Saul spoke to Samuel via the witch at Endor?

An exegetical understanding of 1 Chronicles 10:13 & 14, which in the King James Version reads as follows:
 
I agree it's a valid question, one that could be answered either way. It just so happens that on this one, I take the Scripture more at face value than Alayman does. That is unusual, because I do sometimes use the historical-critical approach. I just don't see that it's indicated to apply it here.
