....<regarding sinful associations and questionable practices of Christians>...Things that are sinful.  Ya know I think the same thing about music a lot.  Is there anything more demonic?  Is there anything more ungodly?  Is there anything more raw?  Is there anything more lustful?  Is there anything more drunken than a rock concert?  It's a horrible thing.  It's a HORRIBLE thing.  And they want to reproduce it in the church.  I don't know how true believers that came out of that background could experience all the same stuff and not have their conscience racked, because it is that that they have been delivered from.  I'm not talking about the style of music.  I'm talking about the whole created experience.

This is from a concert my wife and I just went to Monday night in Atlanta:

Fleetwood Mac - Stand Back (Atlanta 2013)

Had a good time with the rest of the 50-70 year old crowd.  Checked my conscience after the concert and it wasn't racked.

Clearly a lot of debauchery going on there.

Is it wrong for a Christian to be entertained?

Rock Concerts can be very uplifting and therapeutic .... a release of stress. Did not David play for King Saul as therapy?

I have seen some preachers run, stop, yell, shake, and honestly entertain a crowd, exciting their flesh and emotions - is this not the same thing we find at a rock concert?

I had a young Xer Christian make that very same argument to me about Tony Hutson once, and I told them the same I'll tell you.  The preaching of the gospel is the most somber business in all of the world, and to cheapen it by lowering it to the level of amusement and entertainment is to do the greatest disservice to Christ that a minister could possibly do.

Yes. Jesus clearly was doing it wrong by telling stories to make His point.  ::)

But could not one amuse or entertain in order to present the gospel?

The fact that you would equate Christ's parables with amusement and entertainment is very telling about your low view (or defective view) of Holy Writ and its purpose.

Amuse means to distract.  The reformed (and proper view IMHO) of the activity of the gospel is for the hearer to actively engage via the mind, not passively receive and be distracted.  They are an active particpant in the process, not disengaged.

Yes, but when a child sits before a puppet show presenting the gospel is this not amusement with the gospel message added? Or, would you not label it amusement?

Ahh...got it. You're a boring preacher so that's the only "right" way to preach.

No, it doesn't.

a : to entertain or occupy in a light, playful, or pleasant manner <amuse the child with a story>
b : to appeal to the sense of humor of <the joke doesn't amuse me>
