I really don't care what women wear but sometimes the lack thereof or the tightness thereof has caused eyes to wander.  "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak"

Well then maybe you need to do what the Bible says and stop blaming the womins...just gouge your eye out! 8)

"If thy eye offend thee...."  Yea it does say that.  I will be right back

Great congregational singing followed by an excellent special then to kill it all and take your mind and heart off of God - The Handshaking - then followed by finding the hand sanitizer.

Amen!!

I started a thread on this very topic over on the Baptist Board a couple of weeks ago. It was amazing to see how many other people didn't like that practice either.

Religious Pet Peeves?

My worst is probably when preachers use "The Greek says..." when there is no need for that. Its almost confusing, because the average person forgets.

I don't think there are that many instances where you need to do that.  Maybe if there is some significant theological point supported by the meaning of the word and the English just does not get it.  But overall, making statements about theological truth is usually based on sentences and correlation between sentences, not words.

When a preacher says something really moronic and doesn't get any "AMENs," after which he follows with "Boy, it's awful quiet in here now..."

As if the congregation were keeping quiet because of a guilty conscience rather than their feeling a bit uncomfortable over the stupidity of his comments.

The "every eye closed, every head bowed, because Jesus is embarrassing" kind of "altar call."

People who affect thees and thous when they pray publicly, often with no idea about the proper grammar, and even though there's no warrant for addressing God in that fashion.

Also public prayers that use "Lord" or "God" as filler words while the speaker tries to figure out what to say next.  And people who pray "Lord, we just _______" as if asking God to cure Aunt Mabel's cancer is no big deal.

Ransom, I'm with you on using 'God' and ' Lord' as filler words. If I am having a conversation with someone I don't use their name 50 times during the course of it. Wonder where that habit came from....

I don't care for the worship terms myself. Praise and worship, worship service, worship leader/pastor. I guess I'm old fashioned.

More old-fashioned than scripture?

Just one or two:

Ps. 5:7 "But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple."

Ps. 66:4 "All the earth shall worship thee, and shall sing unto thee; they shall sing to thy name. Selah."

The preacher pulling a wad of cash out of his pocket to put into the offering and having an usher step up to get it while telling the congregation why they should do likewise. Trying to shame everyone into doing the same thing.

See your point. In have no problem with the word itself, just how it is used. Just like any word can become a catch phrase for something, the words praise and worship has taken on some modern connotations for me.  Praise and worship is wonderful, biblically speaking. It's what some people CALL praise and worship that I have the problem with. However, this IS a personal opinion.

being as no translation is perfect, all of them need corrected at one time or another, so appealing to the Greek and Hebrew originals doesn't bother me in the least.

You have a copy of the originals?

Kids who are allowed to act up in the pews. It's sad to see a parent try to assert themselves only to let those around them see  who the real boss is....the kid!
