It's been a bit slow so I figured I would try to come up with some topics to spur conversation. Topic 3:

Stolen from the HAC thread (sorta) - which preachers do you admire?

Old guys, not known by anybody, who have faithfully loved the Lord and their families, and have served Him for decades - those are the guys I like to hear best of all.

Scotty Drake, Tarheel Baptist( he did not drink the IFBX koolaid). Two that come to mind

Preachers living or that have lived in my lifetime:

My pastor
Joel Beeke
Joe Morecraft
Martyn Lloyd-Jones
David Hall (pastor of Midway PCA in Georgia)
Albert Martin

Some that I admire for preaching skills and/or content, but that I disagree with at times (or that tend to sellout on some important issues):

John Piper
John MacArthur
Chuck Swindoll
Vance Havner
J. Vernon McGee

Some that I have never heard, disagree with on some stuff, but whose character stands out:

Tom Brennan
Tarheel Baptist

Some favorites from the past:

Jonathan Edwards
Wilhemus a' Brakel
John Knox
James Durham
John Bunyan
Samuel Rutherford
Paul the Apostle
John Calvin
John  Paton

Some Famous preachers I don't care a whit for:

Rick Warren
Mark Driscoll
Rob Bell
Tim Keller
Jacks Hyles & Schaap
Perry Noble
Jessee Jackson

Tim Keller
Allistair Begg

Those are the only known names that come to mind. Several local guys I admire and like to hear.

The word "admire" is only found in a few translations. One of them being the the KJV. I believe "admire" maybe too strong of word to use in referencing "preachers". If you believe "admire" is a good choice of words..... then I would say that I admire several men/women. I don't reserve my admiration for "preachers". In fact, there are very few "preachers" that I would say I admire. One of them actually committed suicide a little over ten years ago. His name was "Buster" Seaton. "Buster" just had a way with words. He knew what was important and what wasn't. I admire men such as him. We often get caught up in things that really don't add up to much of anything. I enjoy listen to some of his old sermons.

Many men I have learned things from that I admire. Since I don't know people personally, I tend to be guarded of until I see with my own eyes how they are in real life. I don't care about reputation or what you have written, I want to know you.
That being said, I really admire my Lead Pastor Joe Thorn. I see  his weakness's and he doesn't hide from them but always exudes the grace of Christ. My best friend Mike K. Is an elder at another church who has been  there for me in many dark times in my life and beef like a brother for me.

What in the world are you talking about?

Bwahahahaha.... I was thinking the same thing.

Come on.

When anyone says anything, I think of the Scriptures. Whether you believe it or not, I try to live my life by the Scriptures. I judge everything by the Scriptures. When someone uses the word "admire" in reference to "preachers".... I try to think of the Scriptures. Maybe you don't think that way. Maybe it doesn't matter to you or Vic. It matters to me. If you've spent a large part of your life studying "words" and their "application" in the Scriptures...... you might understand.

One of the first things that came to my mind was

Jud 1:16  These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

Take it every how you want to take it. Make fun it or call me stupid. Doesn't matter. You have no power over anything and what you say means nothing.

The word "stupid" never occurs in the KJV, and only occurs three times in the New King James version.  Whether or not that makes "stupid" too weak or too strong a word, well, I can't even guess.

Neither the Liberal nor the Legalist...but the ones who rightly handle the Word of God!

Would you like to start a thread on the people you consider to be "stupid"? I'm sure you have a long list that includes just about everyone but the people you like.

Somehow I can't see "stupid" and "admire" being in the same category when it comes to "preachers". But Hey, I'm sure it makes sense in your mind.

My personal list looks something like this:

Matt Chandler
Tim Keller
N.T. Wright
C.S. Lewis

With that being said, there are dozens (if not hundreds) of people who I have learned from including people like: Francis Chan, David Platt, Mark Dever, Rob Bell, Michael Spencer, Howard Hendricks and lots and lots of old, dead guys.

So when people ask you what kind of sandwich you prefer, do you go with chicken (because it's kind of like quail a la Exodus) or do you go with roast beef (because of the fatted calf)? I'm sure you avoid pulled pork at all costs, right?

If we're including old dead guys, then Spurgeon would definitely be one of the preachers I admire most.  I still love reading his sermons.

My pastor Jim Blalock wise and humble servant

My home church pastor L.E. Traxler faithful servant

Pastor Vernon Nelms (Cotton) he is in heaven former pastor

Clarence Sexton used to have Buster speak quite often over at his church on Beaver Creek Drive. CS may have admired Buster for the same reasons you have given.  ;)
