the ground inside a volcanic caldera.... especially a big one.... is almost always smooth and flat - but also perfectly level... ... just like the surface of a lake or pond.... because that;s basically what it is... ... but instead of being lake that filled with water it was filled woth molten lava - which levelled out as it rose and then hardened as the lava cooled when the eruptions stopped....... .Do volcanic craters like this usually fill in with dirt and grass? I’ve seen pictures and it always seems amazingly level and smooth for a former volcano.
one of our favorite places to hunt in past years was an ancient volcanic crater high up in the mountains.... if you look at it from the air or from atop the crater rim, it actually looks like a lake covered over with green algae.. but it;s not... it;s a solid floor of lava rock that is perfectly flat and level - with grasses and small to midsized shrubs growing on it.... .back in the day it would have been a glowing lake of molten lava.... but as a volcano it has been extinct well over a thousand years.... . as is both punchbowl and diamond head.... ..
