Over the holidays I met up with an old friend I had not seen in several years. We greeted and discussed our families & work. He then made a statement that really made me think. He said “Your boy Schapp sure screwed up”, “if he had picked an 18 year old he would still be the KING OF THE IFB today”.

I think most if not all of us agree what Schapp did was very wrong but I have a few questions.

If he had an affair with and 18 yr old & had not gone to jail;

1. Would he still be pastor today?
2. Would he still have great influence within his camp today?
3. Would He still be married today?
4. Would his son be the "Heir to the Throne" today?
5. Would Hac be struggling more than it is today?

What say ye?

Who's to say he hadn't been with an 18-year old? I find it very hard to believe this 16-17 year old girtl was his first conquest. And if he had been with adult women before this girl, then obviously he continued to in his role as pastor.

If Schaap had been playing around for sometime, seems that perhaps everytime he got away with it, it gave him a false sense of confidence that he could take even more chances.

On adulterous affair, one time...not buying it.

As has been discussed over and over again already, Schaap was offered a 6-month sabbatical after his relationship/affair/whatever was discovered.  Had he reacted differently, less belligerent, I believe they would have "helped" him....in order to spare the "ministry"...and in belief that he had just made a tiny mistake and would recover to go on and do even greater things for God.  The general congregation would have never known the full extent of the situation.  There would have been a major cover up. And then the victim would have been publicly and privately destroyed for trying to bring down the great man of God.  I'm not making this stuff up....it's happened to others.

Those who came and went don't fully understand how it really was there.

I agree, the whole Eddie Lapina speech was very weird that Sunday but the whole approach was going to be the 6 month sabbatical because Schaap was sick. So surreal because anyone with a bit of discernment could tell he was lying.

On another surreal note that was the same Sunday Jeff Owens "stepped down".

See...this is the stuff that gets me.....

A woman puts on a pair of pants and she isn't even worthy enough to work in the nursery! Buuuuut.....the Associate Pastor can get up and LIE to the entire congregation....and somehow that's ok. The pastor has an obviously inappropriate whatever with a  teenager in his church and he is offered a 6-month sabbatical.  Meanwhile a girl goes to an animated Disney movie at the theater with her father and is kicked off the cheerleading squad.  The youth pastor can cheat playing games and it's funny.  But a kid cheats on a test and he gets a zero.  50 demerits for kissing your girlfriend... 0 demerits for gossip/slander/false accusation.

No wonder young adults are leaving by the droves.

I believe we have a serious heart issue in our ranks.  Rules have replaced relationship. And we are seeing the results.

I am answering these questions as if it would have been public knowledge.

1. No
2. No - though if Schaap repented some Hackers would have him preach.
3. Yes - again, if Cindy believed that he repented
4. Yes, unless he decided to leave.
5. The same

I must have missed all this when it was first discussed...I had never heard that a 6-month sabbatical was offered to Schaap when his crime was discovered. Wow! That speaks volumes of the extent the spine-less deacon board would have went to cover their Fuhrer's a**.
And here I thought the board did a noble think by firing his sorry carass.
Thanks for the info even the regurgitated kind.

I'm not sure how much information the deacons were given.

In fairness to the five men who were there when the offer was extended, it is uncertain whether they knew the EXTENT of the relationship at that time.  They knew there was kissing and inappropriate behavior, but they may or may not have known about the sex.  And surely they did not know about the trips out of state, etc.  But, his belligerent behavior when he was confronted sealed his fate when the details emerged a few days later.

Had he been even somewhat repentant, it may have all been handled differently.

I have been saying this for a long time... This CAN'T be his first one, there has to be others, if they were >18 or not.

I am sure there were 18+ years olds already.

Schaap needs to be converted.

I truly doubt his salvation.

At the time of the quote information was still coming to the fore.

The full extent of the, gasp, indiscretion was not fully known.

If we had been doing our job we would have know, though.

You know how it all comes out though.  Look at the Cosby fiasco.  Once one woman came out, others followed suit like the proverbial breaking of the dam.
If there were more from Schaap's situation, why haven't they come out?
Don't say fear b/c there are plenty of other accusers of other staff members/pastors/etc. etc. over the years.
Even if there were a 'hint' of others, SFL would be all over it like a bum on a cheap suit.
ABG would be touting it like it was the second coming of Billy Graham.

Great point.

I don't know if there were others that he had sex with.  Somehow I doubt it...because of reasons stated before.

However, there WERE others with emotional affairs and inappropriate behavior.  Some came forward and were DESTROYED.

I believe there are several people that did come forward.

They were all demonized and rebuffed.

If they were still in the church it would not be very present for them.

I believe you can find what they have written publicly, I know I have read several of them, don't remember the names.

And their names don't matter.  They have suffered enough and are moving on.

4. Would his son be the "Heir to the Throne" today? Maybe in 15 years.
5. Would Hac be struggling more than it is today? NO!
The HAC attendance has been on a multi-decade downward trend.
It has been bleeding off about 70 to 100 students a year since the 90s.
