I only caught the first 10 minutes of the video, ( I'm at work). But he is wrong when he says that the excuse that believers use to drink because they drank in the Old and New Testaments. It's actually permissible by God himself, it's a sign of a blessing.
I will watch the rest later over a beer when I get home.

I am a teetotaler because that is the heritage I was brought up with.  Going back 5 generations before me, none of my ancestors have had anything to do with alcoholic drinks.

I will be the 6th generation and my children who are out on their own these last few years, are the 7th generation (that we can verify) to live according to this heritage.

I'm not looking for a teetotaler merit badge, or promoting myself as being better than others, this is just part of my place in the earth and a distinctive of the the people I descend from.

You didn't ask for Bible verses on this topic, and though I have them, I just am giving you my view on teetotalling.

I'm a teetotaler because it is also the heritage which my mother and her family passed on to me....and, like you, I passed it to my children by example.
I'm a teetotaler because my father was a drunk and I saw first hand the blessings that brought my family.

The straw man argument that drinking alcohol is sinful doesn't fly with me....the church I Pastor contains many Christians who drink alcohol with no condemnation from the church's leadership or philosophy.
I don't  know of anyone personally who could say that their lives have been made better by alcohol consumption...I know many lives ruined by alcohol abuse.

It seems to me that SOME of the live and let live Freebirds, yet again, cop the same attitude as the Xers they abhor....just over the opposite position.

My life has been made muich better because of my repentance of my legalistic bent toward teetotalism.  I started because of personal reasons, then became a fire-breathing fundy and for a few years tried to convince very Christian I know that it was a sin to drink, even though I knew in my heart, I was stretching the evidence, both Biblical and historical.

So, now you know someone. Although I doubt you meant "know," as in acquainted over an internet forum.

So, what is your view?

Same as Jehovah's...

"and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the Lord your God and rejoice, you and your household." Deut 14:26

So, you're for enjoying the wine and strong drink that God gives you the desire for, without crossing the line to drunkenness, whatever that is (undefined), and rejoicing in Jehovah who provides such wonderful gifts?

If wine and strong drink are a blessing from God (and the Bible says they are) then receiving that blessing and enjoying it makes my life better.

I enjoy being buzzed.  Doesn't mean I ever am.

We don't know each other, but if we did I could say I know someone who had a drinking problem but was blessed by getting a better understanding of scripture.  :)

I don't know anyone personally who could, would has said that drinking alcohol makes my life better. But, perhaps on your deathbed you could say I regret I can't knock down a few more shots before I go.....Halleulah!  8)

I imagine that you teach this to your children?

I used to drink but got seriously convicted against it as a very young Christian.
I don't miss it one bit, don't see how it would 'bless' me one bit.
No doubt, I really should be dead or in jail b/c of how I over indulged in it as a young person.

And today, bringing it into the home would be a detrimental lesson to my children and a temptation to indulge.
In fact, I bring my oldest son with me to the local mission when I preach so he can get a good idea of where many who indulge too much end up.

ummm, yes

11:00 typical Macaurthur fashion overemphasizing Slavery to Alcohol, Slaves were never considered a blessing from God...Later he claims about ration alcohol to water. Can he show where this is commanded? When we get right down to this, here is a hint Johnny Mac, its about self control, you know, its a fruit of the spirit. I can show you were it wasnt.

15:00 Is drinking necessary? No, But again, it is a blessing from God. Why would God allow if it is so "deadly".

17:00 "If you want to avoid drunkeness, is it the best choice"? in typical IFBx fashion, they assume anyone who drinks is getting drunk. My in-laws are not saved, they are wine aficionados, I have never seen them drunk. there are people, even unsaved people who have enough self control never to allow themselves to get drunk.

20:00 misquotes Leviticus and again assumes everyone is getting drunk . When will IFBx ever believe this?

22:00 Nazerites should also never cut their hair and never be around dead people, so dont go to a funeral, and dont eat jelly with your PB.

25:00 Calls John the Baptist the greatest man up to his time, because in the context of his sermon, But Jesus said to the MacArthurs Pharisees,
Matt 11:18-19 18 For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man,[f] on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.” NLT

26:00 Ok, let me get this straight, No alcohol, but, drugs and pain pills are ok??

Wow, it getting late, Ill, maybe pick this up tommorow, gotta run in the morning,  Johnny Mac *shaking head*

No, I make sure to delete all the parts of the Bible I think you won't like.

Consider breaking this habit.

I was joking.  I have failed in many areas bringing up my kids, but I freed them from the fear of alcohol by being open and honest.    I used to only drink wine or beer occasionally, and they tested both.  They're not crazy about wine (my daughter likes champagne).  They sort of like beer, but after a few sips, they've had as much as they want.  They have free access (and my permission) to the wine and beer I buy, and they never touch it.

Lately I drink bourbon or cognac or vodka almost every night before bed to get to sleep.  The kids know it, and they see me buy it (or my daughter used to - she's gone now).  They were not curious about it.  They never see me drunk, because I never get drunk.  I offered.  They tasted it.  They think it's horrible.

Good for them.    I understand the risk, but what I did was remove the sense of sin temptation of dipping into something foreign and evil.  It's just plain old beer/wine/whatever to them.  It's no big deal.

Bring up your kids however you want.  My approach seems to have worked very well for me.

With all due deference, the Bible issues warning after warning concerning the abuse of alcohol. In fact, for every verse you can find encouraging one to drink alcohol....post a few for me if you don't mind....there are verses warning about alcohol consumption.

I do not drink...never have.
I do not think drinking is a sin, but being drunk is a sin.
I do not believe drinking alcohol is encouraged or blessed by Scripture...in fact, like borrowing money, it comes with a warning!

I hope MacArthur doesn't find out you disagree with him, he could become suicidal...and if it ever becomes public knowledge, his ministry will be finished.

Sarcasm off now...... ;)

But what about the verse that says buy anything your heart desires?
You should buy a few slaves, a couple of concubines and the east coast rights to heroin distribution!

Prude!  :D

If its not a blessing, could you exegete Is. 55:1 for me then?

Thanks.  I'll keep that in mind if I'm ever tempted to abuse it.  Frankly, I have much more trouble refraining from abusing potato chips.
