Why is it that Christians, who are so committed to truth, bite on Conspiracy theories so easily?

the global seed storage vault is actually not in antarctica..... ...it;s in svalbard on the island of spitzbergen... in the arctic..... close to norway at the north and opposite end of the planet from antarctica... ... in fact it;s under the governance and protection of norway.... and also under tight security.... . but apparently anybody can access it to either store seeds there or recover them.....

here;s a link to the seeds vault official page....

it would take more than the average army or navy to break through and steal something from that vault... ... not that it couldn;t be done... . but if social order broke down world wide....and things got that bad ...who is going to have time to plant those seeds and watch them grow anyway?.....
I'm not sure it would. Assuming total breakdown and chaos which would be the only circumstance under which you would need the seeds. Many if not all armies would likely be broken down to many competing militias. All that to say if you actually had a situation where you needed them there probably wouldn't be a functional nation of Norway (especially with Russia in the neighborhood). On top of that the company safeguarding them for you probably wouldn't be a functioning company any longer. With all that being the case and the value that those seeds would have under such a scenario the average guy who purchased them will not likely ever see them.

well..... that;s has always been one of the arguments..... that everything in that vault and also in other secured "doomsday" storage vaults needs to be duplicated and backed up... stored in secret places the whole world does not know about...... ..like antarctica if it was possible to secure a place there...... and if antarctica itself was stable enough to have a maintainable storage facility survive there.... .they have to avoid a situtation where they literally spend billions on something only to see forces of nature take the whole thing apart..... .. . like the motto of the sub tender in your avatar says - results not excuses......

i don;t know where such a place would be.... but i do know it would not be here in hawaii.... .. we are subject to too many volcanos... earthquakes and tsunamis.. ... not to mention the occasional hurricane.... .. maybe a deep submergence facility at the bottom of the ocean would work... ... but that would cost mega billions... .. or even trillions....

We used to reverse the motto to "excuses not results".

I've always wondered about the companies that sell the seeds that are stored for you in a vault in Antarctica. Do they really think when doomsday come and all social order falls apart these seeds aren't going to be stolen by whoever can get to and access said vault in Antarctica first.
I thought it was in northern Norway.

To answer the OP, I got caught up in the Satanic Panic of the early 80s mostly because I was a new believer and I trusted anyone who was in authority in the church. Given I was being discipled in IFB churches, the conspiracy fit right in with the whole anti-rock movement.

Some of the responses here are evidence of the OP.
Conspiracy theories aren't unique to conservatives or Christians.
You're absolutely right. But I have encountered it over and over in my conservative (formerly fundamentalist) circles. Even in my Advanced Biblical Languages class this morning, a young guy was espousing what he was calling "Beliefs" that he and many in his church held, that "people in those kinds of churches" don't hold to, as though they were biblically defensible, and they were just right wacko consiracy theories.

my dad told me about a really horrific murder that happened in texas in the middle of the satanic panic.. ... hunters found what looked like the body of a teenage boy tied to a tree with wire - and mutllated in a gruesome way... .. they immediately assumed it must have been the result of some satanic ritual.. ..... when police arrived and began doing their investigation they discovered it was actually the body of an undercover police officer who had been assigned to enroll in a local highschool due his youthful looks, and investigate a gang of drug dealers operating in the school.... chilling to say the least.... ...

but what they discovered next in their investigation was even more chilling... it turned out the murder had been ordered by the kingpin of that highschool drug gang.... and that kingpin was none other than the son of the chief of police.... . he had learned of the presence of an undercover police officer in his school from his father - who had no idea his son was even involved in such things.... much less the boss of a drug ring capable of such a heinous murder......

Maybe there’s a different story that is eerily similar to this account, but when I read your story it brought back memories of a true crime episode I had watched years ago, except there wasn’t any gore or tying up involved. The version I watched is retold here. Very sad nonetheless.

We lived in Rockford, Illiniois at the time. Large churches had seminars led by evangelists who were spooking the saints with the end of the world scenarios.

Grant Jeffery "Millenium Meltdown" a dispensationalist
Gary North "predicted" a meltdown and was nicknamed "scary Gary"
The Left Behind series sold alot of books. Not because they predicted Y2K, they are fictional eschatology books

North and Jeffery had websites where you could buy 25 year food, seeds and survival tools.

By February 2000, those website scrubbed all information about Y2K and just became survival tool websites

The charismatics in our city were especially spooked
You said you lived in Rockford, Illinois...Did you ever know a Pastor Albert Lynn who had a church in Rockford? I don't know if he and his wife, Elsie, had retired and moved back to Pekin by that time. He went to college with me at Fellowship in E. Peoria back in the early 1980s. Sort of "off topic" but thought I'd ask while I remembered it.

i showed him the news story you linked to.... . he said he thinks the los angeles times may have gotten the facts from a number of different cases that occured in the north texas area over a period of 12 years mixed up .... and combined them together into one story.... the case he told me about happened in the very early 1980s.... even before reagan made his war on drugs announcement and when my dad was still working for the u.s. treasury department... (he left there in 1982)

he told me about this specific case because it was suspected to have a satanic origin... (i had already asked him about the "satanic panic" phenomenon).... . and the fact the officer in this account had been tied up and mutilated was the whole reason satanism was suspected first by the hunters who found the body... then investigated further by police until the truth was discovered...... he said he heard about other similar cases around that time period... undercover officers having their cover blown etc - getting into trouble..... including the one that happened much later in midlothian .... but as far as he knew this was the only one where satanism had been suspected or talked about..... and the midlothian case was the only other one where a police officer was murdered....

heres what he told me concerning the rest of this particular story.... ...

texas started putting under cover police officers in texas high schools in the mid 1970s to investigate drug dealers - after a high school student heavy into marijuna use, was lured into a wooded area and killed by 2 other students in 1974.... that student was also suspected of being a narc - which at the time in the highschool speak of the day, simply meant he was a student who informed on other students regarding drug use and drug deals....

as it turned out the student they shot and killed was not a "narc".. just a pothead who enjoyed marijuana but avoided other heavier drugs.... ... ..but within a year or so of that incident a large number of north texas highschools had undercover officers in them posing as students.. real narcs.. .. however that fact was not commonly known to the public until the officer in the story i wrote about was found murdered a few years later....

at the high school this particular officer was embedded into cigarette smoking was actually allowed.... the school had a smoking area for students and the officer used that in order to get close to the gang - he first appeared to them as a bad boy type just like them who smoked and was also willing to try other things like drugs... ...even other petty crimes if the opportunity arose..... .......

the student/kingpin that later ordered and took part in his murder learned he was a police officer during an argument he had with his own father - who was the towns chief of police.... the argument was apparently over things that had happened at school and the father told him to watch himself - as there might be police officers there in the school observing what he did.... the father suspected the son had dabbled in drugs... but believed it only went as far as marijuana use..... he had no idea just how deep into that and other drugs his son was into or that he was also a dealer who had organized the other students......

one weekend night the gang lured this officer away from a party and tied him to a tree with wire one of the gang students had in his truck... that student also had a shotgun they used to threaten the officer into compliance with... they told him they knew he was a cop... then one of the members of the group began cutting the officer on different parts of his body in an attempt to make him talk and give up the names of other police officers posing as students in the school.... .. but as it turned out he didn;t know any names because there were no other officers there... .eventually he became unconscious from blood loss... and at that point the gang leader took the shotgun from the student holding it and killed the officer with a close range blast to the chest..... ..this information plus other details of the incident were given to police by one of the gang members himself who other than simply being at the scene had avoided taking direct part in the crime ... and later gave testimony against the others for a lighter prison sentence... my dad said he thinks it was 2 days after the murder before hunters found the officers body....

for a brief time after this all undercover officers were pulled from the schools... . but gradually some of them were put back in at specific schools where there was a known problem.... .... but anyway ..... that;s about it.... he did say that in the 1970s and well into the 80s news and information did not travel as quickly or as accurately as it does today... ..and that texas was practically a foreign country to places like california and the east coast back then - (even to people in oklahoma).... he was surprised to see that a news story from texas made it into a los angeles news paper in 1987.... .. not that surprised that the story was missing some points or had mixed up the facts....
