The Hypocrisy of Halloween and Fundamentalism

Ok, ostensibly sometimes it’s about more than just a kid and candy….,hence the tension for some Christians who believe they need to not capitulate but rather reclaim the culture. Whether I entirely agree or not I can at least respect another individual’s conscientious convictions and not necessarily think they’re being hypocrites by not COMPLETELY abstaining from any association with the culture. Meat sacrificed to idols and all that.
Appreciate the feedback. Halloween is one example, but plenty of others come to mind. For example, movie theaters were banned, but watching the same movie from home was okay. After a while, the word “hypocritical” (or inconsistent) begins to come to mind—my mind, at least.

A little primer for all you pagans
I would say there is something to the Druid mythology...and all of prechristian mythology for that matter. Not that their concepts of the spiritual realms were true, but that the Devil was much more active and more free to perform "lying wonders": a talking snake in the Garden, Jannes and Jambres turning their staffs into snakes in opposition to Moses, the prophets of Baal accepting Elijah's challenge, the seeming proliferation of authentic necromancers, witches, magicians and sorcerers, etc.

I don't think any ancient mythology was "made up." I think they're the teaching of devils, and I think that idols were set up to real devils posing as gods. Paul seemed to allude to that notion in 1 Corinthians 10:20... But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God.... And Augustine, in The City of God, said:

This, the only true religion, has alone been able to manifest that the gods of the nations are most impure demons, who desire to be thought gods, availing themselves of the names of certain defunct souls, or the appearance of mundane creatures, and with proud impurity rejoicing in things most base and infamous, as though in divine honours, and envying human souls their conversion to the true God.
Something occurred that has dampened this 'enchantment' so to speak, and I think it was Christ's binding of Satan.

Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. - Matthew 12:29
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. - Luke 10:17-20

I think that is the withholding mentioned by Paul:

And now ye know what withholdeth that [the son of perdition] might be revealed in his time. - 2 Thessalonians 2:6
Though bound, the mystery of iniquity doth already work...even now are there many antichrists, so there is some demonic activity, but nothing like there was before, where a whole nation can be deceived into worshipping a false idol. But at the end of the age, Satan will be fully unleashed to deceive the nations as he did before.

...only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, - 2 Thessalonians 2:7-9

And I think I've said before, some good evidence that Satan is bound in this age, is the fact that Halloween is fun. Very few really believe in ghosts and goblins and devils. The Druids did, and not without reason. I'm certain it was a dreadful and fearful time for them.

As an adult, I've found that the idea of kids going door-to-door demanding large amounts of candy, with the implied threat of pranks if you don't give it over, doesn't sit well with me. I wouldn't want my kids to learn that lesson, if I had them.
You wouldn't want to raise your kids to behave as little extortioners once a year? 😜

OK, Facebook guys, I'll bite ... How is a four-year-old dressing as her favourite Walt Disney character "worship of Satan"?
I have a problem with my granddaughter dressing up as a Walt Disney character who is about to come out as a lesbian but this is a battle we will have to deal with when the time comes. Hopefully by that time she will be old enough to tell fairy tales from reality!

Not Disney but you can get the gist...

It boils down to intent for me. A 4 yr old isn’t dressing as something inappropriate due to ill intent. However, a 14 year old is mature enough to dress up with ill intent.

inconsistency in how they deal with halloween is not even in the top ten of hypocritical practices the world takes note of when they think of fundamentalists..... ..my sister told me when she was a child in texas she went to a baptist church harvest festival ... offered as an appropriate alternative to halloween trick or treating.... and one of the church staff members in attendance was dressed as the devil...👿. ...and nobody there saw anything wrong with it.... ... ...but even that kind of thing is only once a year.... the use of clean "christian" cuss words that scripture says comes of the same evil that obscenity and all profane speech does - is practiced by fundamentalists every day.... and they see nothing wrong with that.... 😲

but in answer to other halloween questions - we didn;t even go out on halloween this year.... didn;t dress up at all.... . but in past years when we went into waikiki for the halloween multiple block party i went as a female roman gladiator.... (complete with a plastic gladius sword).... a cave girl... (with a plastic spikey club - not dumb enough to carry a real weapon into waikiki)..... a vampire.... a leprechaun ...a pirate.... a boudica era scottish barbarian... (with plastic battle axe)..... a scottish piper.... (but no bagpipes)... went that year in the same regalia i wear to the scottish festival every year (got lazy).... ..and even an ancient egyptian once (..before the cultural appropriation nonsense became a big thing)..... always a home made costume - never a store bought one.... (except for the plastic weapons and accessories)....

but the only time i dressed as a recognizable character or entity was the past 2 years and once a few years before, when i dressed as the video game character midna from legend of zelda.... (the normal twilight world version - not the imp midna).... .... that one requires the most make up and body paint including florescent glow in the dark paint for highlights.... i was going to do that this year if we had gone... .. but the increase risk of violence in waikiki at night ...(and especially during partys and special events).... made us decide to stay home this year....

i don;t think any of those things i wore and dressed up as could be considered evil or satanic... but who knows what someone like lisa ruby would say - who said even store bought halloween candy was evil because satanists had put curses on it before it was sent out to the stores.... ... ... ...i never did dress in something that prevented people that know me from recognizing who i was.... no masks or complete face coverings..... ...and none of those are particularly scary either except maybe the vampire.... 🧛‍♀️..

Who is this Lisa Ruby I keep seeing the name of on this forum? I must be missing something….
she was a kind of drive by shooter as forum members go..... came in from time to time but only ever posted about one topic.. the evils of halloween - and how it was all related to satanism and witch craft... and how even the candy sold for it was cursed..... i don;t think she was ever on this version of the forum.... .but she was on the version previous to this one. ....who knows... she could be lurking just waiting for the subject of halloween candy to come up so she can jump in and ambush us again..... ...i guess we have done it now......

Nah, instead she got a grown man in his 40s complaining about not getting the opportunity to trick or treat decades ago. 😬
