Abusive Pastors in the Pulpit

Is that normal in IFB land? Seriously, I have never heard anything like that come out of a pastor's mouth before.

Unfortunately it is quite normal...

I don't believe it. I think this man is "not the norm". But that's just me

Obviously you have never lived in IFB Land. This is quite normal. I saw time and again where people were humiliated in front of the entire crowd for the simplest things. One time a young man that had gotten in trouble that week in school was stood up in front of the entire crowd and told to not move and look straight ahead. He had to stand there the entire service for no reason than he had gotten in trouble at school that week. There was never a need or reason to do such things but it happened and still happens.

You're right. Though I'm a fundy, I've never been nor will I most likely ever be a Baptist so my experience is somewhat limited. I'm not saying these dudes don't exist but I still would say, even with my limited experience, that this not the norm. I think I know enough of you all to make that assumption  :). But again, that's just me.

Consider yourself blessed to have never been in such a situation. I am happy that we no longer are.

Me too!
But I only spent 60 years in the IFB movement....

Anyone who claims that that clip is normal behavior in an IFB church (even one considered an Xer church) is being disingenuous.  I -- a self proclaimed Xer -- would have walked my family out of that service.

No, it is not.  If you were unfortunate enough to attend such a church, that is tragic.  But that is NOT the norm.

Now I am really torn....

....do I DOEG myself?

I am not sure that this is the "norm" but it is certainally very common.  JustABigKid was raised in a church that the "pastor" made this dude liook like a whimp and a light weight.  So I understand his thinking how normal it is.  I personally have been to many IFBX churches over the years and they all had abusive pastors that acted in the pulpit simular to this idiot.  They all wanted to show that they are large and in charge.  That is what the IFB colleges breed in my opinion.

If you are in an IFB church and do not have a pastor like that, be thankful.

If you're in any type church and have a pastor like that...get out!
How dumb are you to be there in the first place?

Many are there because of their parents.  They have no choice and grow up in it.
Are they dumb?

Many are there because they got saved in the church and know of nothing different and the staff play on it.
Are they dumb?

Many are there because they are very sincere Christians who join and get deeply involved in the church before they start to see the issues.  Their loyalty is taken advantage of and they stay due to the minipulation.  Easy to happen.
Are they dumb?

My use of he word dumb perhaps confused you....anyone who stays in that environment - who has the power to leave - bears some responsibility and they 'lack discernment' (which defines dumb in my post)!

* not every individual can be broad brushed.

Well definitions are relative and you defined yours so, ok.

It is not an easy thing just to walk away once you are intrenched into the xer dogma.  Fact is that is not even an option considered for those inside the walls of IFBxism.  To much fear to leave once you start to think that there is a problem. It takes a period of time to overcome that fear and finally move away.  Many never do overcome it.  Many do not even realize it is fear holding them there but it is none the less.
I have talked to many who left those churches and even years later they get sick to their stomach just to hear the voice of the pastor of the church they left.  The thought of the place brings on anxiety for them.

My family is still in this church. I can tell you that everytime I go to visit them I go to church with them out of respect for my mom and dad. It is such an uneasy feeling the entire time I am there. I listen to the preaching in a different light and hear some of the things that are said and amened and I am just sickened by it. It breaks my heart that my parents don't see it for what it is.

It is sad that your parent stay in such a sick environment. Even  if it made them angry, I would still keep giving them examples of why the behavior at the church is not remotely Christ-like.

In some cases one spouse might have wanted out while their spouse has not seen the light yet. I could understand not wanting to split the family, and being there to protect the kids from the sick church environment. These types of pastors will divide a family by demonizing the spouse that has changed churches. I have seen it happen with less aggressive IFBxer types too.

don't these churchgoers have any balls to wack that [expletive removed] in the face. they just sit there and take it. Really gets to me

It is very sad that you would let these things get to you.

I hope you find courage to overcome such small things.

Thanks.  I feel better....I think.    :)

I don't know the pastor in that clip.  I am hoping that he was just having a REALLY bad day.  I understand that the taxation of the ministry becomes overwhelming at times.  I have watched good men cross lines in times of extreme stress.  Even if that is the case, he owes those people a public apology.

On the other hand, if that is - in his mind - normal, acceptable behavior -- then that congregation needs to take him up on his offer, and see to it that he has an opportunity to head down the road!

Yes I am sorry for coming across that way.
I am stuck in a similar situation to that you tube clip, and yes its starting to get to me.
