Do you still read/reference Dr. Hyles' books?

OK, be honest.  In the past year have you read any of Dr. Hyles' books?  I'm not talking about just reading them from cover-to-cover.  I'm also talking about looking something up to be used in teaching or preaching.

I have commented else where.

Don't want to be redundant.

I sent all mine to a missionary who was collecting books for national pastors to read & sending them to Africa.

Maybe that's why Africa is now so messed up.

Sure, when I want to quote a theologically-shallow, lying, narcissistic, manipulative cult leader.

I actually still have all of them in my library.  I haven't looked at any of them in the past year.

It would be interesting to see how well worn those books are from the libraries of HACker like Goddard, Gomez, Grimaldi & some others who can't preach without quoting JH.

You guys can tar and feather me, but there are actually some good Biblically sound thought and ideas in some of the books.  The books on Prayer and The Holy Spirit have a lot of good information.  On the other hand, you do have to watch out for the chapters that depart from the Scriptures.

I agree completely there is a lot of good stuff, except I don't want to wade through all the junk to find a few good nuggets.

You and I are probably on the same page, but I actually believe that in most of his books there is more good information than junk.  The junk jumps out at you pretty quickly.

Raider, you are just as entitled to your opinion as anyone else. I wouldn't tar and feather you for that. We should allow each other our independence right?

As for your question,... I have, I believe, almost all of his books. They are buried in my closet. I can't bring myself to open them again as of yet. The events of the last few years and talks with old time deacons have left me thinking all was not as above board as I once believed. As I had once vehemently defended. To be perfectly transparent I get somewhat creeped out on FB when someone that has a page posts quotes of Bro Hyles. I just think we should focus more on the quoting the Bible than quoting Bro Hyles these days.

Agreed. The hero worship ended for me. There really only ever was one Hero, anyway.

I reference things I remember about him or his messages more than I reference his books.  Probably the one chapter of any of his books I reference most often is "The Preacher and Language" in Teaching on Preaching.

I'm a nugget learner, not a volume learner.

I reference him once every few weeks in preaching probably, but I haven't read one of his books in quite a while. I've got too many new books to read that I would never get around to if I kept reading the old ones. I use them occasionally for reference on a certain topic, but I don't generally reread them. In the last couple of years I've used his book on the Holy Spirit, on the Church, and Enemies of Soul Winning that way.

In the past 3 years I have not read a complete Jack Hyles book through but I have referenced "From Vapors to Floods," & "Let's hear Jack Hyles." I have referred to "The Hyles Church Manual" & "The Hyles Sunday School Manual," and read parts of "Teaching on preaching."

Sorry, Tom.  I just don't understand why you would reference JH so frequently.  Look, I grew up there.  He was the only pastor I ever knew until I left for the ministry.  He cared deeply about me.  I corrected him, and he corrected me.  He actually listened to my correction and changed some of his patterns.  I actually listened to his correction and changed some of my patterns.  JH and I were friends and more like family than friends.  Still, today, I don't mention where I went to Bible college.  I will sometimes reference my childhood pastor or a friend, but not by name.  My purpose is Christ and Him crucified.  My goal is to give God glory.  My aim is to introduce people to Christ.  My philosophy must be supported by Scripture alone.  FWIW, I don't promote Moody, Spurgeon, Goforth or Hyde.  I don't promote Wiersbe, Adams, Mohler, Tripp, Mahaney, Platt or Moore.  Even if I read an author, my purpose is not to promote the author, but Christ.

Why not get a real book on the topic of grammar or public speaking?
