Hypocrisy on the Left!
Since we all know that statistics don't lie....I won't quibble over the numbers.
But, one never knows if he is in the one half of one percent.
If someone breaks into my house in the middle of the night, I'm going to assume he's in that minority!  ;D
And that's a fair enough statement. I don't necessarily have a problem with self-defense. I don't have a problem at all with defending others (although there may be some exceptions...)

I do have a problem with Christian (or those who identify as such) being kill-happy and having a "well, they got theirs" attitude. As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread (which started this rabbit trail), a lot of the "pro-life" crowd on only "pro-life" as long as the life is still in utero. When it comes to the death penalty, dropping bombs on Iraqis, "stand your ground" (even when retreat is a viable option), and a host of other issues, they are very anti-life.

prophet,
I assure you I am neither phony or coward.  I definitely would not end the existence of a robber, or anyone for that matter. I would have a difficult time doing so since I do not now or ever will own a gun.  I would however protect the life of an innocent.

So, I guess it would be fair to say you are a pacifist.  The 6 million Jews that were annihilated in WW II must have thought the way you do.  And that is your right.  I am pro-life where abortion is concerned.  I am also for the death penalty, using bombs, and standing my ground.  And a host of other issues.  This does not make me anti-life.  It does mean I don't think the way you do.  Yes, I believe what the Bible teaches, but I do not necessarily  believe what others say it teaches.  You included.

Actually closer to a Just War theorist.
I am pro-life where abortion is concerned.
Ergo... only "pro-life" as long as the life is still in utero.
I am also for the death penalty, using bombs, and standing my ground.  And a host of other issues.  This does not make me anti-life.
How are the death penalty (in most cases), empire building warfare, and killing people after your stereo showing a high regard for human life?
It does mean I don't think the way you do.  Yes, I believe what the Bible teaches, but I do not necessarily  believe what others say it teaches.  You included.
That's fine. Just have logical arguments for why you believe as you believe, and be consistent with where that leads you. (There are arguments for both sides of many issues, sometimes good ones.) What Biblical argument can you make for:

- the death penalty
- empire building warfare
- and killing folks to protect your stuff?

Did Jesus say " love your enemies" or " kill your enemies while jacking your stuff"

I'm just spitballin' here, but when Jesus said "love your enemies", I don't think he was referring to home invaders who might kill your family while taking your stuff.  I think it was more of a reference to people who hate you, especially those who hate you because you're a Christian.

I'll go with the "He meant, 'love everyone, everywhere, for all time" crowd.

I'm pretty sure He would have said we should love others, even if they strip us naked, spit on us, pull out our hair, beat us senseless, and then hang us on a cross to die from a combination of exposure and exhaustion that ultimately saps our body's ability to even breathe. Yeah...I think He meant those guys too.

You can love someone without helping them load your stereo into their trunk.  :)

I guess we're substantially in agreement then, although your rhetoric makes it sound otherwise.

I am not "pro-life", or "pro-choice" either, but as thorough a mugwump on the issue as could possibly exist. I am not for the death penalty or unnecessary wars, and I don't want to kill anybody... but I will if I have to, in defense of myself or another. I would not kill a burglar who's taking my stuff, so long as he's leaving with it and is no longer a threat.

I am by no means "kill-happy" though I do think "stand your ground" laws can be reasonable and maybe even wise and just, depending on how they're worded, particularly in jurisdictions where courts have been unfriendly to self-defense, where they may be a necessary corrective measure.

Back to the Bible.  The strong man is armed, and protecting his 'goods'.  Sorry, all you hippies, sissies, whiners, wimps, and fruitcake, Jesus assumed armed homeowners  defend their stuff, and that anyone listening, understood that basic fact of life.

Lets see, you say " back to the Bible" then proceed to call people names? Should this be called Hypocrisy on the Right?  Every body has the right to life, even if they are jacking my Xbox, cigars and bourbon. rsc2a has supplied statistics, can we at least agree that a life is more important than stuff?

The statement before the alleged name-calling, was back to the Bible.  I listed types of people, but didn't aim the 'names' at anyone.
Yes  life is more important than stuff, duh.  What does that have to do with Jesus beginning a parable by saying : here's what you all know: armed homeowners keep their stuff safe?
