i hope you are sincere... and if you are then i would sincerely like to help you...... but i think first it would be good if you forget you read that verse for a moment.. and read the entirety of 2nd chonicles first ... from the 1st chapter - up to..and through that verse you posted.... ..... coz i think then you would get a better sense of what was going on with israel... the temple... solomon... and why God was answering solomons prayer in chapter 6 in that way........ ..... ...... but if you can;t do all that... then just read the verse prior to 2 chronicles 7-14..... read verse 7-13..... what were the theoretical situations God described in verse 13... then promising solomon He would heal .. if they happened... in verse 14?....... .

there are many pieces of scripture that get cherry picked and misused.... ..many well meaning people go on and on about them creating entire doctrines on them without even knowing what those verses are about...... .... ... this verse in chronicles chapter 7 you posted is among the top 10 in my opinion for potential abuse...... you have to read the whole story..... ..
Based on what I’m reading from all of your responses, I will now only post passages from what I’m currently reading in the Bible instead of the random verse this app sends me. I’ve never read the entire Bible, nor do I believe I’ve even read an entire book of the Bible. In full transparency, I’m only on Genesis 25. My Kindle says I’m only 2% through the Bible.

yeah.... i would say ditch the app.... ..(at least where bible study is concerned)..... .... would kindle let you study any other book that way?..... a novel?........ ....can you imagine trying to figure out the story in a classic novel by reading a random sentence from the book each day?....... you wouldn;t get passng grades on any books reports...... ;) ...

Good point. I never thought about it that way.

What way did you think about it, if at all?
Originally I wanted to read the Bible all the way through just so I could say I did, but now I’m thinking this isn’t the right way to go about this.

Three common Christian ways to think about how to read the Bible:
1) Devotional--more aimed at short inspirational passages (like many Psalms and Proverbs, but not limited to them)
2) Study--requires "tools" like good reference books (dictionary, concordance, commentaries, etc)
3) Reading through the Bible in a set time(as you intend)--done with proper scope this gives you the "big picture"

Here is a good link to start proper thinking about how NOT to read the Bible...

Interesting article. My background is a combination of Catholic and Protestant. In the Catholic portion, I don’t ever remember studying the Bible at all. I only recall studying philosophy and how the saints interpreted scriptures. In the Protestant area, I only remember hearing a pastor preach from selections of the Bible. Once I went off to college, for a long time I considered myself more of an agnostic or deist. In very recent times, I’ve felt a great desire to understand God. Maybe because I’m getting older…I don’t know why.

Wow...there is a whole lot there to unpack. Thanks for sharing, seriously.

I'm not even sure where to begin, but here goes. I am sure my rugged individualism and autonomy colors my worldview and presuppositions when it comes to Catholic versus Protestant, but rather than being excessively wordy, I'll just say that that bias leads me to a Sola Scriptura (scripture alone) position which of course is a hallmark of protestantism/evangelicalism. Contrarily, I don't believe that the view that the papacy and the tradition should be elevated to the same level for Faith and practice as scripture alone. I say all that to say that you must come to some crossroads and make a choice when it comes to those things or else you will be confused as you try to move forward in understanding Christianity at a personal level, for conscience and conviction. At the end of the day, even though I am a Baptist, I believe that Luther's famous words are apropos when it comes to these matters of conscience and faith as it relates to why, what and how we should believe....

"Unless I am convicted by Scripture and plain reason (I do not accept the authority of popes and councils because they have contradicted each other), my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. So help me God. Amen.”

Appreciate your encouragement. I’m not sure what to say right now other than I’m just trying to read the Bible for the first time. I guess the academic in me believes I need to read through once as an overview, then read through a second time more rigorously and spiritually.

that;s what i did... i started reading the bible when i was 8 and read it all the way through the first time.... ..then started going back into certain parts to study specific sections.... but i have read it through many times since then too... .several of the different english versions and also through bibles in 2 of the other languages i am fluent in....(spanish and hawaiian)..... ..and like alayman suggested i also have a concordance and bible dictionaries plus also bible atlases.. ...but no commentaries.... all those things are helpful.... . but the most important thing is the bible itself.... in whatever language or version you are most comfortable with....

I would encourage you not to merely study the Bible like an academician (though it is imperative to use normal cognitive abilities in study), but approach it prayerfully and in submission to God's leading. I would also add that it would be best to be a part of a Bible believing Church who honors the Bible as God's literal word and where teachers are available to assist you.
