We have leadership guidelines in our church and I'm all for schools, families, and other institutions having rules, even paternalistic ones.
But I take issue when those rules, which are often practical and subjective become a substitute for what scripture actually says. (I've been under preachers that could turn any text into a sermon on standards.)
I don't think anybody can read the NT objectively and say standards are an emphasis. In my opinion, they are a reaction to the cultural upheaval of the last few decades.
