The Opening Year 1972-1973

Dr. Rice was there for an entire week, and during that time a furious student withdrew from the college. He told Dr. Billings that he had thought that HAC was a Godly college, yet they allowed an evil man like John R. Rice to speak. The problem? The student was a Ruckmanite, and Peter Ruckman was a vehement enemy of John R: Rice.

Dr. Billings persuaded him to stay, but the student´s wife deserted him, divorced him, and married Peter Ruckman.

Do you know the name of this woman?  And the year she married Ruckman?

This is good stuff! I haven't laughed like this in a good while! Golden!

That particluar student went on to teach at Hammond Baptist. He and his son lived in my parents' basement for a year or so and later became a history teacher of mine. :)

X'Files, Dr. Rice spoke at HAC the first time, in 1972. I know the student´s name (he was a friend of mine) but I don´t want to post it. The divorce occurred within the next couple of years.

AGAIN:  Do you know the name (first name is fine) of this woman?  And the year she married Ruckman?

I don't care about the name of the student.

Wait a minute! This actually happened? I thought you were making this up. It just goes to show you that truth is often funnier than fiction!

Until he answers my question about the woman it is fiction.

Citadel, the story is true. I don´t know the name of the woman.

Wow! That changes it from funny to bizarre!
And, my wife informed me that the phrase is, "The truth is often 'stranger' than fiction!"

Vince is telling the truth. Their son was a friend of mine and he and his dad lived in my parents' basement for a time.

FYI, it was Ruckman's second wife and she has divorced him also, from what I understand. The student re-married and has been married to the same woman I think 30+ years now.

Folks, I THINK the Curtiss Hutson incident occurred before the Jim Vineyard incident.

Hutson was there for a week, and on the first day he asked from the pulpit: "What do you call a nigger on a ten-speed bicycle? Thief!"

The bus ministry was not a big deal during the first year, but if you enrolled, you were not allowed to quit for one year, or you faced expulsion. Jim Vineyard was describing a small church that he had helped. He explained that they had bought a single used bus in poor condition and fixed it up, but it needed to be painted. They painted it solid blue, and Vineyard explained it looked like something that came out of a nigger church. So they painted a red racing stripe on it. ¨Then it looked like something that came out of two nigger churches."

There was some laughter, and I quietly made my decision that I would never have anything to do with Jim Vineyard.

Enough students resigned from the bus ministry that one week later, Jack Hyles had to come out there and deal with it.

I have a feeling Dr. Hyles had to clean up more than one Vineyard incident.  :)

There is a picture in (I think it was) the first Caber where Vineyard is preaching and he grabs a chair from the platform and throws it from the pulpit into the aisle.

The man was something else for sure...

I still can't believe that he successfully pastored a church.

Imagine if PT Barnum were a pastor...

I thought you went and taught for Vineyard at OBC?  I believe you said you taught "Greek (no joke), English, Isaiah, Ezekiel, Minor Prophets"

unless I miss understood your post over on the OBC forum

Uhm, as a matter of fact...

Note to my friend Just Me: You´re right. I taught for Jim Vineyard and I also served in the Hammond bus ministry as a bus captain for 2 1/2 years. Like a rotting egg, progres was made.

OK.  I have the straight scoop concerning this.  My "source" is the "wife's" brother-in-law.  I just spoke to him.  She and her husband did divorce, but when they lived in Pensacola.  She never lived in Hammond and she was not his wife when he went there.  So Mr. Massi's comment is in partial (huge) error.  The lady did marry Dr. Ruckman.  Not so dramatic when you hear the truth, eh?

Oh, my source says he highly doubts that her ex husband would have been "furious".  I don't like it when someone gets slandered.  Make sure you know what you're talking about before you post.
