Do you think there should be a probationary period before baptism?

Do you advocate immediate (as soon as realistically possible) baptism after confession of Christ/regeneration, or do you favor a probationary period?

What reasons do you have for your position?

Acts 8:35-39  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on
                    his way rejoicing.

This passage is a biblical model of salvation and baptism.  Baptism should follow salvation, but there is not a prescribed amount of time that MUST pass between the two.

In the book of Acts they baptized folks the same day they were saved. I'll stick with the biblical way, baptize as soon as possible.

40And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

41Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

My church has baptism services more or less regularly, and holds a baptism class prior to the baptism service, to properly instruct candidates on what baptism signifies.  If someone expressed an urgent desire to be baptized (e.g. a terminal illness), that would be great - on what grounds could I object? - but I don't consider it an unreasonable delay to wait a few weeks and ensure that a new Christian is properly catechized first.

I'm perfectly fine with right away, as per Acts practice. I can see making them wait for some head knowledge in order to join a particular church... but they've already become Christians and baptism is part of that, not part of joining a church.

A lot of churches have new convert classes. Before or after the baptism really doesn't matter as long as they understand the symbolism and start getting grounded right away.

So in other words: 1-2-3, pray after me, dunk em in the cree...........................k

Jack Hyles would be proud  :)  :)

Phillip I know, but who is this Jack Hyles guy? He's not in my Bible, nor in the traditions of my church.  :P

It all depends on the person and the situation.  For example in some areas they have to wait until the ice melts in the lake.  In some cultures like Catholicism there needs to be instruction to make sure the person is saved and understands.  Some churches Baptize too many people so they can brag and end up with a lot of so called Christians who are not truly saved and have terrible testimonies.  If you understand the local church, water baptism makes a person a member as spirit baptism puts them into Christ.  You want to be careful who becomes a member of your church as they can bring in Rock n'Roll and vote to remove a good pastor because he preaches agains their sin.

I want people who'll bring in rock 'n' roll! But I don't want to remove good pastors. Hmm, tough choice!  :P

Sounds good , too bad it isn't biblical.

Why in the world would you want Rock n'Roll?

And why would you warn me not to be ignorant? What do you perceive that I am ignorant of?  Surely not the Bible.  You don't really think that the Bible includes some verse that clearly condemns rock and roll music?

Ok, then, let's take the only other statement that you could even possibly think that you can defend from the Bible.

Show me where you can prove that water baptism makes a person a member of a church.

Like I said, don't be an idiot.
