So close your eyes and tell me.......

I see a little girl, around five years old, sitting up in the corner section of the balcony.  She is with an older man, possibly her grandfather.  I see that she is well-behaved and listens to everything.  I see that her hair is twisted and tangled, and that probably there was no mother to brush and comb it for her to get ready for church.  Her dress is worn but clean.

I see the older man with her.  He is dressed in just a plain shirt and pants.  I've not seen these two here before, but they both listen to the message.

I see that they get up to leave before the end.  I follow them and stop them on the first landing and tell the man how impressed I was at how well she behaved.  I knelt down to talk to her and gave her a dollar and asked the man if he would allow her to buy some ice cream.

Then I returned to my seat and wept, thankful there was an old-fashioned church down on the corner, where that little girl could come and learn about Jesus.

Ah...I see my young grandson here.  Yes, his father (my son) knows Jesus, but he doesn't attend church.  I'm not sure I'll live long enough to be able to bring my grandson to church, but if I do, I pray someone will give him a dollar for ice cream...because I'll make sure he gets that that ice cream, even though nowadays, even McDonald's ice cream costs more than $1...

Thank you, IFB X-Files, for posting this!

I see a bus stop in front of our house, to pick us up.
Dad has to work every other Sunday, but now he is on Days, and he has our car.
I see Dr.Jorgenson there, waiting on the bus...he's just a bus Captain on Sunday, in North Hammond.

I see the bus stop at my friend's houses, as one by one they trust Christ and come to get baptized.

I see corny promotions, that never once appealed to me, cuz I was already saved.

In an inner city, like some of us grew up, thank God for that ride to church.

Earnestly Contend

Thank you for sharing.  While much of what we read on the HAC FFF is negative, there are a multitude of stories like yours that cold be told.

I think this kinda stuff happens often in other churches as well.

I'm sure it does.  Thanks for the negative spin.

I wasn't trying to be, I was just sharing.

Thank God for the Gospel. That little girl doesn't have to come that "old-fashioned church" to receive. She can just open her Bible and read the sermons ever written.

I see Vick N standing on his tip-toes looking for those walking the aisle.

This, I remember, but had forgotten.  Thanks for jarring this memory loose.

I also remember Vic N coming into the old baptistery still putting on his sport coat over his waders.  This baptistery had no curtain and somehow Hyles, Colsten and Nishchick could get completely ready from the platform to the water in one congregational song with two stanzas, occasionally three verses.  It's weird what small detail your brain will remember 40-45 years later.

amazing that woke up my memory too!

I can see VN standing on his tip-toes leading singing in Dr. Hyles' SS class.  I also see and hear him praising Dr. Hyles.

Remember how Bro. Hyles would call out the names of the folks coming forward to announce their decision. Staff members would be at the ready to point them out to Bro. Hyles. They would usually raise their hands to get his attention. I See One time, I think it was Bro. Moffitt through his arm at a back angle or something and accidentally slapped Bro. Nischick in the face.

That was something to see during your first visit to FBCH.
