Venezuela
A friend had been to this country on mission trips for some 20 years at the time. He challenged me to go with a team he was putting together to build a church in a remote native Indian village some 200 miles (by air) into the rainforest from the nearest town. I simply asked God to supply the needed funds & within a very short time every dime needed was raised.
A couple Mission Aviation pilots flew the 13 person team to the village, 3-4 of us at a time. I was allowed to fly the aircraft near some mountains & beautiful waterfalls on the way to the village. We then landed on a hilltop landing field that the missionary & the Indians had cleared. Those pilots have amazing skills that scared the fire out of their passengers.
We stayed in the home that the missionary to that village had built right on a river. We slept in hammocks on the 2nd story. During the mornings we built a church on a new concrete foundation that another team had laid the weeks before. Being just a few miles from Equator the heat was
crazy so we would break for lunch but first hit the river as the only way to cool off. After lunch siesta for an hour, then we would walk over the hill we landed on & upriver to just before another village & go tubing back down the river to our village. Then back to work constructing the new church building. We dug giant holes on the earth to get the kind of soil with which to mix concrete. We would also take the 2000 pound dugout canoes that the Indians had made & find sand in the bottom of creeks off the main river.
After almost 2 weeks the building was finished which was 3 times as big as the bat infested old church building. We cut down 90-100 foot trees to make benches, a pulpit & a door for the church. Side note about the benches....each family claimed a bench for their family then after the service they each took "their bench" home to their huts.
The missionary asked if I would preach the first service in the building. He had told the Indians to invite other friendly villages. Almost 90 people showed up including the village witch-doctor. I preached from John 3 with the missionary doing the interpreting. The missionary asked all the believers to leave then allowed anyone who had questions to ask them before the invitation was given. They asked questions about salvation for an hour during which some intense family decisions occurred. When the invitation appeal was given 18 people trusted Christ as Savior. Later that day that (longtime) missionary told me that we had been part of a miracle service.
This was one of the highlights of my time in the ministry.
