Taking yourself too seriously

Jack Hyles!  I still remember him saying that hac was the only hope for America. That all of America had her eyes on fbch. If fbch went down, America was going down. etc etc

Have you noticed the condition of America lately?  He may have been correct. ;)

I will not name names. Reason being, this guy is currently on staff at FBC/HAC and I haven't talked to him since 1988, so I will assume he is different now than he was at the time.

We were in "B" Sunday School where I was "the rover" who made sure all the SS teachers showed up, all teachers had enough workers in the classrooms, the PA systems were set up for the "B" church service, handle any issues, etc. Basically, I was Eddie's right-hand man for the "B" teen services.

During an opening assembly, a kid was cutting up and our eager Brother HACker told the kid to meet him in the bathroom. I came in a minute or two later and he had the kid pinned against the wall, screaming at him for cutting up in assembly. I told Brother HACker I would handle it. He let the kid go and I turned to Brother HACker in front of the kid and pinned him against the wall and screamed at him never to touch another kid again. Brother HACker stomped off in a huff.

The kid actually apologized to me for his behavior and thanked me for standing up for him. He never caused any more problems thereafter.

Later in the week, I got a call in to see Casteel. Brother HACker was one of Casteel's pets, so of course he tattled on me. I explained to Casteel what he was doing and he told me I was never to put a hand on a bus worker ever again, and I was wrong to do it in front of the bus kids. I just walked out of his office mid-conversation. I never heard another word from anyone, never got demerits, nothing.

William P. Grady

Wow, I guess it depends on your point-of-view.  I always found him a loose cannon, willing to chase a rabbit trail with just a little prodding.  The problem with that is then you don't know his quiz answers because he never covered the material.

Unless he's changed, and mellowed (matured) with age, he still is a loose cannon.  Just watch his video from Crown College.

How old is Grady's Crown College video?

The church secretaries when speaking in Church Ed.

Example: "We don't have a Jack here at FBC, we have a Dr. H.........."

lol??name names of these secretaries!

Smelling Coffee writes "I just walked out of his office mid-conversation. I never heard another word from anyone, never got demerits, nothing."

They didn't have a lot of courage. Vineyard chewed out a student for objecting to the sins of his gangsters. Later, Jim called him in for a second chewing out. The student refused to attend, and he got away with it.

Once a week, I had to report to the demerit office to answer another false accusation from Jim. Dr. Fair counseled me about it, and I dragged him into the office with me, explained that this was revenge for my objecting to the sins of Vineyard's gangsters, and that I wouldn't be showing up any more. Never heard anything about it.

Ray Y once told me if I dropped out of the bus ministry (his division) God would never use me.

I'm glad I did not listen to that stuff. And I'm also glad that the leaders of the other ministries that I was involved in while trying to get a well-rounded ministry education did not say the same thing .

With my mom being on staff, I think nepotism may have helped me avoid certain confrontations. ;)

True story:

A student was paid to be assistant to some of the women staff members. She soon began shouting at students, insulting them, ordering them around, etc.

She ran out one day, demanding that students volunteer to help. I was one of the volunteers, and she kept insulting and yelling at us to work faster. To my surprise, I suddenly snapped "She man!" I was as surprised and horrified as anyone else. Bristling with authority, she yelled repeatedly "Who said that?" We stared at each other in confusion, and nobody informed on me.

Once again, I volunteered--we had to move a piano down a narrow flight of stairs. As we struggled with the difficult load, she taunted us, deriding our manhood, calling us weaklings, etc. Later, I complained to a staff member, got called into Dr. Evans' office, and explained it to him.

Years later, she ran an ad in Robert Sumner's newspaper, including her photograph. She was running a deprogramming deal for HAC grads, for a fee. The ad explained that she was a former staff member at HAC.

If you had it to do over again, knowing what you know now, would you still attend Hyles Anderson?

Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda & it's too late now.............but NO. I would have retired from the USMC.

When I first entered to bus ministry FBCH still operated (if you want to call it that) their own bus barn, fix-em-up so-called mechanics. I drove a bus starting in the the summer. When the below freezing winter hit I got to the bus barn earlier so as to warm up the bus for the workers. I found out that our bus did not have a working heater that Sunday. I reported it to division leader. He found the bus captain when he showed up & told him to run the bus anyway.

He loyally told me the same & that he & his wife had brought blankets for the kids to use just in case. Our bus route was in Joliet, Illinois some 35 miles away. So....................I drove the bus the 3-4 miles from the barn to the church building & stop right out front. Looked at the bus captain & said, "I would not want my kids to ride a SS bus with no heat & I will NOT be part of doing so with the children of others." I got up, walked down the stairs & got off the bus & went to church with my family.

The next Sunday & the rest of the winter our bus had all the heaters in tip top working order.

Just think about all of the great future sermon illustrations you could have had.  :)

I was thinking sorta the same thing.  How wonderful that bus captain met a real man that day.  Of course that BC is not in ministry as he is probably frozen somewhere in north Chicago.

While he did have the gift of teaching, he seemed to think quite a bit of himself (and I'm speaking of his behavior at HAC).

Not sure that he had the gift of teaching. His material was stolen and the competition was less than adequate. The one eye man is king in the land of the blind.

All material is stolen.  There is nothing new under the sun.  If Joe had a gift, it was that he was entertaining and kept your attention.

Long Gone and Twisted are both making valid points here.

Joe was by far the best teacher when I was there, and none of the others were close. A major reason was that Joe taught material that no one else was teaching. It appears now to have been someone else's material, but that doesn't change the fact that we learned more from him than from the others.

Much of the Bible teaching consisted of new reasons to believe the same things. Spiritual gifts, getting prayers answered, etc., were seldom mentioned.

While he used the same type of format as Wiersbe, I believe the notes were different.  I'm not sure you can call that "stolen".
