So long Andy

One of the great all time shows!

Great actor, he had clean T.V programs for the family.

He also smoked on the show. Once again Hellywood trying to push its standards on good Christian folk. Surprised TGL would approve of it.

It was in the episode where he had delivered a baby because the doctor could not get to the house in time.

You have a good memory. O.K he was a good sinner.

That episode was from 1961 , a few years before the Surgeon General Warnings began. There were of course Christians that didn't approve of smoking back then but then again they weren't protesting what was on TV back then either - it could be that they weren't watching it.

And what about the town drunk on the show that was portrayed as comical? All Andy ever did was give him a night in jail. These days we tell them to get into rehab or something. The reason though that these old shows are "clean" is mainly because there was no sex or swearing on the shows at least up until the late sixties.

Interesting fact about the man that played Otis (Hal Smith) - He was a Baptist and a Christian and was the voice of Mr Whittaker on Adventures in Odyssey - Funny I didn't even know that and I listened to that show back in the early 90s - talk about two totally different characters.

Andy Griffith was raised in the Moravian Church (a Lutheran offshoot that played a heavy influence on Methodist theology).  At one time, he studied for the ministry before turning to acting.  It seems that much like another minister that turned to TV instead of preaching (Mr. Rogers), Andy had a much wider influence for good outside of the church walls.

Contrary to the posts where I tweak the nose of TGL, I too will miss Andy Griffith. I may not have agreed with his political views, but the Andy Griffith show is one that is decent, wholesome, and timeless.

Sorry, I don't have a nose...... :)

I think it was voted the all time favorite on one occasion.  You know, the one where Opie kills a mama bird and then takes care of the 3 baby birds and names them Wynken, Blynken and Nod.  Barney pretends to understand bird talk, and Opie asks Andy how will he know if he did right by the birds.  Andy, "Well, Wynken will tell Blynken, Blyken will tell Nod, and Nod will tell Barney."  Classic.  Proof that humor doesn't have to be vulgar.

Andy doesn't whip his son Opie for killing the bird, but opens the window and makes Opie listen to the baby birds chirping for their mama.  He tells Opie before that: "Sorry isn't the magic word that makes everything all right." Parenting 101.

Loved the show. It was a good humor that many of us raised in small, semi-rural areas of the south could relate to.  As pure visual entertainment goes it probably doesn't get any better than that.

As far as the statement "Andy had a much wider influence for good outside of the church walls" goes I take considerable exception.  No doubt Andy was a good neighbor type, and possibly even a true believer, but I know of nothing that would indicate that he was a champion of the Gospel under the Pauline "woe is me if I preach not the Gospel" model. I would classify his influence as that of eternal worth if I could classify him as a champion of the Gospel.  Other than that he is just another of billions of decent people that have passed on and will shortly become a mere mist of memory.

Everyone is forgetting to mention his amazing roll as Sam Farragut in Pray for the Wildcats....
