One example of the last time I heard Bob Gray, probably 2006. He reads a text, does not represent the essence of that text in his preaching (bad exegesis. I'd even say misrepresenting the Bible), but uses it to promote. literally, "every person here to committ to winning one soul and bringing them to church this weekend," And then the long drawn out invitation. It was all emotional manipulation. If there was any spiritual vitality, it was hidden.

OK, thanks... but this is an example of terrible preaching. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is no spiritual life in Bob Gray or in that church, does it? (There may have been no spiritual value in the preaching, but the word life caught at my mind).

In the '70s, some Christians called themselves "Jesus Freaks". There was even a Bible cover with psychedelic colors. I think it was called "The Way" or something like that. I should know because I carried it to my public high school a couple of times. I also attended a Friday night church service that had several young people of every denomination, long haired hippie people, and girls in pants - you know all those outward signs of apostasy...lol. The charismatic movement was alive and well in the 1970s. It wasn't all bad. It was great to hear about Jesus' love for us and to hear songs like, "Come to the Water". It brings back good memories.

This is eerily similar to me, but it wasn't a Fri night church service; it was a bible study at the home of family that wanted to help teens. I was saved, but unchurched... I didn't know anything about living the Christian life. Our group had quite a variety of people; we had saved Catholics (she had a Jerusalem Bible, as I recall), Methodists, and I'm sure several other denominations. There were probably some charismatics as well. He taught us pretty basic stuff about how we should be reading God's word and praying to Him and trying to obey what we learned. I don't remember ever hearing there that women shouldn't wear pants and about men cutting their hair short; it was more about getting us "connected" to the Bible and letting the Holy Spirit mature us.

I am very grateful to the Lord for this group, as I learned much from them, and God used it to get me into church.

You're being really picky and exacting. If you think that Bob Gray is a genuine believer, you have never examined his life. Fruit is the evidence of root. His fruit is how we are to discern if there is any root. I saw no fruit. It was more than his preaching as well. Everything about the guy screams fake. Everything. Look for yourself.

I don't know if Bob Gray is a genuine believer or not; I do know that his life and ministry have been seriously warped by his worship of Jack Hyles and the idea that "the pastor is king".

I was merely asking for your evidence of no fruit (indicating he was either not abiding in Christ or that there was a problem with the roots). I don't trust him at all and have no desire to hear him in person ever again. But I don't know enough of his life to know if there was fruit or not.

Because I was saved in a church very near to where he came from (Glaesburg, MI), I followed him closely. I heard many tims in those earyl days that he was this great man of God. So I went and listened many times, and then I followed him and he just got worse and worse. Then, after reading James Spurgeon's "Tales from the Temple," I was convinced. I apologize if I sound contentious. That man ruined a lot of people in a lot of places. And I am moving to a small town not far from Longview and I will warn people to stay away from that church. There may be some people in that movement who are genuine believers, but there are a lot who are just like the Pharisees, and leaders of the Jews in John,, who Jesus spoke to in this way in John 5, "But I know that you do not have the love of God within you. I have come in my Father's name, and you do not receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him. How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? " That "receiving glory from one another" is evidence of unbelief. All they do is look for approval, applause, or glory from one another.
