I heard a message not too long ago and the preacher spent 5 minutes talking about how is clean shaven and so should all the men in the church. He went on and on.

Can someone who believes this is biblical please show me where in the Bible you find this?

Nothing is wrong with facial hair.
In fact, there was a girl who worked at the security desk at college who could grow a mustache, but mustaches were verboten for us men!

It is not found in the Scriptures.

Some churches make it a rule to not have it and I suspect it is a leftover from an association with the "hippy generation" of the 60's.  I remember reading Hugh Pyles pamphlet "Skimpy skirts and Hippy hair" years ago as he related it to the hippy generation and that Christian should flee those items.

It was an easy rule to make in Bible colleges and the IFBxer schools did.  Of course since the rule was in the college the preachers made it a rule in the church too.

The Bible doesn't require nor forbid growth of facial  hair. There is a law in the Old Testament that a man was not to mar the corners of his beard - but that doesn't apply to us.

Facial hair was common and accepted until the advent of gas weapons. The need for a good seal on a gas mask led the military to require clean shaven faces. Look at old war photos from the civil war to see what was common and acceptable.

Fast forward to the militant mind set of some in the fundamental movement. Many had military experience and the military was looked upon as the apex of discipline and order. Militant pastor likes military rules. Military rules adopted and given spiritual emphasis for those that would want to be in "the" army.

FWIW I get a chuckle out of the current "need" for pastors to have a goatee. C'mon guys, most of you look ridiculous.  ;D

Really?  It was a photoshopped bunny!  ;)

Phew!!! I was afraid those things were real!

I did too. They always seemed to be hanging around gas station restrooms when they lost their winter coat.  :o

I once saw a tract published on the 70s entitled "Did Jesus Have A Beard."  Its basic point was that Jesus did not have a beard and only had something to pluck out because the events of his trial kept him from shaving.
Kind of makes you wonder how many other IFB holy cows stem from reactionary nonsense.

That was a line we always had thrown at us in our years in xerdom.  I believe I still have a copy that tact or what ever it was that you mentioned somewhere in a box in the garage along with many other such materials from those years.

Of course, before the Lord opened my eyes to the stupidity of it all, I believed it were true.

He must of had some fast growing facial if in a matter of a few hours he went from clean shaven to be able to have enough of a beard for a man to grab a hold of it and rip it out.

If I may digress, is five measly minutes  going on and on?

5 minutes on the subject of facial hair is a full-bore filibuster. Any more than 20 seconds is a waste of time.

I wonder if ear hair counts?

I'm no historian, but wasn't it difficult for people, pre-industrialization, to get there hands on razors?  I have an electric razor and shaving is a chore, can't imagine before safety razors.

Facial hair is just creepy when it is coming at you from an aunt or grandma or the like at a family reunion.

According to Old Testament law a Jewish man was not allowed to shave their beard. It was the nations like Egypt that did that. And in later times all the Caesars shaved their beards (or didn't have beards) - the plucking of Jesus' beard may have actually been part of their mocking of Jesus as a king like Caesar because Caesar was clean shaven.
