David Baker arrested

In all seriousness, I actually like listening to Pastor Tony Hutson. I’ve heard him say some stuff that probably could be couched a little differently, but he seems to be a guy who stands unapologetically for the Bible. Am I incorrect? Is he theologically off base? I have to say, I got a laugh out of this scene from Pastor Tony’s church. It reminds me of when I was a kid visiting my grandparents’ church up near the mountains of North Carolina. 😆

There was a guy whose name I think had TonyHutson in it. He really mocked Hutson for being fat, BIG TIME.

There was a sockpuppet who was pretending to be a fan of Hutson, Alvin Martinez, maybe one or two others. I thought he was stretching the joke too far, and felt his "satirical" jabs at legit evangelical preachers like Piper and MacArthur were getting more defamatory than funny. So I merged all his accounts. Pretty sure he lost interest after that.

I've heard a few of Hutson's sermons (jn person and via the internet). I can't say that I ever heard much from the Bible, so I don't have much evidence to answer your question.

Maybe the inducement is just his comical, stereotypical Southern persona…I don’t know, I just find the guy kind of like a Donald Trump with a Bible and a handkerchief.

No difference between them and Pentecostals that I can see.

They don’t speak in tongues and do “holy healing” in their services, otherwise there are some similarities in the atmosphere.
There are no real tongues or healing in the Pentecostal churches either.

It's all about the decorum. I'd be interested in the context of the antics. Everyone seems to be having a good time. I have no doubt they would claim the Spirit sanctioned them, if not directly led them.

No difference. It's about getting a 'charge' out of the service.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that a liturgical, or 'high church' manner of corporate worship is more in line with the demeanor prescribed by the Apostles, and a more true operation of the Spirit.

We just referred to churches like that (such as my grandparents’ church) as “country churches.” We knew a “country church” was always going to include some shouting, deep twangy southern gospel, and if things get a little carried away, one or two guys running up and down the church aisle with a Bible overhead. I only recall seeing the “congregational train” going a time or two.

On the other hand, the Baptist church I grew up in was in the city, so although there were some aspects of that service present, the services were much calmer with a higher degree of decorum expected.

As a kid, do you want to guess which church I enjoyed infinitely more? 😬

2 quick counterpoints, taken conceptually in part from these sermon excerpts.

1) Preaching shouldn't be about "entertainment", it's dishonoring to the office and sacred desk.
2) Taking stuff out of context, preaching hobby horse doctrines, and beating the sheep isn't the tools of a humble undershepherd. In the very verse he quotes about anger being something the Bible promotes he neglects the very verses that follows the one he quotes from Ephesians 4...

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

I kind of like the videos of Tony Hutson. Who’s that guy on here who used to post all of his videos? He was pretty funny.
We visited his church several times back in the 90s. We worked with some people who went there and asked us to come visit. We got tired of the whine, fake crying and pleading, and the browbeating of folks, along with his outright lies. I'll never step foot back into his church or any church associated with the SOTL.

What is the SOTL?
Sword of the Lord. Started in the 30's I think by John R. Rice. It was the Independent Fundamental Baptist paper. Took over by Curtis Hutson. Its pretty irrelevant now.

From the website:
Since 1934, the ministry of the Sword of the Lord has served alongside those who are fundamentally and biblically like-minded to promote revival and soul winning within our local churches.

Our greatest desire is to see souls come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. Believing the Bible to be the authoritative Word of God, both inspired and preserved in the King James Bible, we promote and preach it unapologetically. We are excited about the Lord Jesus Christ and we proclaim His salvation to everyone, everywhere!

What started with a small newspaper edited by our founder, Dr. John R. Rice, has grown into a publishing house of the world's finest Christian literature. In addition to the Sword of the Lord newspaper, which is published twenty-four times a year, we offer numerous biblically-sound books, pamphlets and tracts. We also offer a large selection of quality King James Bibles, a church bulletin service, a full line of church supplies, bus ministry materials and much more.

Our Sword of the Lord conferences feature a revival atmosphere that equips, encourages and excites the servants of God to work for the Lord with renewed fervency and faithfulness. Each year, thousands of people are led to Christ with the help of our Soul Winners' Club program. Thousands of pieces of gospel literature and copies of our Sword of the Lord newspaper are made available to chaplains working within the prison systems. Missionaries are also sent literature so that the Gospel can be spread to all the ends of the earth. Each day, we hear of souls saved and Christians discipled because of the ministry of the Sword of the Lord.

To God be the glory! All of this is possible because of the faithful giving of God's people and the generous support from local churches.

I agree, neither are intellects.

My wife and I lived a block away from the SOTL, and it was waning then. That was from 1995-97. They used to have their papers in the IHOP, but hardly anyone was picking them up. Besides the Muslims and several Asian religions were complaining about them being in certain restaurants. I was thankful when they removed them.

I think my dad used to receive this SOTL in the mail back when I was a kid. Maybe it was something else, but it rings a bell.

Tony Hutson doesn't preach if you watch its all about show and how he can can get a response from the people watching. Curtis Hutson was a preacher there is NO comparison
