As is well known, in every aspect of the ministry here at FBC / HAC, qualifications for a specific job are the LAST consideration for who gets hired. "So-and so's son just graduated? What jobs are open, we have to hire him." The thinking is, anyone can learn whatever subject / job they are hired to do, on the job, at the expense of the students.

English may very well be the most important subject taught at Hyles-Anderson College.

Funny.  My Freshman English teacher was...(drum roll please).....Jack Schaap.  His first words on the first day of class were:  "I hate English".

The most impressive memory of that class was that Jack would do a vertical leap from the floor to the top of the lectern and start preaching.  It was impressive.  (No, I don't remember anything he taught on English)

I had Cindy Schaap.  It was her first year teaching.  She should not have been teaching English.

Bless her heart.

I had Mrs. Schaap her first year teaching too.  Don't remember if we were in the same class or not.  I do remember Tim Rasmussen was in my class.  Anyway, I remember being amazed on the final when we had the EXACT same sentences we had worked on in class!  Also one time she had some friends visit our class and then afterwards scolded us over our behavior as not being "in the spirit with which HAC was started"!

I don't remember if you or Tim were in that class.  I don't think.  I didn't know you that first semester, but I knew Tim.  We shared a mailbox for four years.

Teri (in NC) and Taylor G. from her church were both in the same class as I.  There was once when Mrs. S started crying after one of us respectfully asked her if she had mispoken herself in one of her lectures.  She had it wrong, but didn't realize it, I guess.  She turned and just stared at the board for what seemed a long time as she composed herself.

I have been reading a book by Dr. Lee Roberson containing his quotes and have to admit...Bro. Hyle's quotes are much more interesting. (even if they are copied from someone else.)  8)

I use to love it when Dr. Hyles would yell, "Heeeyaaahhhh!!"  Owen Ivey and I worked together at Prairie State College as janitors.  One night before work we stopped by McDonalds to grab a bite to eat.  When we walked in, the ordering area was packed with Cub Scouts and their leaders.  There was a loud "chatter" from the Cub Scouts throughout the area.  Owen said, "Watch this".  He let out a very loud, "Heeeyaaahhhh!!!"  The whole place went so quiet you could hear a pin drop.  One of the troop leaders looked at Owen and said, "How did you do that?"  Great times!
