I am not sure that this is the "norm" but it is certainally very common. JustABigKid was raised in a church that the "pastor" made this dude liook like a whimp and a light weight. So I understand his thinking how normal it is. I personally have been to many IFBX churches over the years and they all had abusive pastors that acted in the pulpit simular to this idiot. They all wanted to show that they are large and in charge. That is what the IFB colleges breed in my opinion.
If you are in an IFB church and do not have a pastor like that, be thankful.
If you're in any type church and have a pastor like that...get out!
How dumb are you to be there in the first place?
Many are there because of their parents. They have no choice and grow up in it.
Are they dumb?
Many are there because they got saved in the church and know of nothing different and the staff play on it.
Are they dumb?
Many are there because they are very sincere Christians who join and get deeply involved in the church before they start to see the issues. Their loyalty is taken advantage of and they stay due to the minipulation. Easy to happen.
Are they dumb?
No.*
Yes.*
Yes.*
My use of he word dumb perhaps confused you....anyone who stays in that environment - who has the power to leave - bears some responsibility and they 'lack discernment' (which defines dumb in my post)!
* not every individual can be broad brushed.
Well definitions are relative and you defined yours so, ok.
It is not an easy thing just to walk away once you are intrenched into the xer dogma. Fact is that is not even an option considered for those inside the walls of IFBxism. To much fear to leave once you start to think that there is a problem. It takes a period of time to overcome that fear and finally move away. Many never do overcome it. Many do not even realize it is fear holding them there but it is none the less.
I have talked to many who left those churches and even years later they get sick to their stomach just to hear the voice of the pastor of the church they left. The thought of the place brings on anxiety for them.
