That’s a great use for a road that’s not considered car worthy. On the other hand, it would be great if the they returned it to nature and maybe make it for off road bikes.
i only gave brief details about that old road coz i am consantly accused here of writing posts that are too long.... .but most parts of that former highway have not been maintained by the state since the 1960s.... only the lower sections that serve private landowners are - and those landowners pay the state to do the roadwork....the rest is left to return to the jungle but access to it is limited...

and many parts of the old road spcifically the old bridges and sections that ran along the cliffsides have more than simply returned to nature... they collapsed and fallen in landslides down to the jungle below.... ..those are places where we have to carry bicycles on narrow and often unstable cliffside trails between the surviving road beds..... i will try to post more pictures of it when i have time....

btw... i;m not sure if you meant motorcycles or bicycles when you mentioned off road bikes.... but any kind of motorcycle or motorized transportation device is stricly banned on abandoned unmaintained sections of old roads like that... unless they are on private property... and then they are usually marked as "kapu"... meaning they are off limits to everybody without permission of the landowners.... we have permission to travel all sections of it.. .. but not with motorcycles or motorvehicles... .. not even horses.... ... the jeep trails i mentioned in previous threads that we use to access the areas we hunt in are also kapu roads.. .. we have to have permission from landowners and in some cases the military to travel on them or to even walk on some of them.....

Funny thing…I was actually referring to what a lot of people call “mountain bikes” (as in no motor). A lot of folks I grew up with call mountain bikes “dirt bikes” or “off road bikes.” I’m guessing because we have no mountains and we’d always ride them on dirt trails. Yeah, it gets a little confusing when making the distinction between a dirt bike with a motor and one you pedal. I guess it’s a local thing.

we have 2 major routes we use for our long bike rides... .. this particular section of old and ruined road is part of our shorter 40 miles ride and is the reason we use mountain bikes for it... . both rides start in town then go around the east end of the island but this one cuts off in kailua and heads up over the pali pass.... (the other ride continues on through kaaawa - kahuku and around the north shore... coming back through the center of the island through wahiawa and pearl city ...)

here is a map of the 40 mile ride....

40milebikerideoahu.png

and this is my mountain bike i use for it... stripped down before i added accessories... .. i have had this a long time and took a community college course on bicycle repair so i would be able to keep it in top shape.... .

wow... . the creepy pervert - woke animal activist - and hyper fundy legalist .... all wrapped together in the same skin..... ..jack would be proud......
That type of bullfighting is illegal in the U.S. Has been for a long time.

What's the reason for the banderilleros?

by contrast this is the longer 114 mile ride... .. it has been a long time since i have completed it. .... in our group
of bicycling friends are several triathletes.... and they usually take off and leave the rest of us behind somewhere
around kahaluu... .then the rest of us end up making back to town several hours behind them - unless we stop in
halaiewa and take a bus the rest of the way home.... all busses here in hawaii have bus racks and it make it pretty
convenient... . plus the busses are also air conditioned too.... so that;s nice.... yeah i know it;s cheating... but that

stil gives us at least a 70 miles ride before we jump on the bus....

roundtheislandride.png

and this is my road bike... . i got it about 3 years after i got the other one... i will probably replace
both of them if i continue on these long rides.... . but right now my mountain bike is my primary
means of transportation in town... . has been since the day i got it.... ..

Very cool. I’m planning a trip to Hawaii one day…might be a few years, but I’d like to do something like this when I’m there. I’m assuming tourists can rent an off road bike. Sorry, just can’t bring myself to say “mountain bike.”

Question: on this mountain bike, do you call the tires “dirt tires” or something else? We always said “dirt tires” or “street tires” for the bikes you ride on the paved roads.

all forms of bull fighting intended to end in the death of the bull are banned... we watch through satellite tv channels we suscrbe to.....

the banderilla is designed to paralyze the muscles on the back of the bulls neck.. which then forces him to keep his head down.... .. thus making him less dangerous as the fight progresses... ...when the bull is played out she dismounts and finishes him off on foot with a sword thrust through the back of the neck into the heart... .... same as matador style bull fighting she waits for him to charge then uses his own momentum to drive the sword....... ...... however - it doesn;t always go that way or prgress to that point... . quite a few matadors and rejoneadors have been killed or critically injured when the bull got the upper hand.. .( or... horn... hoof... etc..). on them..... .... ..i saw it happen to one of my favorite matadoras who fights on foot.... rocio morelli... . she was gored but survived it and even managed to run away from the bull on her own... . but it was a scary moment... ... she still fights bulls to this day... ...

rocio morelli.....

i;ve always called them mudders... . as in mud tires... . or just by the name brand.. .. right now i have maxxis minions on my mountain bike... .not the tires it came with....all mountain bike tires wear out pretty fast when used on both pavement and dirt trails.. .. but there is no way to get around riding on pavement unless you can transport the bike to wear you are going to ride in a truck or bus... ..... i have always used my mountain bike to ride all over town so i go through a lot of tires... .. also go through a lot of brake pads... ..

i have no problem calling my bike a mountain bike... coz when i go on these 40 mile rides it really ends up being on a mountain.... but in truth it spends most of its time on city streets... ...

every saturday and sunday motorcyle clubs on the island do that very thing.... ... enmasse.... ..a few times on the north shore some of them have slowed down to the same speed we were riding at and started talking to us... ..the triathletes up ahead of us don;t really lke that but i never minded it... . ..it can actually help me keep going during times i am becoming fatigued... . plus one way to be sure you are not pushing yourself too hard during heavy exercise is when you can carry on a conversation at the same time.... but i still never rode past the starbucks we always stop at.. even with the extra inspiration and challnge of keeping up with a motorcycle.. .but they have stopped with us a few times to take a break while we downed frapuccinos ..... they said they don;t see us out there very often while they are out there every saturday and sunday.....

it;s been a while since we have done it but i use to go riding with my sister on her ducati monster at least once a week.. ... now days it;s about once every 3 months at best... the last ride she took me on was before thanksgiving last year.... ....we sometimes follow the same route around the island but she also likes going up over roundtop and into the upper palisades roads... way beyond my endurance level on a bicycle... ... traversing the pali pass is about my limit... ... but riding with her is awesome coz she;s not out for relaxation.. . but more for stress relief.. .. so it can be a highspeed ride no matter which road we are on.....

That’s funny. I’ve only heard that name for the mud truck tires. Usually they just call them “muds.”
when it has been raining and we end up riding through muddy ground they earn that nickname... .one of the old brands of tires i had in the past us to collect the mud and become totally caked with it and unmanageable... . but these are made to allow most of the mud to fall away when riding...... but we still have to stop and wash them down sometimes . .... if it;s raining... and especially heavy rain.. we don;t have that problem... .. the mud doesn;t stick to the tire then and it gets me through messes i would never be able to get through with the narrow road tires on my other bike... . ....and those aren;t as safe on wet streets either as the wider maxxis mud tires..... ....

That must be called a "monster" because of its power to weight ratio. When I was first learning to ride the Goldwing, I was calling it a monster. It comes in at just under 1,000 lbs with an 1832 cc six cylinder boxer engine. If it was the same weight as the Ducati, I'd probably get myself in a world of hurt.

....

Um... Yeah. I just looked up specs on a 2021 Ducati Monster vs my 2003 Goldwing GL 1800...

The Ducati sports a 937cc V Twin that develops 111 HP and 93 Nm of torque. And has a dry weight of 366 lbs! (Less than 40 lbs heavier than my first bike, a Yamaha 250 Virago)😱🤯

The Goldwing develops 118 HP with 167 Nm of torque at nearly three times the weight.

Yes, you treated us to a similar vantage point of this one earlier.

Correction, all forms that result in pain and suffering. Okay, the darts. They don't paralyze the animal. They're painful and force the bull to lower its head.

Are you saying these chicks don't employ banderilleros?

And what makes the darts more humane?

are you talking about using banderilleros to place the banderillas?... (barbed darts).... before the matador takes to the arena?... . yes.... some of them do.. rocio morelli relys on them... . but lea vicens who fight bulls from horseback, places the banderillas herself.. .. but what;s the problem?....... i didn;t say anything about any part of bullfighting being humane.... nor did i imply that it should be........ no part of bullfighting bothers me..... i even use to dream about being a matadora myself once.....

but just so we know we are both talking about the same things here.... the reason for the banderillas is not supposed to make anything easier on the bull.... it;s suppose to make it safer for the matador and make the bull easier to kill.....but it doesn;t always work out that way.... sometimes the bullfighter dies instead of the bull..... . ..

but again i ask... what;s the problem?... ... .... i find it ironic that someone as crass and verbally abusive towards women as you are suddenly has compassion for a beast that would kill you upon sight just because you were there.....

there is a reason they use bulls in these fights originally devised to train cavalry - and not any other animal... other animals run away from people... bulls do not...... they instictively want to kill everything that is not a cow and part of their herd/harem......

and are you related to that idiot mr hall that use to post here a few years ago?........ he use to have apoplectic fits any time i posted something about pig hunting with a longbow.... .he said it was inhumane and referred to the wild boar as a "poor hapless pig".... .. we were calling him shemp for a while coz he acted like such a buffoon.....

it;s the fastest thing i have ever been on.... except for maybe a jetliner... but you don;t feel the wind blowing past you on a jet.... ...i have to hang on for dear life when i;m riding with her and she accelerates... . but she;s a good rider... i have never felt like i was in danger.... .... this type of motorcycle - a ducati monster - is the only kind she has ever owned... .and she has had several of them over the years - always yellow....... all through college and for a long time until she got her phd and was promoted on her job a ducati monster was her only means of transportation.......

in fact - she met her husband because of her motorcycle... .. she was in college at the university here in hawaii and when she went out to the parking lot to go home - she saw this strange guy in a navy uniform admiring her motorcycle.... as it turned out he had a ducati just like it parked right next to hers.... his was black... he was taking classes at the college too.... ....so they struck up a conversation based on mutual admiration of each others ducati monsters... . and the rest is history.... .

Funny (but true) story. Years ago I walked out of a local Walmart and hopped in what I thought was my Jeep. It turned out that someone had the same identical Jeep as mine and was parked right beside me. I only realized it wasn’t mine when I went to start the Jeep and noticed it wasn’t a stick shift. I completely freaked out and jumped out as fast as I could hoping the owner wasn’t walking out of the store. 😳

I'm speaking of the helpers that also goad and otherwise inflict pain to further enrage the animal.

.. .. but what;s the problem?.......
Cruelty for sport.

i didn;t say anything about any part of bullfighting being humane.... nor did i imply that it should be........ no part of bullfighting bothers me
It probably should.

..... i even use to dream about being a matadora myself once.....
If you want to be fit and show off your bod and the grace and agility thereof before a crowd, there's dance and gymnastics. If you want to fight, there's wrestling and martial arts. If you want to fight a bull, there's American style bull fighting. There's a host of arts, the skill and spectacle of which would rival any of that of a matadora. And they don't require the senseless torment of a dumb animal.

but just so we know we are both talking about the same things here.... the reason for the banderillas is not supposed to make anything easier on the bull.... it;s suppose to make it safer for the matador and make the bull easier to kill.....but it doesn;t always work out that way.... sometimes the bullfighter dies instead of the bull..... . ..

but again i ask... what;s the problem?... ... ....
Animal cruelty is the problem. Man's dominion over the beasts isn't a license for cruelty. A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel. - Proverbs 12:10

i find it ironic that someone as crass and verbally abusive towards women as you are suddenly has compassion for a beast that would kill you upon sight just because you were there.....
First, holding wanton, silly women laden with sins accountable is not abuse. Second not everyone that challenges one of your opinions is the spawn of the devil, or is calling YOU a wanton, silly woman laden with sins. Third, I have no feelings for the bulls. I simply said animal cruelty is unattractive.

there is a reason they use bulls in these fights originally devised to train cavalry - and not any other animal... other animals run away from people... bulls do not...... they instictively want to kill everything that is not a cow and part of their herd/harem......
Training cavalry is one thing. Sport is another.

There was a James R. Hall who used to be my pastor before the Internet was born. He wasn't IFB, but other than that I know of no one named Hall. And judging by the disproportionate amount of vitriol you volley toward anyone who might disagree with you without their first offering the proper prostrations makes me think you aren't being fair to your Mr. Hall.
