Dr. Hyles passed away in 2001.  I believe he was 74.  Of course, we all know the story of FBCH since that time.

Here is the thought for this thread - what if Dr. Hyles had not passed away, but rather remained healthy and continued to pastor FBCH for another 10 years or so.  What would those years have looked like?  Would there have been a new auditorium built?  Would Pastor's School have continued on?  With the explosion of social media would Dr. Hyles ministry have survived?  What would be the enrollment at HAC?  Would Dr. Hyles have the loyal following that he had in his past?

I know that none of us know the answers to these questions, but i thought it might be interesting to ponder.  So, Hacker Nation, what do you think?

The program you wish to view has been suspended.

I do not think a new auditorium would have been built.
I think Pastor's School would have still packed the place out.
I believe social media would have caused Dr. Hyles some problems.  I'm not sure how he would have dealt with it.
I believe the attendance at HAC would be more than in has been the last several years.  With that being said, because of the social media I think there would be several pastors that would not send students to HAC.

I think Jack Schaap would still be a teacher at HAC, and Linda Murphy would not be writing a book. And Mrs. Hyles would not be a Southern Baptist!

Schaap's true colors may still have shown themselves, but you are probably correct on all 3.

Yes, I think we might have a new auditorium but not grand as what we have now.  He liked his people close.  JS had to have big and bigger.  Bro. Hyles liked to be out of debt.  JS spent the money faster that he could get it.  He still would have had question and answer  :)  and would have still have had Pastor's School.  He still had a lot of knowledge to give out.  I think his associations would have changed -alot, but don't who.  JS would have left and gone  home or out of the ministry and working for his dad who would have kept him straight.  I think a lot of people who are in charge of departments wouldn't be and some who are not in charge would be (just my opinion).  Youth Conference would still be in place with the 84 year old man still acting like a teenager and the kids loving it.  HAC would be larger than what it is today because of his influence around the world.  Unlike JS and Wilkerson, he didn't travel out of the country and out of his pulpit like they did and do.  He loved his pulpit and his people.

All of the above..........same as usual...........

I have often thought in the last few years, that is why he was so paranoiud about computers. May be wrong, but......

FWIW.... After Bro. Hyles death, I remember EL saying in public, that in the fall of '00 it was getting out among the staff that Bro. Hyles would be stepping down within the next ______ months. (More than 12, less than 24)
again FWIW.

He had been trying to find a replacement for over 10 years.

He tried to groom Jack S. for it, and eventually gave up on him.

He may have had his sights on Owens.

You are correct.  I believe he didn't trust his own SIL.  Maybe he saw the same traits as his own son.  Owens ???  I think he knew he would lose a lot of people if he chose him.  He would have had to go outside the HAC realm.  And yes, I do believe I remember him mentioning he was going to be stepping down to enjoy his retirement, but never gave a timeframe, but shortly after that is when he got sick.  We laughed about it because he would be so bored the first week, he'd want to come back.

I was told by an inner circle top staff member at the time of the death of Brother Hyles that he had abandoned "grooming" Schaap as his successor and had put all his efforts into mentoring Bro. Owens. The man that told me that said he gave up on Schaap because he was too easily distracted, would start projects and abandon them before they had a chance to grow and was horrible with finances. That conversation caused me to vote no for JS and when he asked me if I had voted for him I told him no. From then on, every time he saw me he would throw that in my face.

Write him a letter in the pen saying...I voted NO!

Yes, I freely admit that I'm an Owens man, but that church would be dramatically different if he had gotten that pulpit instead of Schaap. Dramatically...

Tom:  I totally agree.  Not many people liked Owens.  He had a Sweetheart Couples class and that was the only thing he was absorbed in.  Everything else was non-existent.  And we certainly didn't need another DH in his kids.  One of his sons, don't know which one was truly in real trouble with law enforcement here and where he once pastored.  We surely didn't need that - AGAIN!  His wife, well, she was another stuck on herself.  She wouldn't talk to anyone, one of the most unfriendliest persons I knew.  There were a lot of people that he took with him to WV that once they got there realized what he was and left, some of his very loyalists here!  Now that tells you something of a man when his own people that followed him left after a very short time.  Talked to one not long ago and they told me some real stories of him and why they left.

I remember asking  Ulzana, "Why didn't the pulpit committee ask J.O. first, who thinks that JS is ready to be a CEO of anything?"

In retrospect, We got an help that was meet for us....a haughty Jezebel.

Both wife and son were about to flame out.
JO was seriously disqualified.
The wife situation would have come to the fore at FBCH instead of out east.
It just had more time to metastasize out east.

"About to flame out"
That is a strong accusation.
