When Dr. Hyles passed away everyone knew the new pastor would be Jack Schaap or Jeff Owens.  We see what has happened in both of their ministries.  I believe most of us agree that neither one was a good choice.

With that being said, who would have been a good choice to follow Jack Hyles?  We are not looking for you to rattle on with your opinions and no choices.  We are looking for a name and a reason why it would have worked.

If I had a million dollars....

My brother affirms to this day, that one year at Pastors' School in the 80s, Dr. Hyles referred to Larry Bullard as the next pastor of First Baptist Church.    There was a time I would have thought he might be "on the list".

Larry Bullard???  He couldn't run an ice cream shop!  OMG!  In fact, what's he up to now?  His wife was in bad health at the time they were here.  No way he would choose Larry!

Yes, this is true.

Why was it okay in anyone's mind for Bro Hyles to choose his successor. As Independent Baptists doesn't that go against what we believe in? Of course if a business man is looking for a successor then it makes more sense, after all, "God's business is the greatest business"

FBCH was far more Catholic in practice than many would care to acknowledge in public.

As a former catholic, I tend to agree with what you said except for one word, "was".

I am working on a post comparing FBCH to the Catholic Church. I would like to think we are becoming less Catholic, but maybe not.

I think I will send Tom Neal an e-mail and ask him who would have been a good fit! :o :o :o :o

I don't think Wilkerson is like that. From my perspective he is not connecting well with the average person in the pew. I couldn't tell you why he isn't tho. The cronies around him? They are definitely the cardinals. They would never use those terms but compare the mindset and you will see it.

That......him......con.....trary to a good choice.

Outside of the usual names, I remember Jack Trieber came up a few times. He would have been 51 or 52 at the time. Not sure if he would have been a good fit or not. I think he was pretty happy where he was at the time.

I believe there were several things that made this a very difficult position to fill:

* The church was so large.  It's not like you could find a group of candidates who were currently pastoring a church near that size.

* Reguardless of what you think of Jack Hyles, the new pastor would be following a "legend" in the IFB world.

* If someone was chosen from inside FBCH they would have the advantage of knowing the ministries, the area, etc.  Unfortunately, there was not anyone inside FBCH that was qualified to handle the situation.

* If someone was chosen outside of FBCH they would have a tremendious learning curve.  Can you imagine showing up in Hammond for your first day as pastor.  Where would you start?
