I'm doubtful this thread will "take off" since it's not about gossip or personalities, but how about we post some items we've found helpful from good 'ol Church Ed?

I'll go first....and remember...it's all about the numbers.

The baptismal saying was beaten into my head so well it is impossible for me to forget it...which does come in handy.

Without a doubt, the single biggest help I got in Ch Ed, and the one that has benefited my ministry the most was the teaching on finances. No, I don't use a purchase order system, but I do use a budget, and it does rule our church. We don't ever spend what we don't have in there to spend. Largely b/c of that, in 16 years of pastoring, we've never gone into debt, or run in the red. In fact, we've never paid a bill late. The mechanics of it are different today than when we were taught, but the underlying structure is exactly the same.

I learned that no matter how many times they would holler about having character when guys would fall asleep, that it is difficult to stay awake in there when you are sleeping 3 or 4 hours. Character had little to do with it. ;)

At the end of the service, never stand there looking around for someone to pick to pray.  This will make visiting men uncomfortable.  Always plan in advance.

I had that today.  I asked two men to pray during our SS class for the tragedy in Indiana.  Both men said "no, thanks".  I was surprised as these men are faithful members.  It would have been an embarrassment for either one if I had not asked in advance.

If an ensemble of young people were to sing for services, an appropriate name for them might be "the Teen Choraliers".  Still bitter I missed this answer on my first Church Ed test.  :o

...and to think that is has only been downhill from there.

Hey, I'm going to be in your neck of the woods soon. Check your email.

I would have to agree with Tom, the lessons on church finances & budgeting were most helpful.

I think the lessons on effective song selection for services were very helpful as well.

Four songs per service, each one gets progressively slower to tone it down for the preaching.

I purchased a Soul Stirring hymbook and for a year I wrote the # next to the song sung, whether it was a # 1,2,3 or 4.

Get people to respond..... Stand to sing, stand to get a visitor's card, stand for responsive reading, stand for the invitation. By doing this they will walk the aisle and get saved?????????????????????  Oh well, back to fighting fire!
...stand to get a visitor's card...
Terrible idea.

Once my in-laws visited the church.  Hyles asked all the visitors to stand.  My in-laws didn't.  For some reason (and I never saw him do this again) he asked everyone to stand, then said "if you are a member please be seated".  My in-laws were left standing.  I was amazed.
