President Jimmy Carter - RIP

Meanwhile, they sang that atheistic anthem, "Imagine." I've heard this at so many ostensibly "Christian" services iby now, I wonder if they're not just rubbing our noses in it.
my mom was an elvis presley fan.... so i didn;t hear that song until i was a teenager and had been here in hawaii for several years. .....i thought it was written by a buddhist at first until someone told me it was a beatle song...😦 .. ... but then i guess it still could have been written by a buddhist coz who knows what kinds of beliefs -- if any... john lennon had.... .

How many of you sang this in your head?! Time to 'fess up!!
i have to admit i did not watch the funeral... ... but i did see the news and saw that michelle obama was missing from the pews of presidential dignitaries.... . i wonder what that was about?.... ...i don;t buy the claim she is on vacation and had a "scheduling" conflict...... she lives here!.... .what is going on that somebody here in the islands would not reschedule if she asked them to?....

I never knew it was considered the anthem for atheists. That’s unfortunate because it’s a beautiful song.
as an instrumental it would be a pretty melody.... but the lyrics are definitely atheist... ... buddhists here love it coz it lines up with many things they believe..... ...my dad said when he was young his southern baptist pastor called it a prelude to the antichrist... ..

Well, apparently it was his favorite secular song. It is quite a beautiful song, IMO.

well i believe it;s very appropriate to play a persons favorite music at their funeral.
.. it;s part of paying respects.. .. and regardless of what others thought about them
in life that;s one time a person should always be honored....

did you know that in history.... today... january 9th ...was also the day of admiral lord
nelsons funeral?...... this song below from handel was played as nelsons funeral march
when his casket was carried into st pauls cathedral at whitehall.... i doubt this was
nelsons favorite song... . . but his casket was actually modelled after the hull of the
hms victory which nelson commanded the british fleet from and also died on the deck of..

Oh, it' s a superb piece of music. An earworm. I've been humming it in my head all night.

Just goes to show you can make some great art with lousy subject matter.

The Beatles had their Eastern religion phase--they got into Transcendental Meditation, but I think they were pretty disillusioned with it after a whiles, except for George Harrison.

I believe Lennon was an atheist, or at least an agnostic. His song "God" is about all the things he didn't believe in: it came down to just "Yoko and me, that's reality." The lyrics to "Imagine" sound communistic--"imagine no possessions," to say nothing of the aforementioned anti- religion lyrics --but he wasn't particularly Communist, either. Nor was he against religion, per se, more opposed to sectarianism.

Still, while the music is superb, the lyrics are vapid, offering suggestions that provide no real solutions.

Beautiful song…and bonus, you got me relearning some colonial American history this morning! (The colonial era is my favorite chapter in American history.)

Well, if anyone has three hours and twenty-two minutes to burn today, here’s the funeral from the Washington Cathedral in its entirety:

"Imagine" - no heaven, no hell, no religion, no possessions - definitely sounds atheistic and Communistic to me. Please don't play that at my funeral.

I am afraid John Lennon was not my favorite Beatle. He wrote the song "Run For Your Life" which appears to justify murder of one's girlfriend. I don't expect perfect rectitude from rock stars, but some of Lennon's work was really way out of line.

Well, I'd rather see you dead, little girl
Than to be with another man
You'd better keep your head, little girl
Or I won't know where I am

Let this be a sermon
I mean everything I've said
Baby, I'm determined
And I'd rather see you dead

You'd better run for your life if you can, little girl
Hide your head in the sand, little girl
Catch you with another man
That's the end, little girl

Bush did not even talk to Trump, acknowledge him or shake his hand.

a few years ago that kind of snub would have had news commentators talking about how strange, and even how wrong such a breach of common courtesy was... .... but instead they are talking about how strange and how wrong it was for obama and trump to be talking.... and even ... *gasp*..... getting along....😲

"Carter spoke of the change in his understanding of moral issues like abortion and homosexuality and told me, “I know what I’ve just explained to you might be somewhat controversial, but it’s the way I feel.” "

So, according to Carter, his feelings trumps the Word of God. No wonder Imagine was played at his funeral.

I don’t think Carter ever believed in abortion, but he respected the SC stance on this issue back then. The gay marriage issue he did shift his stance on later in life. Here’s an in depth analysis of his stance: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna93119
