A little
primer for all you pagans
I would say there is something to the Druid mythology...and all of prechristian mythology for that matter. Not that their concepts of the spiritual realms were true, but that the Devil was much more active and more free to perform "lying wonders": a talking snake in the Garden, Jannes and Jambres turning their staffs into snakes in opposition to Moses, the prophets of Baal accepting Elijah's challenge, the seeming proliferation of authentic necromancers, witches, magicians and sorcerers, etc.
I don't think any ancient mythology was "made up." I think they're the teaching of devils, and I think that idols were set up to real devils posing as gods. Paul seemed to allude to that notion in 1 Corinthians 10:20...
But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God.... And Augustine, in
The City of God, said:
This, the only true religion, has alone been able to manifest that the gods of the nations are most impure demons, who desire to be thought gods, availing themselves of the names of certain defunct souls, or the appearance of mundane creatures, and with proud impurity rejoicing in things most base and infamous, as though in divine honours, and envying human souls their conversion to the true God.
Something occurred that has dampened this 'enchantment' so to speak, and I think it was Christ's binding of Satan.
Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house. - Matthew 12:29
And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven. - Luke 10:17-20
I think that is the withholding mentioned by Paul:
And now ye know what withholdeth that [the son of perdition] might be revealed in his time. - 2 Thessalonians 2:6
Though bound,
the mystery of iniquity doth already work...even now are there many antichrists, so there is some demonic activity, but nothing like there was before, where a whole nation can be deceived into worshipping a false idol. But at the end of the age, Satan will be fully unleashed to deceive the nations as he did before.
...only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, - 2 Thessalonians 2:7-9
And I think I've said before, some good evidence that Satan is bound in this age, is the fact that Halloween is fun. Very few really believe in ghosts and goblins and devils. The Druids did, and not without reason. I'm certain it was a dreadful and fearful time for them.
