What event(s) opened your eyes

Just grabbed the book from my shelf and found notes I had written

on page 72 - This liberty allows crime to be pleasing to God.

How is this a misuse of scripture?  Given your context-free note, I don't even know what point he's making let alone what scripture he's using.

on page 77 - Galatians 3 is speaking of reliance of works vs. faith for salvation.  The author is using text for salvation to teach Christian living and assuming that the law has no place in the believer's life.  BUT, the Law shows us our sin that we may find grace in Christ for victory over sin.  Hence, the Law is still needed.

Your note is all your opinion.  For all I know, that isn't misuse of scripture, that's just something about which you disagree.

on page 78 - NO - they returned to a works salvation.  This is extremely different.

This is where the bookmark was, so where I quit reading.

Again, your citation doesn't give the scripture or connect it to the point he's making.

If you're going to accuse him of misusing scripture, you need to cite the scripture and point out where he's wrong (or abusing the text) in his interpretation.  I could easily do that with a lot of what Rick Warren has written, if you need an example.

Well now, there is another author with whom I greatly disagree for much of the same reason.  Although, I threw Purpose Driven Church in the trash, so I can't point to certain pages.

Grab the book, look at it and tell me what you think.  I don't have THAT much free time to retype the book.  You asked for my thoughts or review, so I put down the notes I handwrote at the time of reading.  I understand that how Galatians is intended or interpreted is often debated.  I believe Paul is writing to the church of Galatia regarding their legalist qualifications for salvation, not Christian living.  Not everyone will see eye to eye with me.

I don't believe liberty is freedom to live as I will, but freedom from a despot to serve a new Master.

He's actually pretty clearly doing both. For example:

Regarding legalist qualifications
I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. (Galatians 5:3, ESV)

...and...

Regarding Christian living
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:1-2, ESV)

...among many other examples of both within that epistle.

So this thread got way off topic but did get kind of interesting.

Thanks for the input and if anyone has anymore that pertains to the OP that would be great too.

:D

Galatians 3:1-4 (NKJ)

O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth,[a] before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? 2 This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? 4 Have you suffered so many things in vain—if indeed it was in vain?

For those that believe Galatians is only talking about salvation and not Christian living, how do you interpret verse 3? Thanks.

Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
(Acts 16:3, ESV)

When I met several people attending Dallas Theological Seminary.  One of them handed me a cassette tape by Chuck Swindoll or was it Howard Hendricks....can't remember.  Another student referred to my IFB church as legalistic.  I denied that for years and then came to realize they were right.

Chuck Swindoll has done some excellent work on grace.

Specifically, his excellent book, Grace Awakening.
But the fundies seem to really hate that....

yep.  sure do.  So much misuse of Scripture it reminded me of some fundy preachers.  I had to put it down.

I rather enjoyed Steve McVey's Grace Walk.

I personally found the book to be profitable and Biblically accurate.
I don't totally agree with Swindoll, but he's not losing sleep over that.  :)
But, I have many of his books and use them regularly!

Actually, I PM'ed BALAAM and asked him to ask me that question so I could turn this thread into a rabbit trail. I think I was quite successful and am now planning my next plot to take over the world forum.

The thief? Very little after...after all, he died a few hours later. Beforehand, I have no idea.

The eunuch? He became a God-fearer, he started studying Isaiah, he requested teaching when he realized his ignorance, he asked for clarification when he didn't understand, and he was baptized...

...and that's just what we know about in Scripture. (You'll notice that this passage explicitly mentions baptism and doesn't mention confession or faith at all. :o) As far as what happened to the eunuch before or after the particular passage in question, I have no idea, but I'm sure it didn't stop there.

Here, I thought I would help you out:

Act 8:35-38  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

And I'll repeat...

"Guess that depends on what manuscripts you're basing your translation on."

Have straws, will grasp.
What a crock!
You have not a Biblical leg to stand on with your incremental salvation eh...ah...fantasy?

He does indeed.
He also answers questions nobody on the thread is asking....usually incorrectly. But, any port in a 'my position can't be defended' storm.

Yes...I asked you a question you never answered. When were you saved?

I was chosen before the foundation of the world.

Eph 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

But I was saved when I heard the word, the Holy Spirit regenerated me and I believed.

1 Corinthians 15:11
Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

Did you miss the part where someone specifically asked me a question?
