Interesting thing said last night....

I also wonder how much of the distance being put between FBCH and Hyles was because as Schaap would say, the "mantle" was passed on to him during Hyles last moments.  Maybe they think it was his fault that Schaap was in power?  Either way they are mistaken, there was no passing of the mantle, and out of 2945 votes, 2826 voted yes to make Schaap their pastor.

Absolutely!  They made him the pastor, and they let him continue to be the pastor.

I think with JS's pastorate, a comparison could be made to boiling a lobster...

When one boils a lobster (I am told -- not something I've ever cooked), the humane way is said to be to put the lobster in a pot on the stove that starts at room temperature. The lobster is acclimated, not shocked, and doesn't realize he is gradually being brought up to the boiling point of death.

Or so they say -- has anyone every asked the lobster?

I hesitate anymore to say "we" because there are exceptions to every generalization...but my feeling is that SOME of us, maybe indeed MOST of us were like that lobster with regard to JS's pastorate. We were slowly immersed and just did not realize what is now so very much more clear in retrospect.

Makes you unsure of how / what / who to trust as you try to move forward. Pastor Wilkerson seems like a really good guy...but so did JH when he was my pastor, and so did JS when he was my pastor. My perception turned out to be incorrect so how can I be sure my current perception is now correct? I think I see that Pastor Wilkerson is completely different, which bolsters my confidence in the accuracy of my opinion of him. But part of me is just very, very guarded.

RAIDER mentioned how he felt Dr. Hyles cared for and loved him. I never felt that and he was my pastor. He was literally a revered figure head. No personal contact whatsoever with the average church member. You knew you had no chance of ever seeing him personally, speaking with him. You didn't think you had a right to expect that, with him being who he was. But let's just say...I know right now I have a pastor. You can call Pastor Wilkerson. If you need him to, he will come over to your house and talk to you. He is available. Neither JH nor JS were...so I do definitely perceive we now have an actual pastor. It is somewhat less of a thrill. Unfortunately for myself and I suspect for many others, church always felt like so much more of an earth-shattering event when the charisma and personality from the pulpit loomed so incredibly large. Sad to say the excitement of it was a kind of thrill that made you feel as if greatness was being accomplished simply by being there. Now that that fool's paradise has been exposed, it is a little hard to come down to earth. But that's truly where I guess we were before, we just had more grandiose notions.

I appreciate the post.  It seems like you are like many of us.  You have learned much in the past few years.  I think you have to be careful not to lose trust in every preacher.  On the other hand, you have to be careful jumping in with both feet.  It seems like your "guarded" philosophy is the correct approach.

Well, at least you all have the "something to think about" guy on the radio to keep everything on the straight and narrow. ;D

Forgive my ignorance, but this reference escapes me.

A fbch guy started a couple of years ago to write a Bible thought for the day and his thoughts on it. They asked him to do it on the radio. It is generally on about 6 times a day and it is about 30 - 60 seconds at a time. It is generally reading a portion of a verse and then sticking a needle in the eye of all of his listeners. Never heard anyone yet who was impressed.

This morning went something like this: Reprove a wise man and he will love thee. (paraphrased)  He then went on to say how do YOU react when you are reproved by your pastor, SS teacher, (and he actually said this) or the radio spot guy? Went on to say if you were wise you would love it etc. etc. At the end he always says, "Something to think about".

Thanks for clearing that up for me. Is this guy on the station owned by FBC?

Yes, several times a day. Annoying as all get out. It is kind of like having a hac freshman with a 60 second radio spot. You can use your imagination to take it from there. 'If everyone would be just like me revival would be breaking out all over the place.'

Here is an example from Facebook  ;D

Terry Hedderman

A Bible thought: Pro 18:10 "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe."
Cloak yourself in His name: just casually mention His name or the Bible...not in a pious way, but conversationally. Most of the wrong crowd (and their temptations) will shy away.

The giant irony of that mentality and approach is that Schaap often mentioned His name and the Bible,... Yet he was at the same time the wrong crowd. Cliches and pithy phrases do not equal truth.

What was also not stated that staff people have to return all rental cars.  He looked right to Johnny Colsten and said I'll expect your keys on my desk Monday morning.  And Elaine's too.  Now on the piddley salary they make, who's going to let them buy a car?  Or 2 for that fact?  That's disloyal!

I think some were deserving of a car, like Bro Johnny, who'd rack up thousands of miles driving to hospitals, cemeteries, etc, but then there were others like Larry Staab.  I like and respect him, but when he was reassigned from being HBHS principal to HAC to teach Health and Safety, his car should've been taken from him.  I always found it peculiar how FBC decided who was deserving of a leased car---and they were very nice cars too.

Just curious, was this under JS or Pastor Wilkerson?  Also, when did this happen?

Schaap. Ended the leased car program as well as sold the houses around the college (Men's and Women's guest houses along with others). Staff residing in the houses were given good deals to buy and those driving leased cars were provided compensation to offset the loss.

This had to have been about five or so years ago?  Time had been a blur since I  left.
