before he moved to MI.  A preacher who never finished 8th grade, did not know how to read and write. Then got saved, and he learned how to  from the Bible from his wife. She lives in Tn now.

I admire...

Alistair Begg
Don Sunukjian
Clarence Sexton
Charles Spurgeon
My Dad
David Jeremiah

I don't care much for preachers who have to put on a show. Give me substance over style any day.

What?!?, no love for Joel Olsteen? Now I know you guys are all fundies of the IFB type ;)

Ever since Obama took over and the economy crashed, Joel has had to preach the Austerity Gospel.  It's not as popular as the Prosperity Gospel.

My pastor, Alistair Begg, and Adrian Rogers, among others.

I couldn't leave him out he had such a burden for souls..........Mrs Nelms was the best pastor's wife ...she reached out to every lady and touched our lives to this day some 40 years later. Bro Nelms baptized me when I was 13 years old. I was saved at 12 but my mom made me wait to know what I was doing. Our high school was reached for Christ because he had such a burden. Bro Nelms moved us from Stone Baptist Church to the new location the church has been in with a name change to Rochester Hills Baptist .  I know Bro Nelms is buried in Plant City. Thank you for letting me know that 4ever  :)

.. Which preachers do I admire (or listen to the most:))??...
David Jeremiah
John MacArthur
Charles Stanley
Mark Driscoll
Tony Evans
Tim Keller
I even watch me some T.D. Jakes every now and then:)
... Have heard dozens of IFB preachers... If I had to pick a couple out of that group, I'd probably choose...
Eric Capaci
Jack Trieber
Johnny Pope

I used to like to listen to Dr. Gene Scott before his father died and he got really bitter.  Yeah, he was crazy, but he also taught a lot of truths you'd never hear from anyone else.

Stolen from the HAC thread (sorta) - which preachers do you admire?

You know, for a guy who is pretty theologically inclined, I don't often find myself with a lot of time to listen to sermons, so my list is pretty short.

  • My church's last senior pastor (who just left at the end of the year to take the presidency of a nearby seminary) is one of the finest expository preachers I've ever heard.
  • John Piper, for the devotional quality and theological depth of his teaching.
  • Ditto D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, whose two volumes on the Sermon on the Mount are a must-read.
  • John MacArthur, for the practical value of his preaching and his boldness to critique contemporary Christianity when it goes off the rails.
  • Charles Spurgeon - not nicknamed the Prince of Preachers for nothing.
  • I have increasingly been drawn to John Bunyan of late.

The word "admire" is only found in a few translations. One of them being the the KJV.

Why should I use the Bible as a guide to English usage, any more than I would use the dictionary as a systematic theology?

Who was the pastor at Temple Heights from 1975 to 1986?

Could have been Ronald Schafer he followed Nelms and I left in 72. Not sure how long Schafer stayed other then he should have left earlier.

You're being silly. You can't understand systematic theology without understanding the language in-which its conveyed to you. When the Bible is accurately translated, it is a reliable source whereby to understand language. Which is nothing more than an expression of thought and deed.

Which is learned through general usage as well as formal study of grammar and lexicography, not by reading the Bible specifically.

When the Bible is accurately translated, it is a reliable source whereby to understand language. Which is nothing more than an expression of thought and deed.

And the Bible is impossible to understand if you don't first know the language it is printed in.  The Bible doesn't teach language; it assumes linguistic competency. You've got the cart before the horse.

I'm still waiting on him to explain how you select what kind of sandwich to have for lunch using the Bible.
