The NEGATIVE that I have turned into positive

There is a petition circling the internet, asking for justice for the victims of Bill Wininger.

This is definitely a negative!

How do I turn it into a positive?

I was saved as an adult. Growing up, there was no hero worship in my life. Totally unfamiliar concept.

When I got saved and we became a part of the ministry of FBC Hammond, hero worship was one of the mainstays of my newfound faith. Since these were the people who knew the truth about Christ, they must know the truth about everything, I reasoned. Therefore, it is important that we idolize the greats. And there were so many greats. They were constantly pointed out to us not only from the greatest of them all, Pastor Jack Hyles, but in every area of the ministry whoever was in charge (therefore one of the greats themselves) was careful to constantly put other greats before us.

Phoster Club may have been the worst for this. Every year at Pastor's School, we were called upon to go above & beyond (like everyone else). We wives of college students, without two dimes to rub together or a decent place to live (in many cases) were given the high honor of caring for the VIP's.

We had to scrape together our monies, then carefully plan to decorate & stock the hotel rooms in which these VIP's would be staying during Pastor's School.

We were so excited to do this for these Great Men of God. We would arrange with the hotel. We would scrape together enough money for the gas to drive to downtown Chicago. We would pay for parking, we would bargain with the hotel staff to allow us to gain access into the room. Did I say "room"? It was never a room. It was always a suite, opulent and first class of course. Jaw-dropping for us impecunious college wives. But never did we question -- we accepted that this is the deserved accommodation for such esteemed Men Of God. The aura! The mystique! The "we are not worthy of your bootstraps but we serve you happily since you are so above us! just please put in a good word with God on our behalf, maybe, if you can spare a second to think of us handmaidens, which really we don't ask of you because we know there are ever so many much more important things for you to do and think and pray for!"

But I digress.

We would scrape together every cent we could find. We would make banners and signs and I'm sure it all looked pretty homespun and cheap, but we would decorate, and find out their favorite everything (by submitting questionnaires ahead of time to their secretaries) -- favorite color, favorite scent, favorite soda, favorite candy bar, any pertinent likes or dislikes, etc -- and have baskets full of their favorites placed all over the room.

It was worth it to us. It was thought of as an incredible honor that we were chosen to do this. We were spoiling the Man of God!

I remember every encounter I ever had with one of the greats. It ALWAYS disappointed me that they really didn't seem all that great.

And what is positive? I can look back on all of this, and embarrassed as I am that I fell into the trap, I am relieved I got out. I can never, ever be gaga about someone who is supposedly great again. (One of which was Bill Wininger) And that is as it should be.

Thank you for that post.  As difficult as it is for you to look back on that time, I believe you will be rewarded greatly in Heaven for your sacrifice.  As I read your post it seems like at the time you were doing it out of kindness with a servant's heart.  That's a positive!

No, the REAL positive is that because of his past, he got praised by RAIDER!!!! :D

Someway, somehow, I got out of that hero worship aspect of HAC/FBCH.  I saw it happening, but never really participated much myself.  I did not stand on the pews in unladylike fashion and whoop and holler.  Yes, I will stand and clap;  I will give a standing ovation if I feel it is deserved (somewhat like during political speeches).

I am so much more for honoring the unknown servants who just keep serving.  They may not have a church with a large attendance, but they keep serving.  They may not be dynamic speakers or great, entertaining storytellers, but they just keep serving.  They are not invited to speak in college chapel, but they just keep serving.

I'll stand and give a round of heartfelt applause for those type people anytime.  I don't really even care to hear most "big names" talk - anywhere - pulpit, foyer, or Golden Corral.

RAIDER, thank you for YOUR comment. At the time, I really did mean it, with all of my heart, from a servant's heart. I forgive myself my innocent naiveté, for it was indeed sincere.

The value of this will not be recognized for many years.  :)

How soon you forget the spectacle you made of yourself every time I walked past your pew.  "RAIDER!  RAIDER!! Would you please sign my Bible?" you shouted as you leaped onto a pew while flinging your Bible over your head.

I believe we can all say that the person we are today has been formed from a lifetime of teaching and experiences.  What NEGATIVE things did you learn or experience at HAC that you have turned into something positive in your life?  Here is your chance.  NEGATIVES that you have turned into positives.
I checked in as an assistant pastor & took over most everything but the pulpit ministry of the main services. The pastor was a HACker. He acted like he was trying to doing his best Jackie-boy impersonation with the number of hours & schedule. I had no choice.....1st to arrive in the morning.....I'd go home at sundown eat & head back to the office until very late 7 days. Within 7 months I had a physical breakdown, couldn't get out of bed, was dragged to a doctor who asked me what I did for a living. When I told him he said, "If you don't change your schedule & slow down & rest you will die of a heart attack before you are 35.

We had heard the talk of JH...."I never take a day off!"

Well, I stayed in bed & rested for about 9 days, went back to work & told the HACker pastor what the Doctor said. We found JH's schedule in the book, Let's build an Evangelistic Church. We cut back to that schedule & got as much done in less time. My health came back.

I also decide to put my family 1st before ministry, THAT has paid off 100 fold.

We would probably be surprised at how many Hackers tried to keep the JH schedule.  JH was a unique individual, and it is amazing the schedule that he kept for so many years.  In the end I'm sure it had taken its toll on his health.

Negative-graduating with a non-accredited degree.

Positive-Making it possible for my children to get great educations where their degree is actually worth something, and makes it possible for them to get a good job!

Never bothered me though.
Pastoral Theology is Pastoral Theology.  Even if it was accredited, what kind of job would it get me?
Teaching on the other hand would be different.

My girls did not want to be a Christian School teacher or a secretary or a missionary, so HAC or those of like kind, where not a choice. My youngest daughter enjoys mission trips with our church twice a year, which is financially possible because of her job.  My children have been in church since birth. For the past 12 years we have been under a wonderful Pastor, so they did not need any kind of Bible College. Although three of them have gone to a Christian college.

One of the best friends I have pastors the Knoxville Baptist Temple and he never went to college.
Great church, one of the best preachers you'll ever hear!

I do not know if he really kept that schedule or not.  What I do know is that my experience tells me that the HACkers I have encountered do their best to PORTRAY this type schedule but really do not.

I would really hate to have to try and fabricate that kind of life.
You're always on guard to protect the fallacy of it.

It is doubtful that JH actually "worked" that schedule. I do believe he stayed away from home that amount of hours.

How do you know this? I mean any man that can preach over 55,000 sermons in his career can surely do anything. ;)

I have learned in a lot of HAC relationships that loyalty to a man was more important than living by obedience to the Scriptures.

I am a grad. I went to college to learn more about studying the Scriptures, communicating it to others so that I could live all out for Jesus & to learn how to motivate others to do so. I did not go to follow a man or a movement. Some of that rubs off on you while there & if you follow that up by working for a HACker.

I have endeavored to think for myself in making decisions based on Scripture.
I have endeavored to be a friend to my friends but not based on their loyalty JH or not.
I have endeavored to point others to God through the teachings of the Scriptures & to be loyal only to HIM.
