Being as God knew that there was going to be this super cool language called english, why would He want english speaking people to delve into the greek? I know a lot of people say that it sheds light on various matters, but we do have a complete bible. Why would we need to depart from our native tongue to understand something God has preserved for us in our own language?
One needs the Greek if they don't believe that God can preserve His inspired Word for this generation. I believe He can and Did. so I'll stick with English.

God preserved His word in English, but he also preserved it in the languages in which it was originally written.  Why did God give us the Greek and Hebrew if we're not supposed to use them?

Why do I need  to use them, if His inspired Word is preserved in English and I understand English? if you don't understand English then by all means use the Greek and Hebrew which God indeed did give.

disagree. it may not always be best.

In what circumstances might it not be the best to study what the apostles actually wrote, instead of what someone says the apostles actually wrote?

When you find the originals that they actually wrote let us know please!

The kjvo denies the preservation of scripture...

When KJV-onlyists question the words of Scripture because the originals are non-extant, they go straight to pure skepticism, denying the possibility of knowing truth. Instead, they've substituted a non-rational leap of faith - what Francis Schaeffer called an "upper-story leap," that says that the content of their faith has nothing to do with reality.

Because textual critics have to try and show their superiority, especially over anyone who still loves the KJV, and need to justify their existence.  Also, people need to find something wrong with your bible so they can sell you the right one.  I am glad that God didn't call me to be a textual critic for a living.  Seems to me that the spiritual aspect gets lost in all this gnosticism.  I especially love the statement they make, "We understand the greek much better than they did in the past." Right. Before all the know-it-alls jump all over me, I understand the importance of understanding the original languages, just not all the attacks on other versions.  The KJVO don't have a corner on that market.  While the KJV is almost worshipped by a small group of people, it is also attacked by quite a few.  It's one thing to discuss the differences in translations and which one is better.  It is quite a different one to ridicule a translation and make people feel bad because they use it, even exclusively. It always cuts both ways, but some refuse to see that.  They want to tell you how stupid you are for defending the KJV.

Now I see why you chose your moniker--jimMUDcatgrant

You sling enough of it and it only makes you look silly... Are you taking notes from Lisa Ruby or Steve Avery? Should I start a thread called "The Best of JimMUD?!" You have given us enough fodder in the last post.

Compare your words:

JimMUDcatgrant rises up and posts, "I am glad that God didn't call me to be a textual critic for a living."

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Those of us who have had the privilege to sit under and befriend those who are involved in biblical scholarly pursuits have a totally different view. I am humbled by their humility and dedication to make a mere pittance of what they could make in other fields of pursuit. They are truly, godly, dedicated men. YET, you have the audacity to sling mud at those who provide the world with God's word.

It's unfortunate that the mud slinging happens from both ends though. There really is a lot of bitterness coming from both sides, tragically. It seems a lot of well meaning people from both sides of the debate find themselves getting caught in the slinging of mud.

So you are comparing your friends to adulterers, unjust, extortioners?  Sweet.  I mean, because I didn't do that.  Your words, on this forum, and on the other have been less than gracious to those to whom you think you are superior.  If the shoe fits, wear it, pal.

I didn't realize that you were speaking positively of the textual critics.
The Pharisaical attitude demonstrates itself by contrasting one's spirituality to those he views negatively.

Perhaps I will begin a "Best of jimmudcatgrant" You are beginning to fill up a thread quite nicely...
