I was just unfriended on Facebook by speaking out on a pastors thread where he is complaining that his church folks don't tell him what they are doing.

I replied that 1)Why should they tell him, and 2)why did he think he needed to know.

I then told him of my experience at FBCH where people would line up to ask Hyles what house to buy, what color car, etc.

This control cr*p is as old as the hills I'm sure but I can find nothing in the NT that instructs any pastor to be a snoop in the lives of people.

If my pastor asks me how I'm doing, that's one thing.  If I ask for his help/advice, that's one thing.  For him to expect me to tell him what I'm doing, then he's gone too far.

I know that no one else has ever experienced this, and that I'm just paranoid because of my meds.

But if I want that kind of control, then I'll become a Mormon where they will ask to see your tax returns.

That was good but.....................as we were taught, "unasked for advice is seldom heeded & often resented."

The rubber really meets the road when you must turn, like a fish toward a spinning lure & tell it to your pastor's face & willingly face the control freak's wrath. I have done so as kindly, discreetly but directly as possible...............rarely it is taken well.

Excellent.  And true.

I've shared my meds with him.

Hopefully...........but that would be a "NEGATIVE" for the pastor I had in mind.

As a Pastor, I seek no control over my people....only influence.

I seek no pay, only liberty to preach.

I don't want to run the church, only provide spiritual leadership.

I am not the authority on home buying, car repairs, or most other practical matters, but I am the resident authority on scriptures.  I should stick to what I am qualified to give speak on!

I know that some will read the OP and be shocked.  I have a friend that attends a church about an hour from me.  People literally go the pastor for the items mentioned.  They think he is a wonderful pastor because he is willing to take time to do advise his people on these topics.

Good story.

Let me be clear.  It is not wrong to ask your pastor anything.  it is wrong for him to expect you to ask him anything.

That is the exactly how Bro. Hyles was able to exercise pastoral control.

I know JH was big on seeking counsel.  I have heard him encourage people to get counsel on several issues but never what color of car, etc.

Maybe BG should have sought pastoral Counsel as to when to leave a church.

I have always sought the counsel of the LORD. Humans are far to biased to be able to give any good advice in the place of God Himself.

That would be the Catholic model that you refer to.

I would only go to another assembly of called out ones upon clear unambiguous leading from the LORD.

There are just too many good reasons for me to stay. One ungodly christian is not enough to make me leave.

In fact there are far more ungodly christians than there are godly christians. Pride is the number one sin of IFBs.

Biggest, fastest growing, greatest, most souls saved, great man of god, etc.

What's all this have to do with controlling pests?

I took this post as Twisted equating controlling pastors with pests. Did I misinterpret his post? I thought he put pestoral on purpose, he is good at inventing new words. All in good humour.

It's one thing to seek advice from another (but is the pastor the ONLY one from whom to get advice?).

It's quite another to not learn to think for yourself, nor go to God for yourself, and just bring EVERY decision to the "great leader".

We are ALL kings and priests before God; we can go to the same God the pastor can go to.  God is no respecter of persons and will show us His will if we truly desire it.

Good observation. I think you're on to something.
